GRACE FOR THE GENTILES
THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
CHAPTER 11
Fantastic to have
you back, and welcome! In our last segment, we read about how Peter had
shared the Word of God with the Gentiles. Let’s see what happened next.
The Apostles and
brethren that were in Judæa heard that
the Gentiles had also received the Word of God, and when Peter came back up
to Jerusalem, the Jewish people contended with him, saying, You went in to
Gentiles, and ate with them. (Understand that the Jewish people at that time
were of the belief that God wouldn’t ever give the Gentiles the Grace that
He gave them.) But Peter explained the whole thing to them, saying, I was in
Joppa praying and in a trance, when I saw a vision. A vessel descended, like
a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came next to me.
When I looked closely at it, I saw four footed beasts and wild animals and
creeping things, and birds of the air inside of it. And I heard a voice
saying to me, Arise Peter, kill and eat. But I said, No, Lord, for nothing
common or unclean has ever entered my mouth. But the voice answered me again
from heaven, What God has cleansed, do not call
common.
This happened three times
and then the sheet was taken up to heaven again. Just then, there were three
men already come to the house where I was, sent from Cæsarea
to me. The Spirit told me to go with them, without doubting anything. These
six brethren went with me and we went into the man’s house. He told us that
he had seen an angel in his house, who stood and said to him, Send men to
Joppa and call for Peter, who will tell you, how you and all your family
will be saved.
As I began to
speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, like it did on us at the beginning, and
then I remembered the Word of the Lord, how He said,
John indeed baptized with water, BUT you will be
baptized with the Holy Ghost. Since God gave
them the same gift as He did to us, who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ,
who was I, that I could question God?
When they heard these things,
they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, God has also granted to
the Gentiles, repentance unto life (Grace). Now those who were
scattered about because of the persecution that arose about Stephen who had
been stoned to death traveled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch,
preaching the word to the Jewish people only. And some of them were men of
Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they came to Antioch, spoke to the Grecians,
preaching the Lord Jesus.
The hand of the Lord was
with them: and a great number believed, and turned to the Lord. Then news of
these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem: and they sent
Barnabas, to go as far as Antioch. When he got there and had seen the Grace
of God, he was glad, and urged them all, that with purpose of heart they
would cling to the Lord. Barnabus was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost
and of faith: and many people were added to the Lord.
Then Barnabas went to
Tarsus, to look for Saul, and when he had found him, he brought him to
Antioch. And it came to pass, that for a whole year they joined themselves
with the church, and taught many people. And
the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
At that time, prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch, and one of them named
Agabus stood up, and predicted by the Spirit that there should be great
famine throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius
Cæsar.
Then the disciples, every
man as he was able, wanted to send money to the fellow Christians who lived
in Judæa. They sent it to the elders by
the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
We can see the
growth of Christianity really taking hold now, as the Word is spreading all
over, further and further out, and to all different nations. The roots of
Christianity are taking hold firmly, but as you may have guessed, there are
still some challenging times ahead, as we’ll see, in our next Daily Bread.
