BOOK OF EXODUS

CHAPTER 16

Welcome to all of you who are hungry for your Daily Bread.  And speaking of being hungry for bread, that’s what our story is about today.  We pick up with the children of Israel, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they left Egypt.  They are now in a place called the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Sinai.  By this time, their unleavened bread had run out and they were hungry.

The whole congregation whispered behind Moses and Aaron’s back in the wilderness.  Then they said to Moses and Aaron, we would rather have died by the power of God in Egypt where at least we had as much meat and bread as we needed, but you’ve brought us out into the wilderness to kill us with hunger.

The Lord said to Moses, I’ll rain bread from heaven for you and the people will go out and get a certain amount every day so  I can test them, whether they’ll walk in my law or not.  On the sixth day, there will be twice as much as they gather daily.

Moses and Aaron told the children of Israel, tonight you’ll know that the Lord has brought you out from the land of Egypt and in the morning, then you’ll see the glory of the Lord, that he heard your whispering against Him.  What have we done that you mumble about us?  The Lord will give you flesh to eat in the evening and in the morning, plenty of bread because he hears your murmurings, but your murmurings are not against us, they are against God.

Moses told Aaron to say to God’s people, Come near before the Lord: for He has heard your murmurings.  As Aaron spoke to them, they looked toward the wilderness and the magnificence of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

The Lord told Moses, I’ve heard the muttering of the children of Israel.  Talk to them and tell them, In the evening you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread and you will know that I am the Lord your God.

Why does God put up with it, you may wonder.  Why didn’t He just let them go back to Egypt if that’s what they wanted so badly, or let them just die in the wilderness for their doubt.  Well, if you’re a parent, you understand that no matter how many times your child disobeys you or doubts you or takes advantage of you or hurts your feelings, you still forgive them and love them.  If you’re not a parent, you may be able to understand it from a different viewpoint.  There is probably someone in your life that you have not listened to or doubted or taken advantage of or hurt, and they still forgive you and love you.  Our God understands this so much clearer than any of us can.  His grace goes far beyond anything we can possibly hope to possess.

That evening, quails came up and covered the camp and in the morning when the dew fell away there were round things on the ground as small as frost.  The children of Israel didn’t know what it was and Moses told them, This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.  King David refers to this bread from heaven as “angels’ food” in Psalms 78:25.

This is what the Lord has commanded, Moses told them.  Every man will gather whatever is needed for the people of his tent, one omer for each person.  Don’t keep any until the morning.  An omer is 1/10 of an ephah and an ephah is 1.1 bushels.  There was never too much or too little.

Despite what Moses said, some of them left it until the morning and it bred worms and stank, and Moses was angry with them.

Each morning they gathered it and when the sun became hot, it melted.  On the sixth day there was twice as much and the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.  Moses explained, This is what the Lord said.  Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath to the Lord.  Bake what you need for today and boil what you need to boil and whatever is left over, store it for the morning.  They did what Moses said, and it didn’t stink and there were no worms in it.  Moses said, Eat that today, because today is a Sabbath to the Lord.  Today you won’t find it in the field.  Six days you’ll gather it but on the Sabbath there will be none.  Some people went out on the seventh day to gather, and they didn’t find any.

The Lord said to Moses, How long will you disobey my commandments and my laws?  I have given you two days worth of bread on the sixth day.  Let every man remain in his place on the seventh day, and not go out.  So the people rested on the seventh day.

The house of Israel called the name of this bread, Manna.  It was white like the color of coriander seed, and it tasted like crackers made with honey.  Moses said, This is what the Lord commands.  Fill an omer of it to be kept for your descendants, so they can see the bread that I fed you with in the wilderness when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.

Moses told Aaron, Take a pot and put an omer full of manna in it and save it for the Lord, to be kept for your generations.  So Aaron prepared it and kept it before the Testimony.  The children of Israel ate manna for 40 years, until they came to the borders of the Promised Land.
