SHOW ME YOUR GLORY
BOOK OF EXODUS
CHAPTER 33
We're delighted to have you back with
us again at Daily Bread! In our last story, Moses came down from Mount
Sinai with the Ten Commandments to find the children of Israel had made
themselves a golden calf to worship while Moses was gone. In his anger, he
threw down the precious tablets with God's inscription on them and broke
them to pieces.
The son's of Levi repented early and
by the Lord's command killed about 3,000 people in the camp that day. Moses
returned to God to seek forgiveness for the rest, and the Lord said that
whoever sinned against Him would be blotted out of His book. He plagued the
people and told Moses to continue on to the Promised Land with them and when
He decided, the people would pay for their sin.
The Lord told Moses, Leave here with
the people you've brought up out of Egypt and go to the land that I promised
to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, to your seed I will give it. I'll
send an angel in front of you to drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the
Hittite the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, and bring you to a land
flowing with milk and honey. I won't go up in the midst of you, because you
are a stubborn people, and I might destroy you on the way. Tell the
children of Israel, you are a rebellious people. I will come up into the
midst of you in an instant and destroy you, so take off your ornaments so I
can decide what to do with you.
The people were sorrowful and they
took off their ornaments. Moses took the tabernacle, and set it up far
outside the camp and named it the Tabernacle of the congregation. Anyone
who wanted the Lord went outside the camp to the Tabernacle of the
congregation.
When Moses went out to the tabernacle,
all the people looked from their tent doors and watched Moses until he was
gone inside the tabernacle. As he entered into the door, the cloudy pillar
came down and stood outside and the Lord talked with Moses. All the people
saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door and they stood up and
worshipped, every man at his own tent door.
The Lord talked with Moses face to
face, like a man speaks to his friend.
Moses said to the Lord, You told me to lead
these people and you haven't told me who you will send with me. But you
said, I know you by name and you have found grace in my sight. Now I beg
you, if I have found grace in your sight, lead me so that I may know you
too, and gain your favor, and please consider that this nation is your
people.
God heard Moses' sincerity and He told
Moses, My presence will go with you, and I'll give you peace. Moses said to
Him, If you don't go with me, don't take us from here. How will it be known
that I and your people have your forgiveness? Won't it be if you will go
with us? If you're with us, I and your people will be different from all
the people on the face of the earth. Moses couldn't stand the thought of
God not being with them.
The Lord said to Moses, I'll do this
thing that you've asked because you have found GRACE in my sight and I know
you by name. And Moses said to God, I beg you, show me your glory. And God
said, I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I'll proclaim the
name of the Lord to you, and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious,
and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. You cannot see my face, for
there will be no man that will see me, and live. There's a place by me, and
you'll stand on a rock. While my glory passes by, I'll put you in a hollow
of the rock, and I'll cover you with my hand while I pass by, and I'll take
away my hand, and you'll see my back, but my face will not be seen.
Can you even begin to imagine the
feeling in Moses soul at that moment. If Moses could tell us what the best
moment of his life was, it would probably be that one. We live for that
very reason, to one day see God. Moses asked and God granted his request.
He may not show Himself to everyone in the same way that He showed Himself
to Moses that day, but if you begin to look at your life differently, from a
spiritual point of view, you will feel His hand covering you and sometimes
after something wonderful happens, you will look up and realize that He was
there. And when you start to seek Him more, you will find Him more.
In our next story, more of the
conversation between Moses and God. Be sure to join us again for more
exciting study of the book of Exodus, here at Daily Bread.
