TENDING THE TABERNACLE
NUMBERS
CHAPTER 3-4
It's a pleasure to have you back with
us again here at Daily Bread! We've learned recently about the numbering of
the children of Israel and how their camp was set up, and the order that
they traveled in with the tabernacle in the midst of them.
As we pick up in Chapter 3, the Lord
told Moses to bring the tribe of Levi near so he could present them to Aaron
the priest and they could serve him. They were given the responsibility of
ministering to the congregation and the keeping of the tabernacle.
God told Moses, I've taken the Levites
instead of all the firstborn of the children of Israel, so the Levites will
be mine. The Lord told Moses to number the children of Levi, and Moses
did. You can find the details of this numbering and the duties they were
given in ministering of the tabernacle of the congregation in Numbers
3:17-39.
Then the Lord told Moses, Number all
the firstborn of the males of the children of Israel from one month old and
up and take a census of their names. And you will take the Levites for me
instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel and the cattle of
the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children
of Israel. Moses did as the Lord commanded.
There were more firstborn than there
were Levites, so the Lord told Moses to take five shekels a piece for the
extra firstborn being redeemed and give the money to Aaron and his sons.
In Chapter 4 are more of the details
of each family of the Levites and their specific responsibilities regarding
their service in ministering to the priesthood.
So the Levites became the Lord's
instead of the firstborn of the children of Israel and their ministry in
serving the Lord as priests forever, began.
When we return, we'll find out about
God's laws for cleansing the camp and some laws against sin, here at your
Daily Bread. Be sure to join us again.
