BE YE DOERS OF THE WORD

Oh, how easily we forget things. How many times have you thought of something to do while sitting at your computer, and you get up and walk to another room, but by the time you get there, you've forgotten what it is that you were going to do?

That may make you chuckle, but do we forget the Word of God just as easily? When you read your Bible, or when you complete a study concerning your Christian walk, do you forget it as soon as you log off of your computer, or do you apply it to your lifestyle and remember it whenever a circumstance arises that requires a choice between right and wrong?

WHY DOES THIS OCCUR AND HOW CAN WE OVERCOME THIS?

Let us seek within the Bible for the answer.

Be Ye Doers of the Word study on Be Ye Doers of the Word meaning with Be Ye Doers of the Word message

A person can be well read, but unless they put their knowledge to use ... what good is it? You can brag all you want to about how much you know about the Bible, and you can quote scripture until the cows come home, but if you don't live the Word, you're not kidding anyone but yourself. James says it best:

James 1:22
But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

IN HIS NAME

Sometimes we may ask for something in Jesus' name, and we don't receive it, and we wonder why. Could it be that we're hearers of the Word and not doers? Jesus said:

John 15:7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Did you notice that Word ... 'abide'? That little Word means REMAIN. In other words, if you don't KEEP the WORD (Jesus) in your heart ... If you don't apply His Word to your life ... How can you ask in His name? Think about that for a moment. What does it mean to ask in Jesus' name? Does it mean simply to say the words "In the name of Jesus Christ ..."? Or does it mean, because Jesus lives in me, and because I acknowledge that with my lifestyle, I may ask in His name?

Think of it in terms of friendship for example. Let's say there is a person who thinks of you as a friend and confides in you. You listen to them, and tell them that they can count on you, but you betray their trust, tell their secrets, and don't keep your promises to them. Can you really be called their friend? Can you expect them to do things for you? The same goes with Jesus ... except He has no secrets.

If you want to carry HIS name ... if you want to be of Jesus' family, you must live by HIS Word.

Luke 8:20-21
And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And He answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the Word of God, and do it.

It takes a conscious effort to live by the Word of God every day of your life. It's a choice. That's not to say it's an easy thing to do. While the world and it's deception spins all around you, it WILL be difficult to remember to live by the Word of God ... in a Christ-like manner, at all times.

REMEMBER HOW THEY FORGOT

Even the disciples had a difficult time, and they were in the presence of Jesus almost every waking hour of His ministry. One of the memorable examples is when Jesus performed the miracle of of the loaves and fishes.

Matthew 14:15-21
And when it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto Him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to Heaven, He blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

Quite a memorable event, wouldn't you think? Well, not very long after, the same situation arose:

Matthew 15:32
Then Jesus called His disciples unto Him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

Now, one would think that disciples would have known to bring Jesus whatever they had, and trust that He would feed the multitude, but they forgot:

Matthew 15:33
And His disciples say unto Him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?

What about the Apostle Peter? He forgot that Jesus told him that before the dawn broke, he would deny his Lord three times.

Matthew 26:75
And Peter remembered the Word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

How could anyone forget that?

Don't forget that Jesus predicted this, so it HAD to happen, but in our lives, we don't have to forget ... we choose to ... daily ... ugh.

Not only did the Apostles forget, but it was almost like they disregarded Jesus when He told them of His upcoming death.

Matthew 16:21-23
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto His disciples, how that He must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took Him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But He turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Do you ever find yourself contending with the Word of God, like Jesus did? How do we do that?

DOERS OF THE WORD TRUTH OF DOERS OF THE WORD PROCEDURE WITH DOERS OF THE WORD MESSAGE

By denying that the Word applies to our lives. How many times do you think in your heart that the things in the Gospel are not for today's day and age ... that the Gospel is obsolete? Maybe we don't like to say it out loud, but deep inside, do we think that times have changed, and the Gospel cannot be adapted to this world anymore in many ways? Are we grabbing Jesus by the arm and taking Him aside, as Peter did, and saying, Look, things are different now ... are we doing that?

Jesus tries to tell them ... again ... that His Kingdom isn't what they think it's going to be.

Matthew 20:17-19
And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify Him: and the third day He shall rise again.

But still they didn't remember nor understand what He was talking about. James' and John's mother even interrupted, wanting to secure good standing for her sons in the new Kingdom.

Matthew 20:20-21
Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping Him, and desiring a certain thing of Him. And He said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto Him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy Kingdom.

Can you just picture it? The Son of God telling the twelve Apostles about the most important event in history ... their precious Lord's death on a Cross, and then two of them return with their mother shortly thereafter requesting certain positions of royalty once His Kingdom is established. Luke even explains that they argued among themselves who would be the greatest.

TIE A STRING AROUND YOUR FINGER

Do we do the same thing ... ignore the Word of God because we have other things on our mind or things that seem more important to us?

Luke 9:43-46
And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, He said unto His disciples, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask Him of that saying. Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Do we also purposefully hesitate to inquire deeper into the Word, or hesitate to seek the face of the Lord because we fear the responsibility that it may mean to us?

It wasn't until after Jesus had risen from the dead, that finally the disciples remembered the things that Jesus spoke of:

Luke 24:1-9
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the Earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how He spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered His words, And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

John 2:19-25
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But He spake of the temple of His body. When therefore He was risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the Word which Jesus had said. Now when Hhe was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in His name, when they saw the miracles which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself unto them, because He knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for He knew what was in man.

John 12:16
These things understood not His disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, THEN remembered they that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things unto Him.

If you find it difficult to remember the Word, once you close the Bible and set it down, pray to the Holy Spirit, and SINCERELY ask Him to help you to remember.

John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Remember at the beginning of our study, James said:

But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

He adds to this, that if you're not a doer, you're like a person looking at his face in a mirror ... you see your flesh ... your sin ... and you turn around, and once your face is out of your sight, you forget that you are a sinner, and continue in your sin.

James 1:23-24
For if any be a hearer of the Word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

As a Christian, you are a child of the light. Don't be enlightened only when your Bible is open, and sink back into darkness when it is closed.

Matthew 10:27
What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

Let your lifestyle speak for you.

John 15:7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

REMAIN with HIM ... Be DOERS OF THE WORD!

The rewards are miraculous!
