Remarriage

Postby Servant for Christ » Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:55 pm

What does the Scriptures say regarding remarriage? I have found that marriage should be holy and "only in the Lord" according to I Cor 7:39. I realize this scripture is speaking to a widow (and second marriage) but if the 2nd marriage is to be "only in the Lord" should not the 1st one be?

Hello ServantforChrist :)

God bless you this day, and welcome to Christianity Oasis. :)

Your question is an intriguing one -- it made me stop and think.

One would hope that the first marriage was in the Lord and in truth, but, we both know that that is not always the case, therefore, if it wasn't in the Lord and in truth, then it would not have been a real marriage, soooooooo, at that point a first real marriage in the Lord and in truth had not yet taken place. If that be the case, then, any upcoming marriage would be the first (if in the Lord and in truth), and not a remarriage.

However, that may just be a study in semantics -- or maybe not???

In the 4th chapter of the Book of John, the Samaritan woman at the well: we read that she had had 5 husbands. Yet, Jesus stated that she has no husband (verses 17 and 18). The Bible doesn't mention anything about whether the previous 5 husbands died or not...it merely says that she has no husband. Jesus also mentions that the man she was currently with, was not her husband -- I take that to mean that she never bothered going through a marriage ceremony with that one, but was living with him. But, I could be wrong.

What I do know is that Jesus loved her, and He knew everything about her, and their time together was precious to both of them, and she was forever changed. Hallelujah!!! Thank You Jesus!!!

Our spiritual union with Christ Jesus allows us to know His will for our life. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Thank you for your question. I look forward to hearing your understanding on this topic. I hope others will share what their heart-felt understanding is, as well.

God bless and keep you, ServantforChrist.
In Christ Jesus' love,
Sister Mack

If you want to know what the bible has to say about marriage and divorce then you best be pullin up a chair and kickin open the book because you have a LOOONG road ahead of you in your research. The bible says a lot about marriage and divorce and adultery and remarriage. I have to say I personally disagree with Mack on a couple different topics here but I am not going to get into disputing anyone opinions. We all have one and we all have the right to one. I am going to say though if you want to really get a good beginning on researching Gods standards of marriage then there is a few things you should do.

One is figure out why you have the urge to seeking his standards, Meaning are you seeking to understand his standards so you can mold your current marriage according to his standards or are you wanting to know what his standards are so you can better understand his grace and why it is so important.

Find a good solid study bible that you have learn to trust, many people have issues with certain versions of the bible so if you are one that has trust issues in certain version then make sure you get one you know you will be comfortable with. This is not a topic you will want to be doubting the book in which you are seeking the truth in.
It might even be good to get a copy of a computer version of the bible such as e-sword. that is what I have and it makes it easy to research scripture.

Secondly find a good search engine such as Google or Bing or Yahoo.

Thirdly get a note book or a 3 ring binder full of paper to make notes on and get a good writing utensil. You will be making a LOT of notes through the process of your research.

And lastly after you do all that and find yourself a good comfortable place to either sit or recline and prop you feet up for the duration now start using the search engine to find the location of the scripture you seek by asking it basic question such as what does the bible say about divorce, or marriage, or adultery, and then look up the scripture it gives you in the bible you chose and write down all that you find relevant to you search.
After you get a foundation of scripture set, then you need to ask God to answer any confusion or questions you may have. If you are truly seeking he will help you make sense out of all the things that don't.
