Down the Road
Chapter Thirty-Three

Kaye Leigh did not go with them to the airport, she had cried all morning helping everyone get ready to leave and then when they leaving she broke down again, so they told her to stay home and rest. Becki had gone with Jeff, while Curtis stayed with Kaye Leigh.

"Curtis will you do me a favor Monday?" she asked when she went out to the stable after she had calmed down.

"Sure boss what is it?" he asked.

"Well I've been extremely mean to Becki these past few days and I want to make it up to her and you. I want you to take her into Pleasant Ridge for the day, go to the show, and take her shopping and whatever else she wants." She said handing him an envelope with money in it.

"Why don't you take her?" he asked. "You don't have to make anything up to me."

"I really need to make an appointment to get into the doctor Monday and I was going to go see Pastor Mark if I could." She said.

"I can do that for you then, anything for you." He said smiling.

"Thanks Curtis you've been a really great friend, just one more thing please don't mention this to Jeff." She said. Curtis looked at her.

"Why what are you hiding from Jeff?" he asked.

"Nothing, I just don't want him to worry more about me, and I don't want anyone to know that I'm going to see Pastor Mark yet." She said.

"Ok, I will keep my mouth shut then." He said. She gave him a hug and left.

They had not told their parents that she was pregnant, Jeff wanted to tell them before they left, but Kaye Leigh did not want to, she did not want them to know before she left. Kaye Leigh spent the rest of the afternoon finishing the arrangements so they could leave Monday while everyone was gone and getting everything ready so that everything would go to Jeff once the divorce was finalized. Not only was she leaving the ranch to him, but she was leaving most of the money with him too.

When Jeff and Becki got home, Kaye Leigh had dinner ready. The kids had gone to stay at friends houses and would come home after church tomorrow. Curtis had come for dinner, and then they sat down and watched a couple of movies. Kaye Leigh cleaned up the living room and kitchen before she went up to bed; Jeff was already in the room when she got there.

She went into the bathroom to change and when she came out Jeff said, "I have something for you Kaye Leigh." She looked at him.

"What's that?" she said smiling.

"Turn around and lift up your hair." He told her. She did as she was asked. When she lifted her hair, he put a necklace around her neck and clasped it in back. It was a cross exactly like the one he had given her when they rededicated their lives to Christ.

"It's beautiful, thank you Jeff." She said with tears in her eyes.

She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him deeply. When they broke apart, he looked at her and said. "Are you sure Kaye Leigh?" she nodded and kissed him again, later she fell asleep wrapped in her husbands' arms knowing that this part of her life was ending.

The next morning Jeff asked if she was going to church.

"Not yet." She said. "I'm not ready." He smiled at her.

"I'll be with you whenever you are ready." He said.

She kissed him and said "Thank you."

While everyone was gone, Kaye Leigh packed some of their things and put them in the truck where they would not be seen. She wasn't going to leave a note this time, because there wasn't anything left to say, she wasn't coming back and he, she was sure wasn't going to look for her.

Pastor Mark had asked about Kaye Leigh and said that he would try to get out and see her this week.

"Thanks." Jeff said.

"Jeff, how are you holding up?" Mr. Fisher asked.

"I'm good." He replied.

"That's good to hear." Mr. Fisher replied.

When he left, Jon looked at him and said, "What was that about?"

"Not sure." He said laughing.

"You seem in a better mood today." Jon said. "I take it you're getting through to Kaye Leigh?"

Jeff smiled and said, "I think were making progress."

After the service, Jon and his family came over to Jeff and Kaye Leigh's for a cookout.

"Hi guys, I wasn't expecting you today." She said when they got out of their car.

"I invited them over for a cook out I hope you don't mind." Jeff said kissing her.

"Of course not." She replied thinking that it would less time for her to deal with everything else and they had a great afternoon visiting.

When they were leaving, Kaye Leigh gave everyone a hug and said good-bye.

"What are you up to Kaye Leigh?" Jon asked.

"What do you mean?" she said.

"You're acting kind of strange, like you're not going to see us again." He said.

"Don't be silly, I'm just saying good bye." She assured him. "You're making too much out of it." He smiled at her.

"If you're sure." He said.

"I am Jon." She said. He kissed her cheek and turned away so he would not see she had tears in her eyes.

"Watch out for her, she's acting strange." Jon whispered to Jeff.

"I will." He said.

"Are you ok?" Jeff asked.

"Yes, just a little emotional." She said. He laughed and gave her a hug. That night when Kaye Leigh said goodnight to Dan and Faith she started to cry again.

"Are you sure you're ok?" Jeff asked when they got to their room.

"Yes, I'm fine just being silly. You know the kids grow up fast." She said.

"You are silly you know that right?" he said hugging her.

"I know this is what happens when I am pregnant." She told him.

"Well you can be silly anytime you want to." He said.

"Good night Jeff." She said kissing him.

"Night Kaye Leigh." He replied.

Early in the morning, she woke Jeff up with a kiss.

"Morning." He said sleepily.

"Good morning." She said smiling at him.

"What time is it?" he asked.

"You've got a while before you have to get up." She said kissing him again.

Kaye Leigh had gone down stairs to start coffee and breakfast. The kids were getting ready for school, and Jeff was getting ready for work, this was going to be their last time together.

"That was a great wake-up call." Jeff said kissing her and putting his arms around her. "You will have to wake me up like that more often." She smiled at him.

"I love you Jeff, I always will." She told him.

"I love you too Kaye Leigh. I will see you tonight." He said and gave her a kiss good-bye.

When everyone was gone Kaye Leigh hurried upstairs, took a shower, got dressed and got the rest of their things packed, she would have to have Jeff pack up the bigger things and she would have him take them to Mr. Fisher, then he could send them too her.

Curtis was down stairs waiting for Becki so they could go into Pleasant Ridge.

"What are you going to do today?" Becki asked.

"Hopefully go to the doctor." She said.

"Good, you'll have to let us know what they say." Becki said.

"Have a great time you two." She said hugging both of them.

When she was sure they were gone, she loaded the luggage into the truck and headed to the school to pick up the kids.

"Hi Sally, I need to get Josh and Grace please." She said when she got to the office at the school.

"Sure, I'll call them down." Sally said. "Will they be back today?"

"No they won't." she said.

"Hey mom what are you doing here?" Dan asked.

"I need to take Josh and Grace to an appointment." She said quickly, hating herself for lying to him.

"Mom." Josh said coming in.

"Hi guys, do you have everything?" she asked.

"Yeah." Grace said.

"Then let's go." Kaye Leigh said. She held the door open for them.

"See you later mom." Dan said.

"Why are you getting us out of school?" Josh asked.

"We're going somewhere." She said.

"Why isn't Dan and Faith going too?" Grace asked.

"Because we're not coming back." She said wiping away tears.

"What are you talking about mom?" Josh said stopping.

"We'll talk about it later, now come on Josh." She said.

"You're leaving dad aren't you?" he said still not moving.

"Come on Josh please we need to go." She said.

"Not until you call dad and tell him what you're doing." He said.

"Joshua Thomas, get into this car now!" She yelled. He glared at her. "You can be mad all you want to Josh, but you will do as I say." She said.

He got into the truck and slammed the door. Grace got into the back and she was crying. They arrived at the airport and had gotten their luggage checked in just as their flight was being called to board. Kaye Leigh hurried the kids onto the plane and got settled in their seats.

"Where are we going?" Josh snapped.

"North Carolina." She replied.

"Oh where you lived with Sam, is that what this is about you want to be with him?" Josh said.

"Keep your voice down Josh, I know you're mad at me and that's fine, but until you can treat me with respect I will not explain anything to you." She told him.

"Answer one question mom, do you love dad?" Josh said looking at her. Tears filled her eyes.

"I love him more than anything Josh, nothing will ever take the place of him in my heart, but he deserves more and I know you don't understand that right now, but someday you will." She said tears falling.

"Does this have anything to do with Sam?" Grace asked.

"No honey it doesn't North Carolina is the last place anyone would think to look for me, and I know the city were going to a little, that's why I chose it. I thought we could live close to the ocean." She said.

"What about the baby?" Josh said. "Is dad going to be able to see it?"

"I haven't gotten that far Josh." She said. "We will talk more when we get there and get settled."

Becki and Curtis had gotten back to the house around three, Jeff was there with Faith and Dan, Jon, and Alexis pulled in right after Curtis and Becki.

"Hey guys, do you want to go to the show with me?" Alexis asked the kids.

"Is it ok dad?" Faith asked.

"Sure, go have some fun." Jeff told them. He gave the kids a hug.

When they had left, Curtis asked, "What's wrong?"

"Kaye Leigh left." He said.

"What?" Becki said.

"I got these today at the office." He said handing Jon an envelope. Jon opened it and read the papers inside.

"She's going through with the divorce, giving you the ranch and most of her money." Jon said shocked.

"What?" Becki said.

"I tried calling her but she was already gone by then. She took Josh and Grace out of school and left, no note or explanation or anything." He said.

"That's why she wanted Becki and me out of here." Curtis said. "How could I have been so stupid?" He sat down and put his head in his hands.

"What are you going to do Jeff?" Becki asked.

"Give her the divorce." He replied.

"What are you talking about?" Jon said.

"I can't make her come back and I can't chase her again." He said.

"I thought you said you would never give her up." Becki said tears falling.

"I thought she loved me enough not to leave me." He said.

"Jeff that's not fair, you know how she is!" Jon said angrily. "You can't do this."

"I can and I am Jon." Jeff said getting up. "She's free to do whatever it is she wants." He went into the house.
