I’m so
glad that you decided to continue to keep going with me!
Sooooooo…let’s talk more about this feeling and ideology
that being a self injurer is part of who you are. Most
of us who self harm, truly believe that. We feel like
we’ve lost part or most of our true identity because self
harm
has become a huge part of our life.
SELF INJURY SELF HARM STUDY ON
SELF INJURY SELF HARM ORIGINS WITH
SELF INJURY SELF HARM MESSAGE
What
are some of the descriptions those who self harm use about
themselves?
Used.
Broken. Torn. Stained. Tainted. Damaged. Shattered.
Unfixable. Unnoticed. Cold. Heartless. Lifeless.
Stupid. Ugly. Fat. Weak. Garbage.
USELESS AND UNWORTHY
|
God couldn’t possibly
use you for anything…
God?
What
does God have to do with any of this?
He has
EVERYTHING to do with it.
Simply
because it was HIM who made YOU.
Isaiah 49:1
… The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of
my mother hath he made mention of my name.
|
Psalm 139:13
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my
mother's womb.
|
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God
created he him; male and female created he them.
|
He
created you in your mother’s womb.
He
knew you before you were even born.
Weird,
huh?
It's
like creating a piece of art…
or a writing a song…
You
ENVISION this finished masterpiece in your head first.
Then… as you start working on it, you might tweak it here
and
there… not because you messed up… but because as you work on
it more and more… you find ways to make it even better!
Art is
not simply paint, canvas, and brushes. It’s the story you
can see behind the finished piece of art.
Music
is not simply black notes written on a page. It’s the
lyrics, melody, beat and passion you hear behind the composition.
It is
YOU-NIQUE
Just
as you are.
HAND
CRAFTED
SELF INJURY SELF HARM TRUTH WITH
SELF INJURY SELF HARM BLESSING BRINGING FORTH
SELF INJURY SELF HARM HOPE
God
designed you by hand.
Though
you may have similarities to other people, there is not one
soul with the exact same as YOU.
Your smile was designed specifically for you.
Your
laugh is unique.
Your
gifts and talents are God-given.
Your
personality is like no one else. No one
else has the exact same footprint shape in the sand.
You
are a pearl… a treasure… hidden within.
No
one’s shell looks exactly like yours.
No
one’s shell has been in all the same places as you.
No
one has the same inner or outer beauty as the pearl you are.
No one
has the same sparkle and shine as your heart is made to
have.
No one
has the same experiences.
No one can reach the people you
can the exact same way. Some people can only be reached and
helped by you… because no one can understand them, except
you. You have the experiences to really understand them.
To really know how they feel.
God,
You know our lives and You know US.
We’re an open book to You; even from a distance, you know
what we’re thinking.
You
know when we leave and when we get back; We’re never out of
Your sight.
You
know everything we’re going to say before we start the first
sentence.
We
look behind us and You're there, then up ahead and You're
there, too—
Your reassuring presence is always with us.

Psalm 139:1-5
O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my
downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought
afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and
art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in
my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand
upon me.

You’re
special.
In all the world there’s nobody like you.
Since
the beginning of time there has never been another person
like you.
Nobody
has your thoughts, nobody has your eyes, your nose, your hair,
your hands, your voice.
You’re
special.
No one can be found who has your handwriting.
Nobody
anywhere has your tastes for food, clothing, music, or art.
No one
sees things just as you do.
In all
of time there’s been no one who laughs like you, no one who
cries like you, and what makes you cry or laugh will never
produce identical laughter and tears from anybody else,
ever.
You’re
the only YOU in all of creation.
Oh,
there will always be somebody who is better at one of the
things you’re good at, but no one in the universe can reach
the quality of your combination of talents, ideas, abilities
and feelings. Like a room full of musical instruments, some
may excel alone, but none can match the symphony sound when
all are played together.
You’re a symphony.
Through all of eternity, no one will ever look, walk, talk,
think or do like you.
You’re
special…you’re rare.
And in
all rarity there is great value.
Because of your great
value you need no attempt to imitate others…you will
accept--yes, celebrate your differences.
You’re
special and you’re beginning to realize it’s no accident
that you’re special.
You’re
beginning to see that God made you special for a purpose.
He
must have a job for you that no one else can do as well as
you.
Out of
billions of applicants, only one is qualified, only one has
the right combination of what it takes.
That
one is you, because… you’re special.

YOU
ARE ONE OF
A KIND
You
know how we might try to change our appearance and/or
personality to either get people to like us more (including
ourselves)?
There’s no need for that anymore.
SELF INJURY SELF HARM TRUTH WITH
SELF INJURY SELF HARM LIES AND
SELF INJURY SELF HARM CONCERNS
We were made and designed
by the same God that created the world, the universe, the
stars, the birds… EVERYTHING.
He
created us.
For us
to try to change who we really are only insults Him… and can
get in the way of the awesome plan He has for us.
We
don’t have to put that effort into perfecting ourselves any
longer… but just be who we are.
Remember in our first talk when we talked about how it feels
at times like our struggle with self harm has become part
of our identity?
I’m a
cutter.
I’m a
pill popper.
I’m a
burner.
I’m a
scratcher.
I’m a
banger.
I’m an
alcoholic.
I’m a
purger.
I’m an
addict.
|
Now…
we can have a different view of it.
We are NOT those
things.
Not even one of them.
We are
a treasure in Christ.
We ARE something special.
Oh
yes,
You shaped us first inside, then out; You formed us in
our mother's womb.
…
Body and soul, we are marvelously made!
You
know us inside and out, You know every bone in our bodies;
You
know exactly how we were made, bit by bit, how we were
sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, You watched us grow from conception to
birth; all the stages of our lives were spread out before
you,
|
The
days of our lives all prepared before we even lived one day.
Psalm 139:13-16
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my
mother's womb. ... for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right
well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made
in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the
earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect;
and in thy book all my members were written, which in
continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of
them.

IMAGINE A HUGE SAND DUNE…
God’s
precious thoughts about us outweigh the number of grains of
sand…
Psalm 139:17-18
How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great
is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in
number than the sand ...
|
Wow…
That’s a lot of precious thoughts about one person!
So,
back to the original question:
What
are some of the descriptions those who self harm use about
themselves?
Used.
Broken. Torn. Stained. Tainted. Damaged. Shattered.
Unfixable. Unnoticed. Cold. Heartless. Lifeless. Stupid.
Ugly. Fat. Weak. Garbage.
USELESS AND UNWORTHY
God couldn’t possibly use you
for anything…
|
We now
know those lies couldn’t be any farther from TRUTH.
Starting to get a different perspective of yourself yet?
SELF INJURY SELF HARM JOURNEY WITH
SELF INJURY SELF HARM HEALING AND
SELF INJURY SELF HARM HOPE
Let’s
journal about that today …Maybe jot down the difference between how we
used to see ourselves verses how God sees us (and how we
SHOULD see us). Maybe jot down a thank you prayer to God
thanking Him for spending so much time making you unique.
Ask that He begin to change your heart from within as we
struggle with how we view ourselves. What stood out to you
today? Is there anything you have a hard time accepting?
Why do you think that is? What would help you overcome it?
Maybe
add some notes on your bathroom mirror about how beautiful
you are and how unique God made. Pick out your favorite
verses from today so you can be reminded every time you look
in the mirror. Every time you think you’re ugly or useless…
remind yourself how much thought God put into making you.
You’re
beautiful, unique, and perfect… just the way you were made
to be.
I’ll
see you on the next page when you are ready to continue!
