Matthew 13:54-58

55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

58 And He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

As you can imagine, everyone was staring at Jesus after He quoted what He had read. He then tells the people "Today, this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears" ... Again, this meant that what Jesus had just read, was happening to them right then and right there and that it was He, who Isaiah was talking about in that Scripture. I bet you could have heard a pin drop there for a few seconds as they absorbed what Jesus meant.

They became outraged as the doubt and then chaos increased. They did not believe Jesus and they said to one another, Isn't this Joseph's son? They doubted that He could be who He said that He was because they knew Him as a child growing up there. He was from their own town. They knew His parents. This just could not be. Though the Bible Prophecy before Jesus arrived was clear that the Messiah would be one among the people. Someone from their own home country:

Deuteronomy 18:15

The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto Him ye shall hearken;

Their response is exactly what, A prophet is not without honor (Meaning that the Prophet does receive honor) EXCEPT from those who believe that they know Him. Including in His own family.

Jesus said, Truly I say to you, No prophet is believed in His own country. But, I will tell you the truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah when it did not rain for 3½ years and great famine swept the land, but Elijah was only sent to one widow, in Sidon. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, but none of them were cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian.
