MODERN DAY PROPHETS
There are some people who
believe that God no longer sends messengers to spread His
Word in the world today. Some believe that since Jesus'
first visit, there haven't been any Prophets of God to
deliver His message.
Someone
once said that in our world today, people persecute living
Prophets, and praise dead Saints. What's the TRUTH of the
matter? Are there still people in today's world that God
speaks through? Let's take a look in the Bible and see what
we can find, shall we?
Perhaps one
of the reasons why some people believe there are no longer
Prophets of God in our time is this scripture from the Old
Testament:
|
Amos 8:11-12
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will
send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor
a thirst for water, but of hearing the Words of the
LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from
the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro
to seek the Word of the LORD, and shall not find it. |
If you read
the lines of this scripture carefully, you'll find that God
said there would be no hearing of the
Words of the Lord, NOT no speaking of them.
If you read
between the lines of this scripture, you may even
conclude that this might be speaking of what God said
through the Prophet Isaiah concerning the Israelites:
|
Isaiah 6:9-12
And He said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed,
but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive
not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their
ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with
their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand
with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Then
said I, Lord, how long? And He answered, Until the
cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses
without man, and the land be utterly desolate, And the
LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great
forsaking in the midst of the land. |
And in
fact, they are still seeking the Word of the Lord. Jesus,
the Messiah was sent, and right before their very eyes, was
not only the spoken Word of the Lord, but the Word made
flesh ... And though they sought Him for an incredibly long
time, they did not recognize Him. Many are still awaiting.
There may
be other reasons why people don't believe there are Prophets
of God in our generation ... but didn't most every
generation believe that?
|
Matthew 23:29-36
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
because ye build the tombs of the Prophets, and
garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, And say, If
we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not
have been partakers with them in the blood of the
Prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves,
that ye are the children of them which killed the
Prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye
escape the damnation of hell?
Wherefore, behold,
I send unto you
Prophets, and wise men, and scribes:
and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some
of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and
persecute them from city to city: That upon you may
come all the righteous blood shed upon the Earth, from
the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of
Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the
Temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these
things shall come upon this generation. |
Some people
believe that the New Testament rendered the "Prophet"
obsolete. The Apostle Paul certainly believed there would be
more Prophets. Paul quoted Elijah while explaining in his
letter to the Romans that God said he wouldn't forsake His
people, but that there would be plenty of Prophets to
continue to deliver the Word:
|
Romans 11:2-5
God hath not cast away His people which He foreknew.
Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he
maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,
Lord, they have killed thy Prophets, and digged down
thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my
life. But what saith the answer of God unto him? I
have reserved to myself
seven thousand men,
who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. Even
so then at this present time also there is a remnant
according to the election of Grace. |
All that
aside ... The question is simple ... Does God still use
prophets AFTER Jesus died for our sins?
The Bible
states point blank that there were Prophets after Jesus'
first visit ...
|
Acts 21:8-9
And the next day we that were of Paul's company
departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into
the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of
the seven; and abode with him. And the same man had
four daughters, virgins,
which did prophesy. |
|
Acts 13:1
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch
certain Prophets
and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called
Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had
been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. |
|
Acts 15:32
And Judas and Silas, being
Prophets
also themselves,
exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed
them. |
|
Acts 21:10-11
And as we tarried there many days, there came down
from Judæa a certain
Prophet, named Agabus.
And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle,
and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith
the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind
the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him
into the hands of the Gentiles. |
Prophecy is
the Spiritually inspired declaration of God's will and
purpose which is yet to happen. The events in the entire
book of Revelation are yet to happen, so St. John must have
been a Prophet. By the way, the Revelation was written in
about 90 AD ... that is, AFTER Jesus.
|
Amos 3:7
Surely the Lord
GOD will do nothing, but He revealeth His secret unto
His servants the Prophets. |
If a
Prophet is a man or woman that hears God Word and shares it
with others ... Are not Peter, Paul and many others over the
years ... Prophets?
God still
uses mankind to share His Word.
THIS is the
Spiritual gift of of Prophecy.
|
1 Corinthians 13:2
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand
all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have
all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have
not charity, I am nothing. |
When
speaking to CHRISTIANS ...
PROPHECY was one of the Spiritual gifts that is given by the
HOLY SPIRIT to Christians.
|
Romans 12:6
Having then gifts differing according to the
Grace that is given to us, whether
prophecy,
let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; |
Sooooooo,
if we are to believe that if there are no longer Prophets,
does that mean that EVERYTHING that God has planned has
already been revealed? Heavens no! GOD SAID there will be
MORE Prophets.
|
Acts 2:16-18
But this is that which was spoken by the Prophet Joel
(Joel 2:28-29); And it shall come to pass
in the last days, saith
God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my
handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my
Spirit; and they
shall prophesy
... |
You never
know who God will choose and use as a Prophet:
|
Matthew 21:15-16
And when the chief priests and scribes saw the
wonderful things that He did, and the children crying
in the Temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of
David; they were sore displeased, And said unto Him,
Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto
them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of
babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? |
The word of
God may come through a child! In fact, one of the four major
Prophets of the Bible was just a child when he was called by
God to prophesy:
|
Jeremiah 1:4-10
Then the Word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before
I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before
thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee,
and I ordained thee a Prophet unto the nations. Then
said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am
a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a
child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send
thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
Be not afraid of their faces: for I am
with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
Then the LORD put forth His hand, and touched my
mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put
my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee
over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out,
and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down,
to build, and to plant. |
Don't be
mistaken, there are many false prophets in the world today,
but there ARE Prophets of God as well. Does your face hold
the doubt or condemnation that God spoke of when He told
Jeremiah not to fear the faces of the people?
Open your
mind and heart when you contemplate on whether or not there
are still Prophets of God, delivering His Word to us on
Earth today. If you're waiting for someone with a long robe,
sandals, a beard, a staff and emitting an aura around his
head ... you will be waiting for a long time.
God uses
people like you and I ...
|
1 Corinthians 1:26-28
For ye see your calling,
brethren, how that not many wise
men after the flesh,
not many mighty,
not many noble,
are called:
But God hath chosen the foolish
things of the world to confound the wise;
and God hath chosen the weak things
of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
And base things of the world, and
things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things
which are not, to bring to nought things that are. |
