It's a great day to share more Daily Bread together. Welcome back to our study of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians. Last time we shared the Word, we talked about immorality. So what happens when you're the victim of someone else's immorality?

Well, ordinarily, people take the accused party to court. That, of course is when worldly matters are concerned. But what about when you're offended by a fellow Christian? Let's go back to our letter from Paul because the Corinthians were taking one another to court for trivial matters. Paul's advice:

1 Corinthians 6:1-2

1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the Saints?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? ...

Controversial Bible Topics Point of Interest ... In other words, if any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare go to court before unbelievers instead of believers? Don't you know that the Saints will judge the world? So, what do we need a carnal minded judge?

Look at these Christian Controversy Scriptures that confirm this:

Psalms 49:14

Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.


Daniel 7:22

Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the Saints of the most High; and the time came that the Saints possessed the Kingdom.


Revelation 2:26

And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

Continuing now, more from Paul:

1 Corinthians 6:2-3

2 ... and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

Paul is showing them the reasoning, And if you're worthy of judging the world (world sized problems), are you unable to judge little problems? Don't you know that we will judge angels? So, doesn't it stand to reason that we are able, all the more, to discern daily life stuff (trivial matters)?

Wait, wait wait wait, let's back up a sec, we will judge angels? How can that be? Well, namely, bad angels.

Jude 1:6

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Controversial Bible Topics Reminder ... Did you forget that Satan is an angel? Have you ever heard of the fallen angels? You can do some interesting research on fallen angels in The Book of Enoch . Now, Paul goes on:

1 Corinthians 6:4

If then ye have judgments [hearings, testimonies, conflicts] of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the Church.

Why would you want to do that? (Hmmm, I wouldn't.) Exactly! You wouldn't. So that would encourage you to settle conflicts for yourselves.

Paul, still befuddled about the whole idea of brethren taking one another to man's court to judge one another writes:

1 Corinthians 6:5-8

5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.
7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.

Let's do a little more, "today's jargon" of what Paul is saying. It may be something like, I'm ashamed of you, You should be ashamed, This is a shame, What a shame, Shame on you, Shame shame shame. Can it be that there isn't a single wise man among all of you (yes, you who will be judging angels) who is capable of judging between his own brethren? But brother goes to court against brother ... And before the unbelievers no less! It's wrong that you go to law with one another.

Here comes a doozey! But first I thought I'd better give you some gentle reminders so you won't think that I'm bordering on ridiculous here. First of all, nobody ever said that being a Christian was easy. Not even Jesus. Easy, no; rewarding, yes!

Reminder #1. Let's go back to the Beatitudes for a moment.

Matthew 5:11-12

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Notice Jesus didn't say anything about getting justice in this life when those things happen.

Reminder #2. Now let's skip over to when the Apostles were preaching about Jesus in Jerusalem.

Acts 5:40-41

40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the Apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.

You probably noticed that both of those reminders involved attacks against your Christianity, but stick with me here.

Reminder #3. Next we're going all the way back to where the wisest man to ever live, king Solomon, wrote:

Proverbs 20:22

Say not thou, I will recompense [repay] evil; but wait on the Lord, and He shall save thee.

Alright, now you are reminded that meek doesn't mean weak. And your first gut reaction to Paul's next sentence will no longer be that vengeance is necessary for survival in life. Ready? Let's continue. Paul says:

1 Corinthians 6:7

Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong [leave it be and not retaliate]? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded [cheated]?

Paul is asking, Is it better to be adamant about winning a trivial case against your brother, and disgrace the Christian name, or are you so unforgiving that you can't settle even for the cause?

Peter agrees with this ideology:

1 Peter 2:19-23

19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

Paul again:

1 Corinthians 6:8-10

8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the Kingdom of God.

No, you do wrong and cheat, and you do it to your own fellow believers! Don't you know that you're messing with your inheritance in the Kingdom of God?

Do you detect a little shaking of Paul's head with a little tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk as he was writing this?

Ask yourself: Is vengeance more important than your inheritance of God's Promise? Is it so important to you for nobody to think you're a fool if you don't get back at someone for some injustice that they committed against you? Do you not believe that vengeance belongs to the Lord?

1 Corinthians 6:11

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Paul did give credit where credit was due. Now Paul takes a different direction:

1 Corinthians 6:12

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient [advantageous]: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

The New Testament has made us free from the old law, but we must still remain righteous. We don't let ourselves be controlled by any kind of carnal desires.

1 Corinthians 6:13-15

13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ?

Don't forget that many Christian ideologies were new to the Gentiles and obviously some of the things they had previously viewed as commonplace have no place in a Christian lifestyle. So Paul is explaining that food was made for the body and the body for food, but the body was not made for fornication ... But now that we are one with Christ, our body is for the Lord.

1 Corinthians 6:15-20

15 ... shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith He, shall be one flesh. [ Genesis 2:24]
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee [run away from] fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the Temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
