King David Bible Study Discussion
King David in the Bible Lesson

Nice to see you here again to share more Daily Bread! Last time in our story, king David was on his way back home to Jerusalem after being chased away by his son Absalom. Though Israel and Judah both want David as king again, we left the story with them arguing with each other about who had more claim to the king.Let's see what happens next ...

While the men of Israel and the men of Judah disputed over the matter, a wicked man named Sheba, from the tribe of Benjamin, stood among the people and blowing a trumpet announced, "We have no inheritance in David, no share in Jesse's son. Every man to his tent, O Israel!"

So believe it or not, every man of Israel left David and followed Sheba, but the men of Judah stayed close to the king. You read it right! Did they not just learn their lesson with Absalom? Were they not just seconds ago the very same men that were arguing that they had more rights to be David's servants and escort him home than the men of Judah? But along comes one crackpot with a trumpet and the multitudes follow his idea as if they were hypnotized!

Welcome King David in the Bible

David arrived at his house in Jerusalem and took the 10 women (his concubines) that he had left to take care of the palace (the same women that Absalom defiled in front of all of Israel), and put them in a house under a guard. He fed them and took care of them, but they were no longer treated as wives. They were kept in confinement until they died, living as widows.

Then the king said to Amasa, "Get the men of Judah ready within three days and bring them here to me." So Amasa went to gather the men but three days came and went and Amasa hadn't returned. So David said to Abishai, "Sheba will do us more harm than Absalom. Take my servants and go after him or he'll find fenced cities and escape."

So Joab's men and the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all David's mighty warriors followed Abishai in search of Sheba.

When they got to Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them with the men he had rounded up. Now, Joab had a belt on with a sheath, and as he stepped forward to greet Amasa, he made sure that his sword fell out, but made it look like it was an accident. Joab asked Amasa, "How are ya pal?" And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand pretending that he was gonna kiss him, but Joab picked up the sword with his other hand and struck Amasa under the fifth rib and killed him. Then Joab and Abishai, his brother, went after Sheba together.

Impetuous fellow, that Joab, isn't he? He killed Abner because he was jealous of him being appointed an equal ranking with him upon Saul's death, but he sort of had an excuse for that because Abner had also killed Joab's brother Asahel, remember? Then there was the Absalom incident. But now, Amasa was also a threat to his position, being put in an equal ranking as well, but this time there's no excuse for Amasa's death ... Other than pure jealousy. Let's see what happens.

One of Joab's men stood by him and said, "If you're on king David's side, follow Joab his general!" Amasa meanwhile lay dead in a pool of blood, and as one would expect, anyone passing by would stop and gawk at him. So Joab's man pulled Amasa's body out of the road into a field and covered him with a cloth, so the soldiers would follow Joab to pursue after Sheba without stopping to gaze at Amasa's corpse.

They caught up with Sheba at a fenced city called Abel, and Joab ordered his men to surround the city and destroy the walls of it. During this siege, a woman cried out to Joab to speak to him. She told him that there was an old saying that went like this:

2 Samuel 20:18

... They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matter.

In other words ... Get your answer at Abel, and then your situation would be settled. She continued, "I live here in peace and I'm faithful to Israel. You're about to destroy a city that has been here a long time. Why do you want to destroy the Lord's inheritance?"

Joab answered, "I don't want to destroy your city. The man Sheba has rebelled against king David. Turn him over to me, and I'll leave the city alone."

The woman answered, "His head will be thrown to you over the wall." Then she consulted with the people of her city and they cut off the head of Sheba and threw it out to Joab. And the matter was ended, just like the old saying goes! Joab blew a trumpet and the army retreated from the city, and everyone went home.
