How do people remember things? Well, sometimes if something has a significant impact on a person, they find it easy to remember, but many times, repetition is the way we plant things in our memory.

In this part of Moses speech, he tells the Hebrews these famous words:

Deuteronomy 6:4-6

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Moses continues (concerning the commandments, statutes, and judgments that he taught them), Teach them to your children, and talk about them when you sit in your homes, and when you walk down the street, and before you go to sleep, and when you wake up in the morning.

Tie a string around your finger to remind you of them, strap them between your eyes, write them above the door of your house and on your gates ... In other words, Moses is saying, Surround yourself with the Word of God. Do whatever you've gotta do, so that His Word becomes part of you, and you never forget it.

How about a little Daily Bread stick? Surround yourself with things that remind you of God and your new walk with Him. When you first wake up, say "Good Morning" to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Hide and watch ... The times that you remember to do this, does your day go better? Put something on your nightstand, or on your bathroom mirror that will remind you that He is waiting for you to talk to Him.

Attach a note to your kitchen cabinet, above your washing machine, on the refrigerator, or anywhere and everywhere to remind you to greet Him throughout the day. Write a reminder in permanent marker on the top of your coffee machine if making coffee is what you do first thing every morning.

So, why else should you surround yourself with things that remind you of God? Because you become as what you surround yourself with. Your eyes are the portal to the soul, so wouldn't it be a good idea to influence your soul with holy things?

We are greatly influenced by what our eyes are exposed to. If you want to be conformed to the image of God, surround yourself with Godly things. It doesn't go with your décor? God doesn't mind. He will redecorate your entire life when you choose Him first.

Moses goes on ... When you get to the Promised Land, and you inherit cities which you didn't build yourselves, and houses full of good things which you didn't fill, and wells which you didn't dig, and vineyards and orchards which you didn't plant, and you have partaken and are satisfied, be careful that you don't forget God, who provided it all, because there will be temptation to turn away from Him, and if you choose to worship other gods ... You will be destroyed.

Do what is right, and teach your children that the Lord gave you these laws so that all will be well.

Can we talk turkey for a moment?

I'm always taking about how the Old Testament is ... The "Old" Testament, and it's the New Testament that we are to live by, right?

Well, let me ask you, How many of us give the Word of God (the New Testament in particular) the kind of attention that Moses is talking about in this chapter?

Let me remind you that Jesus quoted those words that Moses spoke to Israel (or maybe it was Moses who quoted Jesus speaking through him):

Matthew 22:36-38

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.

If we loved the Lord with all our heart and all our soul and all our might, wouldn't it be effortless to talk about Him when we wake, through the day, and until we go to sleep? Yet we find it so hard to give God but a few moments most days.

How to Love the Lord With All Your Heart Conclusion

Now, think about this ... Have you ever been in love? Did you think about that person morning, noon and night? Can you ever remember a day when you thought about God that much? Yet we're supposed to love Him that much each and every day of our lives.

Is all well in our lives? Perhaps we need to really Love the Lord with all our hearts, and then see if we don't find changes in our lives for the better. I'm not talking about material gain of any kind. I'm talking about the maturing of your soul and the blessing that you will obtain from uniting your life with Christ.

Try it!
