The Mystery of Christ Bible Study Truth
The Christian Mystery Quest

Great to have you back again here at Daily Bread! Let me remind you where we were in our study of this letter from Paul to the Ephesians and to the faithful in Christ. Our author, the Apostle Paul, as you know, is very passionate about his writings. Although he wrote many of his epistles from prison, from his view, he was writing to people who were (are) imprisoned by the world.

Notice in the first line of this chapter, whose prisoner Paul chooses to be. He has just explained to us how God, through the New Testament and the blood of Christ, has provided all people equal hope of eternal life. In this chapter, he refers to this as the mystery of Christ.

You may want to refresh your memory about the "mystery" in Christian Guidelines, the last chapter Daily Bread study from The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans.

This chapter begins with Paul saying that God showed him the mystery of eternal life for all who choose, so he could reveal it to the Gentiles, because in the past, they weren't included in it, but by the grace of God, He has made it available to everyone, and Paul was appointed to bring the Good News of this gift to the Gentiles. Let's read on.

Ephesians 3:8-12

8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace [privilege] given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in Heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold [infinite] wisdom of God,
11 According to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him.

There are a few things to notice in this sentence. First, remember that the unreachable riches of Christ are those spiritual gifts that Paul talked about in the first two chapters of this letter. Next, in order for you to understand what principalities and powers in heavenly places are, see these Daily Bread Bible Studies:

You see, we know about the mystery of Jesus Christ, which is everlasting life through grace and faith, but wayyyyy back in the beginning, before the Great Flood, Jesus was not known in the flesh yet. So Paul is saying, God has known since the beginning, His plan, to extend His gift (the fellowship of the mystery, or in other words, the sharing of eternal life) to those who have faith in Him. Don't forget, those angels (principalities and powers) were heavenly beings, spiritual, all their needs were met, living to serve God. And they chose evil instead of faith. Now, Jesus has been here, and has revealed the mystery of God, and the complete (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit), wisdom of God to the church, and we, knowing the truth, have the choice of whether we fall like the fallen angels or choose faith in His plan.

Ephesians 3:13-21

13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not [don't be discouraged] at my tribulations for you, which is your glory [it is for your benefit].
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in Heaven and Earth is named,
16 That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory [your spiritual blessings], to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend [understand] with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
20 Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power [the Holy Spirit] that worketh in us,
21 Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
