Biblical Discipline Bible Study Truth
Christian Discipline in the Bible Quest

Another lovely day for more Daily Bread. In our last study, Paul told us about many people who endured trials and tribulations because of their great faith, and the example that they should be in our own Christian walk of faith.

Put on your spiritual thinking cap for a moment and picture all those giants of faith from the last chapter, cheering you on in your Christian walk. Circled around you in their Angel robes with their halos twinkling above their heads and their wings folded tightly on their backs, they are all smiling and talking with one another. Now what do you think they're saying? Just something to keep in the back of your mind because it seems like that is how Paul pictures it. In fact, he is most likely one of them. Let's see what Paul talks about next.

Since we also are encircled with so great a cloud of witnesses (named in the last chapter), let us get rid of everything that slows us down, and the sin which so easily weighs us down, and let us run the race that is set before us with patience, Keeping eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith; who endured the cross, willing to take the shame, all for the joy He would feel to save us, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Think about how Christ endured such opposition of sinners against Himself, so you don't grow weary and weak in your minds. You have not yet withstood trials and temptations unto death, striving against sin like our Jesus did.

Christian Discipline in the Bible Warning

Being our Heavenly Father, God disciplines us. Unless you understand His loving way of doing this, you may mistake His love and discipline for something else. If there is sin in your life, God will intervene. He will warn you first, then if you choose to cease from your sin, the warning will cease as well. If you choose to continue in sin, the degree of discipline that God uses will increase. If you're a parent, you've used this method of discipline yourself, probably hundreds of times. If you're a child, you've experienced gradual intensity of discipline too. If one thing doesn't get your attention, you move up to the next stage of discipline. Here's an example in stages of how a child may be disciplined by an earthly parent, and how an adult may be disciplined by the Lord.

A child disciplined by a parent
  1. A cross look.
  2. The child is sent to their room or "time out" to think about what they've done.
  3. A privilege is taken away.
  4. Grounding.
  5. Undesirable chores or even spanking.
An adult disciplined by the Lord
  1. A feeling of guilt.
  2. Distress, frustration, and/or anxiety (maybe financial hardship or problems at work).
  3. Something important is taken away.
  4. Emotional pain, sadness, fear.
  5. Illness.

Christian Discipline in the Bible and You

Of course these are just examples, and the way that God disciplines you is as individual as you are. The great thing is that God gives us all the choice to stop our sin at any time which stops the discipline. Many times we are in denial of our sin, which keeps us from escaping from continuing discipline. We simply don't want to admit to or let go of our sin. Yes, it's ugly, but it's true. A parent's love is what motivates them to discipline, and the same is true of God. Continuing with Paul:

And you have forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you, his child:

Proverbs 3:11-12

11 My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:
12 For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Allow God to discipline you, it proves His love for you, for what kind of son is one who isn't disciplined? If God doesn't discipline you when you need it, like all fathers do, then you are illegitimate, and not sons. Furthermore we have had mortal fathers which corrected us, and we gave them respect: wouldn't we much rather be in submission to the Father of spirits, and live? For they (our human fathers) truly for a few days chastened us to please themselves; but God disciplines us for our benefit, so we can be partakers of His holiness.

Now no discipline at the time, is enjoyable, but treacherous: nevertheless afterward it builds good character for those who obey.

We've all known unruly children who are not well disciplined, and adults who are not self-disciplined. Can you imagine the chaos that the world would be in if it weren't for our loving Father's discipline?

So lift up your hands that are hanging down and strengthen your weak knees, and walk straight and be strong ... [You've got a race to run, remember?!]

Psalms 34:14

Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, without it no man shall see the Lord: Look after one another so that nobody falls short of the Grace of God; so that the root of bitterness does not cause you to slip, by this many are defiled. Beware of sexual sin, or dishonorable people, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat in a moment of weakness sold his birthright.

Genesis 25:33

And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

For you know how that afterward, when Esau would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: And though he was sad to the point of tears, it was too late. Genesis 27:34-40

This is that "root of bitterness" that Paul was just talking about. (No, he's not talking about bitter roots like turnips or turmeric.) Instead of being truly sorry for what he did, Esau was bitter and consequently the blessing he received made him even more bitter, which is what Paul meant when he said, "and by this many are defiled." The point is, don't resent the discipline of your Father, because you may make things worse.

Christian Discipline in the Bible Concerns

Now Paul compares the discipline from the Old Testament, to the New Testament.

Back in the days of Moses, Mt. Sinai, where the Old Testament originated, was a frightening thing to behold. It burned with fire, enveloped in blackness and tempest. When the voice of God was heard, the children of Israel pleaded not to be spoken to anymore. (Not only for fear of hearing His voice, but also because they didn't want to hear His discipline.) If an animal touched the mountain, it was to be stoned to death or thrust through with a dart. The sight made Moses say, I exceedingly fear and quake. Exodus 20:18-26

But you have come to mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the New Covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things that that of Abel.

Christian Discipline in the Bible Meaning

Now Paul encourages us even more, to listen carefully to God's discipline.

Make sure you don't refuse (like the children of Israel at Mt. Sinai did) to hear Him that speaks.
If they didn't escape when He spoke to them on Earth, we can't possibly escape if we turn away from Him that speaks from Heaven, whose voice shook the earth, but now He has promised, saying:

Haggai 2:6

... Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land ...

And this word, "Yet once more," plainly shows the removing of those things that can be shaken, and those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Things that are shaken, are all earthly, fleshly, worldly things, whereas things that cannot be shaken are spiritual. If your desires can be "shaken" they will be done away with, but your faith, and your obedience to God is unshakable.

So as we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us be grateful that we may serve God in a way that will please Him, with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.
