Doubt in the Bible

What is the Origin Of Doubt and How Can We Overcome Doubt?

Doubt ... It's the opposite of faith, and a very powerful tool that the enemy of your soul uses to try to hold you back and keep you from advancing on your Christian Walk. There is a term for childlike faith, or believing something without a doubt ... Many people call it:

Blind Faith

Jesus described blind faith to "doubting" Thomas:

John 20:24-29

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe.
26 And after eight days again His disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then saith He to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto Him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Without seeing ... Or "blind" faith, is the kind of faith we should strive for in our Christian walk. What exactly does that mean, you might be wondering. Well, not only should your faith in God's Word be with certainty, but the determination to pattern your life after it should also be without any reservation or doubt about what anyone else may think and without any doubts that it is still applicable in the world that we live in today, since modern times are so vastly different in many ways than ancient times.

Why Do People Doubt, When Does Doubt Sprout, Where Do We Look for Answers on How to Not Doubt. Without a Doubt ... Let's contemplate the Doubt Bible verses together for a moment about something Jesus said:

Mark 11:22-24

22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Now, Jesus has had countless faithful followers since His first visit here on Earth, so why then do you suppose that we don't see mountains cast into the sea all the time? Why aren't there innumerable Christians who can claim that absolutely anything they desire ... They get?

Well, let's look into that. What was the very first thing Jesus said you have to do in order to move mountains?

Have faith in God.

Doubt Bible Verses Teachings
Doubt in the Bible Message

Having faith in God. Trust in God. Means that you desire only His will to be done. Dig out your spiritual thinking cap for just a moment if you will. Everybody has a conscience, which is the Holy Spirit working within you, making you aware of obligation to do the right thing. Now, you may desire something very badly;

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

... But if there is even an hint of conscience that it may not be something that is God's will (incidentally, that would be ... doubt) that might be enough to prevent your desire from being granted.

... And shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

If it takes faith as little as a grain of mustard seed to make anything possible ...

Matthew 17:20

If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Doesn't it stand to reason that doubt as little as a grain of mustard seed may make anything impossible? Here comes the tricky part ... You may not even be conscious of your doubt ... But God is.

A little friendly Doubt Bible advice ... Never test God, just to see if He will grant your desires. He's not a genie in a bottle. He wants what is best for you and what will make you truly happy. He knows your heart, and to take advantage of that or to take Him for granted would be most insulting.

Give it to God

Here's another wondrous thing that Jesus offers those who ask Him, but doubt often gets in the way.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Lay your problems on me, He's saying. You've heard us crazy Christians time after time, when anyone has a problem, advise that they Let go and let God. Wow ... That takes a lot of faith, no doubt, to just hand serious problems over to God and believe in your heart, 100%, that He will take care of everything, without your assistance. It takes so much faith in fact that many do not have the patience to wait for God's will to be done, but instead feel the need to intervene. After all, you can't just sit there when a serious situation exists and do nothing but pray ... What would folks think, right?

Have you ever been in that situation? And when you interrupt God's plan because you think your intervention will be more punctual than God's will, do things ever really work out for the best? Why is it so easy to doubt that God thinks that our problems are as urgent as we do? Or that He can, or will take care of things that you feel only you can fix? Next time, try and give Him more faith, and see if the outcome isn't far better than you imagined.

Hear what Jesus is saying ...

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Forget about your troubles and learn about me, seek me, follow me. You're worrying about the wrong things. Put your troubles in my capable hands and discover me, spend your time on me, with me, instead of on such anguish. Don't doubt. I'm about peace and serenity, and your problems will disappear, you will be comforted.

Here again, listen to what Jesus is saying ...

Luke 12:28-31

28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will He clothe you, O ye of little faith?
29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 But rather seek ye the Kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

It's the same message ... Forget about your troubles, don't doubt, seek God, get close to Him and He will take care of everything.

James 4:8

Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Here is a little Doubt Bible advice. Get off the fence. Put your unconditional trust in God. Don't question His ability to do the impossible.

Matthew 19:26

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Doubt Bible Verses Promise
Doubt in the Bible Hope

Doubt is a sinking feeling. Faith will keep you afloat. When you have faith and hope for something, it's an exhilarating feeling. But you know that distinct opposite feeling you have in your soul when doubt is lurking, don't you?

Matthew 14:25-31

25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And He said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

The next time you recognize that doubt has snuck into your heart, don't be afraid to reach your arms out to Jesus and cry, Lord, save me. He will catch you.

Remember that the Lord is gracious and when you realize your doubt and ask forgiveness, He extends mercy to you, and wants you to carry on with even stronger faith. He understands the Spiritual Warfare that is part of this world and He wants you to overcome it.

Thomas and Peter weren't the only Apostles that had episodes of doubt. The others too, who spent three and a half years in the presence of Jesus had doubts from time to time and also needed help with it.

Luke 17:5

And the Apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

There are times when we all question whether our faith is deep enough. That's because we're all in the middle of a battle that we talked about just a moment ago called Spiritual Warfare. What's happening is the devil is trying to win our souls away from God. This isn't a new thing. Way way far back when the Lord told Abraham that he (at 100 years old) and Sarah (at 90 years old) would have a child ... They had their doubts.

Genesis 18:10-15

10 And He said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind Him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13 And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And He said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

Actually, the Lord told Abraham this news 25 years earlier and after 10 years Sarah's impatience caused her to take matters into her own hands. Later on, she was sorry she did. You can read about it in the book of Genesis, beginning at Chapter 16. Just wanted to give you a little insight of how patience plays a big part in faith. When things don't happen as quickly as you'd like, remember that God's perspective of perfect timing, is perfect. Chances are, He's moving things into place to make everything work out right, not just give you a temporary solution to your desire. Don't doubt. Give Him your time and your loyalty. He is worth the wait.

Two-Faced

When you were a child, undoubtedly you remember that an unfaithful friend was referred to as "two-faced." There is a similar term used in the Bible that refers to half-hearted faith ... It's called double minded. Which means doubtful.

James 1:5-8

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Would you like another example of being double minded? If you believe in, and love God, but don't believe He can get certain things done without your help. That is being double minded. If you believe He did all those miracles you read about in the Bible, but miracles couldn't possibly happen in your life. That is double minded too.

Doubt Will Cause You to Pout

Ponder on this Doubt Bible quotes Scripture written by the Apostle Paul for just a moment.

Romans 14:22-23

22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

How does this apply to your life today? Well, it's not only about food. Happy is he that has a clean conscience. If you think you're doing something wrong. It is. Don't be tricked by whispers that say you're innocent because you never saw the rules about something in black and white, but you just had a teeny tiny little microscopic sized hair of a doubt. That's all, just an itsy bitsy bit. Friend, that's enough. That's all it takes. Doubt is convicting. It's the devil's trick. He's waiting to tattle on you to God.

1 Peter 5:8-10

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

Yep, he's clever, and he's trying to trick everyone else too. Be alert. Jesus has made it very clear that we are not to possess doubt and that we are to be passionate about our Faith:

Revelation 3:15-16

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Doubt in the Bible Habits

Break the Habit

Strange as it may seem, the Doubt Bible verses reveals that doubt can become a habit. And like any other habit, it can be broken, or replaced. The weird thing about habits is that most times you do them without even knowing you do. Doubt is one of those. You may be so used to it, that you don't even recognize it.

Obviously, the habit you want to replace doubt with, is increased faith. Challenge yourself to become more aware of doubt in your life. Pray about it. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Write down your goal on a piece of paper and put it where you can see it at least every day. Believe to receive. Jesus made the promise and it can be real in your life. Without a doubt!

1 Timothy 2:8

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

There is a force out there that is attempting to overtake us all; it is Satan. There is another force that is protecting us from him; it is the Holy Spirit. It is a battle for souls. This battle is called Spiritual Warfare, and like it or not, you are right in the middle of it.

How to Prepare for Spiritual Warfare
