BTK Strangler - BTK Capture
February 26, 2005 ...

After over 30 years of searching, the authorities finally captured BTK. The BTK suspect's name is Dennis Rader. He was born on March 09, 1945 making him 59 years old at time of capture. He is 5'-11" tall and weighed about 195 at the time of his arrest. His parents' names are William and Dorothea Rader. He is one of four brothers. He grew up in Wichita Kansas but he moved to park city Kansas. BTK arrested, while living in the same home at 6220 independence, in park city Kansas for about 30 years. He is married and has two children. He was a park city compliance officer dealing with nuisance and animal type of calls.

How Was BTK Caught?

Authorities traced a floppy disc that BTK had recently sent to KSAS-TV to a church that Dennis Rader had used. He was one of few people that had access to the computer. There was a camera in the home depot parking lot which showed Dennis Rader's vehicle circling repeatedly in the parking lot at the same time a package was dropped there from BTK. This was the evidence that put police on Dennis Rader's trail. The police took a tissue sample from Dennis Rader's 26 year old daughter's (Kerri) medical records without her knowledge. It was a close match with the DNA that the police had in the BTK case from semen left behind at the crime scene. The police started watching Dennis Rader and the police arrested Dennis Rader down the road from his house while he was driving. He was arrested without incident and they took DNA samples from him which matched that of BTK. Authorities spent several hours searching his home and removed his computer and several other items. They found a book about infamous criminals, panty hose and jewelry in Dennis Rader's backyard shed. Surviving victims are uncertain if Dennis Rader is BTK because of various methods BTK took to conceal his identity.

Here is a more detailed explanation of the BTK Capture shared by Wikipedia:

Dennis Rader initiated a series of 11 communications to the local media. This activity led directly to his arrest in February 2005. In March 2004, The Wichita Eagle received a letter from someone using the name Bill Thomas Killman. The author of the letter claimed that he had murdered Vicki Wegerle on September 16, 1986, and enclosed photographs of the crime scene and a photocopy of her driver's license, which had been stolen at the time of the crime. Before this, it had not been definitively established that Wegerle was killed by BTK. The DNA collected from under Wegerle's fingernails provided police with previously unknown evidence. They then began DNA testing hundreds of men in an effort to find the serial killer. Altogether, more than 1,300 DNA samples were taken and later destroyed by court order.

In May 2004, television station KAKE in Wichita received a letter with chapter headings for the "BTK Story," fake IDs, and a word puzzle. On June 9, a package was found taped to a stop sign at the corner of First and Kansas roads in Wichita. It had graphic descriptions of the Otero murders and a sketch labeled "The Sexual Thrill Is My Bill." Also enclosed was a chapter list for a proposed book titled The BTK Story, which mimicked a story written in 1999 by Court TV crime writer David Lohr. Chapter One was titled "A Serial Killer Is Born." In July, a package dropped into the return slot at a public library contained more bizarre material, including the claim that he was responsible for the death of 19-year-old Jake Allen in Argonia, Kansas, earlier that month. This claim was false, and the death was ruled a suicide.

How was BTK Caught with a Lie

After the BTK capture, Rader admitted in his interrogation that he had been planning to kill again and he had set a date, October 2004, and was stalking his intended victim. In October 2004, a manila envelope was dropped into a UPS box in Wichita. It had many cards with images of terror and bondage of children pasted on them, a poem threatening the life of lead investigator Lt. Ken Landwehr, and a false autobiography with many details about Rader's life. These details were later released to the public. In December 2004, Wichita police received another package from the BTK killer. This time, the package was found in Wichita's Murdock Park. It had the driver's license of Nancy Fox, which was noted as stolen from the crime scene, as well as a doll that was symbolically bound at the hands and feet, and had a plastic bag tied over its head.

In January 2005, Rader attempted to leave a cereal box in the bed of a pickup truck at a Home Depot in Wichita, but the box was discarded by the truck's owner. It was later retrieved from the trash after Rader asked what had become of it in a later message. Surveillance tape of the parking lot from that date revealed a distant figure driving a black Jeep Cherokee leaving the box in the pickup. In February 2005, more postcards were sent to KAKE, and another cereal box left at a rural location was found to contain another bound doll.

In his letters to police, Rader asked if his writings, if put on a floppy disk, could be traced or not. The police answered his question in a newspaper ad posted in The Wichita Eagle, saying it would be safe to use the disk. On February 16, 2005, Rader sent a purple 1.44-Megabyte Memorex floppy disk to Fox affiliate KSAS-TV in Wichita. Also enclosed were a letter, a gold-colored necklace with a large medallion, and a photocopy of the cover of Rules of Prey, a 1989 novel by John Sandford about a serial killer.

Police found metadata embedded in a deleted Microsoft Word document that was, unknown to Rader, still stored on the floppy disk. The metadata contained the words "Christ Lutheran Church," and the document was marked as last modified by "Dennis". An Internet search determined that a "Dennis Rader" was president of the church council. When investigators drove by Rader's house, a black Jeep Cherokee-the type of vehicle seen in the Home Depot surveillance footage-was parked outside. This was strong circumstantial evidence against Rader, but they needed more direct evidence to detain him.

Police obtained a warrant to test a pap smear taken from Rader's daughter at the Kansas State University medical clinic. DNA tests showed a "familial match" between the pap smear and the sample from Wegerle's fingernails; this indicated that the killer was closely related to Rader's daughter, and combined with the other evidence was enough for police to arrest Rader.

BTK Capture
How was BTK Caught Secret

It is known that Dennis Rader was a suspect back when the murders first occurred, as were many others that the police had on their list of potential suspects. Apparently the authorities could not find any hard evidence to prove that Dennis Rader was in fact BTK, even though he was in the air force stationed in Japan, turkey, south Korea and Greece for four years in the late 60's as a mechanic. One of BTK's first victims, Joseph Otero, was also in the air force as a mechanic. He worked as an assembler for Coleman which is the place two of BTK's victims (Julie Otero and Kathryn Bright) worked. Dennis Rader worked there about three years and left Coleman in July 1973 just one month before Kathryn bright started working at Coleman in august of 1973. He began his killing spree just six months later by killing the Oteros in January of 1974 and the Kathryn bright in April of 1974.

Dennis Rader graduated in 1979 from the Wichita state university with a degree in administration of justice. The authorities had always believed that BTK was associated with the college and had done much investigating on campus. During the time of most of the murders, Dennis Rader worked for ADT which is a home security company from 1974 to 1989 giving him access to people's homes. He became a compliance officer in 1990. One of many word puzzles that BTK sent to KAKE-TV and authorities was sent on May 05, 2004 ... It gives many clues as to his identity and methods.

BTK Capture Details
How was BTK Caught Despite Deception

According to many, Dennis Rader appeared to be an upstanding member of his community. Others say he was very moody and that he was egotistical, overbearing and very "by the book" in his administration as a compliance officer. He was the president of the congregation of Christ Lutheran church and was an usher there. He was also a cub scouts leader, cooking and teaching young boys how to tie all types of knots. The same types he used in his murders.

Needless to say, Dennis Rader's wife (Paula) a devout Christian woman and his two children are devastated. Dennis Rader married Paula Dietz in the early seventies. The son who is 29 years old is under suicide watch due to what he is experiencing. They had no idea that their dad and husband was BTK.

BTK Other Possible Victims

There is new evidence that BTK killed two other women named Dee Davis and marine hedge. One of which lived on the very street that Dennis Rader lived on. These murders occurred in 1985 and 1991. Authorities expect to find more unsolved murders being at the hands of BTK.

An interesting fact is that all of BTK's victims were females except for the Otero husband and son. It is also a fact that the Otero's were sick and BTK probably assumed that Joseph would be at work and the kids would be at school but Joseph had returned home after dropping three of the children at school. Was BTK already inside the house when Joseph returned surprising BTK and causing him to change his plan? Keep in mind that two different females from two different homes worked at the same place that Dennis Rader did. This would suggest that Dennis Rader knew Julie Otero and chose her as the victim from some fascination he had from the workplace instead of BTK knowing Joseph from the air force.

It is also interesting that Kathryn bright started working at Coleman one month after Dennis Rader left. Could she have been Dennis Rader's replacement and this angered him? We know that the murders were sexual by nature due to semen being left at the crime scenes yet he did not actually have sex with any of his victims.

BTK Captured - BTK Arrested

Dennis Rader is being charged with 10 counts of murder and is being held on a 10 million dollar bond. According to an inmate that was in the jail that Dennis Rader was taken to but released shortly after said that, Dennis Rader gave the other prisoners the thumbs up sign as if he were bragging about his deeds. The other inmates did not find him so heroic and in fact cursed him and made threats. He was placed in an isolated cell.

Several independent sources close to the investigation say that Dennis Rader freely spoke with authorities after his capture and even confessed to the 10 murders during his interrogation but has become tight lipped since his court appointed attorney came on the scene. The judge in the case has placed a gag order preventing anyone close to the case from sharing information.

Dennis Rader will probably not get the death penalty because Kansas did not reinstate the death penalty until 1994 which is after the murders. Unless it is found that he murdered others after that date.

There have been plenty of rumors since the BTK Captured and BTK arrested event. For example, it was said that he attempted to escape and that he had cancer. Both have been proven to be untrue. Dennis Rader waived his right to a preliminary hearing which is a hearing to determine if the state has enough evidence to take the case to trial. It was evident that the case was going to trial.

On May 03, 2005 ... Dennis Rader plead not guilty.

Although the trial date is set for June 27, 2005 ... It is unknown when the trial will actually take place as it is certain that the defense will request a change of venue. Since it is said that Dennis Rader admitted to the murders, and now pleads not guilty ... Insanity may be the path he should have chosen and in fact ... It may be that the defense attempts to show that he was being possessed by a "monster" ... Therefore insanity.

BTK Captured the Attention
How was BTK Caught Poem

Dennis Rader was said to have written poems while he awaits trial. Here is one of his poems:

"Black Friday"

"Just a quick glance and I knew all was lost.
I saw in real life...now a on going mind view, the black and white, were now my new boss.
I saw my life as I know quickly fade away.
I saw my love ones, in mind and thoughts that I would never be able to touch, hold, communicate closely with and kiss with care will now be at bay.
I saw the Black Side of me, was now caught and others would not suffer from my lots,
But then it dawn on me, it was not as I thought.
Yes the other in me will cause no suffering.
The living remained, the Mother, Brother, Sisters, Children, Close Friends and wife will suffer.
And the real me of blood, flesh and mind will suffer."

Here is another of the poems:

"Tis' Spring Out There."

"oh, to walk among the new season,
to heard a robin voice,
to see a dandelion bright,
to watch a butterfly flight,
to smell a simple flower bud,
oh spring these are the many reasons."

Note: We left the words spelled incorrectly just as BTK did. The style is the same as well. The number one factor is the suggestion that there is an "other" in him just as BTK said all along.
