  • Your laugh is unique.
  • Your gifts and talents are God-given.
  • Your personality is like no one else.
  • No one else has the exact same footprint shape in the sand.
  • You are a pearl ... A treasure ... Hidden within.
  • No one's shell looks exactly like yours.
  • No one's shell has been in all the same places as you.

No one can reach the people you can the exact same way. Some people can only be reached and helped by you ... Because no one can understand them, except you. You have the experiences to really understand them. To really know how they feel.

God, You know our lives and You know us.
We're an open book to You; even from a distance, you know what we're thinking.
You know when we leave and when we get back; We're never out of Your sight.
You know everything we're going to say before we start the first sentence.
We look behind us and You're there, then up ahead and You're there, too--
Your reassuring presence is always with us.

Psalms 139:1-5

1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

You're Special

  • You're special. In all the world there's nobody like you.
  • Since the beginning of time there has never been another person like you.
  • Nobody has your smile, nobody has your eyes, your nose, your hair, your hands, your voice.
  • You're special. No one can be found who has your handwriting.
  • Nobody anywhere has your tastes for food, clothing, music, or art.
  • No one sees things just as you do.
  • In all of time there's been no one who laughs like you, no one who cries like you, and what makes you cry or laugh will never produce identical laughter and tears from anybody else, ever.
  • You're the only one in all of creation who has your set of abilities.
  • Oh, there will always be somebody who is better at one of the things you're good at, but no one in the universe can reach the quality of your combination of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings. Like a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone, but none can match the symphony sound when all are played together. You're a symphony.
  • Through all of eternity, no one will ever look, walk, talk, think or do like you.
  • You're special ... You're rare.
  • And in all rarity there is great value. Because of your great value you need no attempt to imitate others ... You will accept--yes, celebrate your differences.
  • You're special and you're beginning to realize it's no accident that you're special.
  • You're beginning to see that God made you special for a purpose.
  • He must have a job for you that no one else can do as well as you.
  • Out of billions of applicants, only one is qualified, only one has the right combination of what it takes.
  • That one is you, because ... You're special.

We don't have to put that effort into perfecting ourselves any longer ... But just be who we are.

Remember in our first talk when we talked about how it feels at times like our struggle with self harm has become part of our identity?

I'm a cutter.
I'm a pill popper.
I'm a burner.
I'm a scratcher.
I'm a banger.
I'm an alcoholic.
I'm a purger.
I'm an addict.

Now ... We can have a different view of Self Harm. We are not those things. Not even one of them. We are a treasure in Christ. We are something special.

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Imagine a huge sand dune ... God's precious thoughts about us outweigh the number of grains of sand:
