THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
Welcome! It's a
pleasure to have you back, and today you're in for a real treat. Today's
study is about the day that the Apostles would be introduced to the
comforter that Jesus had told them about. It was called the day of

I've got a little
Daily Bread Crumb to start off with for this study. What does the word
Pentecost mean? Well, in Old English, Middle English, Late Latin and
Greek, it literally means fiftieth day, and that obviously is because
the Holy Spirit
descended upon the Apostles 50 days after Jesus' resurrection. Jesus
ascended into Heaven 40 days after His resurrection and means it was 10 days
after that, when this memorable day happened.
That day, the
disciples (remember there were about 120 of them there) were all united in
one place, with the same cause, to spread the Good News of Jesus as it was a
celebration day in Israel. Suddenly, there was a sound from Heaven like a
strong rushing wind and it filled the whole house where they were gathered.
Then they saw cloven tongues like as of
and it rested upon each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
Remember, John the Baptist told his followers that they were being baptized
with water, but one day they would be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with
There's also a
of this event. In (Leviticus 23:15-18) you'll find that 50 days after the
First Fruits celebration, (Which would represent the Resurrection of Jesus)
there was an offering of
made to the Lord.
Back to the study
... The 120 people gathered in the Upper Room began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. That means the Holy Spirit gave
them the ability to speak in other languages, even though they didn't know
the language. At that time, there were people from every nation under Heaven
living in Jerusalem, and when this unusual thing was made known, the people
came together and were confused because each man heard the disciples speak
in his own language. They were all amazed and they marveled, saying to one
another, Aren't all these people speaking Galileans?
How is it that each of us hears them speak in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites, citizens of Mesopotamia and Judea, Cappadocia,
Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, Libya, strangers of
Rome, Jewish and converts to Judaism, Cretes, Arabians, we all hear them
speak in our languages about the wonderful works of God. And they were all
amazed, and couldn't believe it, saying to each other, What does this mean?

This is a very interesting and controversial topic ... Many believe that speaking
in tongues is something that automatically happens when the Holy Spirit is
within you. However, it is just not TRUTH.
reveals to us that the gifts are given as we NEED them. The gift of speaking
in tongues was given to the Apostles (Acts
2:3-4) because they spoke to large groups of people of different languages and ALL
people of different languages were able to understand this spiritually
universal language (Acts
Now most of us have encountered someone who starts
rambling off a bunch of unknown words and claim that they are speaking in
"Tongues" ... However, in
Paul tells us that it is better to prophecy than to speak in tongues. He
goes on to say that
for one to speak in tongues and not be able to interpret what he is saying
to those he is speaking to, is a form of self edification and of no use.
It does not edify God. He says in
1 Corinthians 14:19 that he would rather speak 5 clear words which all could understand, than
10,000 words which nobody understands.
His point is ... Why
would anyone want to teach others in an unknown language when those that he
is teaching cannot even understand him? This day and age, we are usually
sharing truth, teaching or speaking to another that understands our language
and therefore we do not NEED the gift of Tongues. Perhaps if the
administration called for it, God would give it to you in that hour.
Again ... The Apostle Paul explains it very well in
Corinthians, Chapter 13. Desire Charity ... over gifts. Without
it ... The gifts are as nothing.
Charity is long suffering, always kind, does not envy or uplift self, does
not behave itself unseemly, does not seek it's own gain, not easily
provoked, thinks not on evil, does not rejoice in sin, yet rejoices in the
TRUTH. Bears all things, has hope, endures and never fails

greatest of these is CHARITY

continue with what happened at Pentecost. Other's who were there hearing
them speak so passionately mocked them saying, These people are drunk. (You
can imagine how excited they must have been experiencing the Holy Spirit for
the first time) Well that struck a chord with Peter, so he stood up with the
Apostles and gave a very moving sermon to all the people there. He spoke
strongly to them, saying, You men of Judea,
and all that live in Jerusalem, listen to me and understand. These people
aren't drunk, as you say. It's only 9 a.m. But this is what was spoken by
the prophet Joel (Joel 2:27-32). God said, In the last days I'll pour out of
my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams, and
on my servants and on my handmaidens, in those days, I will pour out my
Spirit and they will prophesy, and I'll show wonders in Heaven above and in
the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. The sun will turn
dark and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord
comes. And it will come to pass, that whoever will call on the name of the
Lord will be saved. You men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth,
a man, proved in the midst of you by miracles and wonders and signs, to be
of God, and by the foreknowledge of God, you've taken, and by wicked hands,
have crucified and slain Him. God has raised Him up, having loosed the pains
of death, because it wasn't possible for Jesus to die.
PENTECOST BIBLE VERSES INFORMATION WITH PENTECOST BIBLE
David spoke about it.
I have set the LORD always before me: because he is
at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my
heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also
shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul
in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to
see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life:
in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand
there are pleasures for evermore.
said, Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you about the patriarch
David. He is both dead and buried and his tomb is with us to this day.
Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had promised him that of
the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, He would raise up Christ to
sit on His throne. David, seeing this before, talked about the resurrection
of Christ, that His soul was not left in hell, neither did His flesh see
death. This Jesus, God has raised up, and we're all witnesses.
God has exalted
Him by His right hand, and having received the promise of the Holy Ghost
from the Father, He has brought forth what you now see and hear. David isn't
ascended into the heavens. He said himself, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at
my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. So let all Israel
know truly, that God has made the same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both
Lord and Christ.
When the people
heard this, they were touched in their hearts, and said to Peter and the
rest of the Apostles, What should we do? Then Peter said to them, Repent,
and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the
remission of sins, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The
promise is for you and your children, and all that are afar off, even as
many as the Lord our God calls.
And with many
other words, Peter testified and taught them, saying, Save yourselves from
this unruly generation. Those who gladly believed him were baptized, and
that same day there were added to them, about 3,000 souls! No wonder Jesus
chose Peter for the rock on which to build His church!
earnestly in the Apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of
bread, and in prayers. And fear touched every soul, and many wonders and
signs were done by the Apostles. All the believers remained together, and
they lived in commonwealth. That means they sold their possessions and
goods, and divided them among everyone as each person needed.
Each day, united
in the Temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate with
gladness and unity, praising God and being accepted with all the people. And
the Lord added to the church daily, those who should be saved.
