Original Sin in the Bible Journey
Glad to have you back again, here at Daily Bread. The last time we
shared, Paul was explaining how by one man, Adam, one sin brought
death to the world, and by one man, Jesus Christ, one act of
righteousness, sacrificing Himself for our sins, brought life to the
world.
Now Paul talks
about sin in general. But Paul, in his Apostolic mind, is one step
ahead of the things that the enemy would have you wonder about sin.
Acts 6:1
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that Grace may abound?
Paul knows that the adversary is gonna try and reason with you and
craftily put questions in your mind, like, Well, if Grace only comes
about because of sin, then without sin, there must be no Grace. So,
if sin increases, wouldn't Grace be more plentiful? Here's Paul's
answer:

Certainly not. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer in
it? Don't you know, that all of us who are baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we're buried with Him
by baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised up from the
dead by the glory of the Father, in the same way, we also should walk
in newness of life. Remember sin is death. So to ask if we should
continue in sin, is like asking if we want to remain dead. For if we
have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be
also in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing that our old self
is crucified with Him, so that the body of sin might be destroyed,
that from now on, we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is
freed from sin.
Now if we are dead with Christ, we believe that we
shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ being raised from the
dead, is dead no more, death has no more dominion over Him. For in
that He died, He died unto sin once, but in that He lives, He lives
unto God. Likewise consider yourselves also to be dead indeed to sin,
but alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Once you accept Christ in your heart, you become much more aware of
your sins. These sins are the tribulations that we as Christians,
need to beware of, and in the last chapter, remember Paul said that
we should rejoice in tribulations. Why would he say that? That sounds
ridiculous, you may be thinking. And, doesn't it sound contradictory
to beware of something and rejoice in it at the same time?
Well, God said that He would bring us through fire. And what do you
think tribulations are? When you look at it from that viewpoint, it's
much easier to understand, isn't it? Tribulations are not gonna go
away. In fact, they're gonna increase the stronger your relationship
becomes with God. Why? Shouldn't they become less?
No, because satan is gonna work even harder to yank you back to his
side. What Paul is saying, isn't that when you become one with
Christ, your life will be sinless or free of temptation. Remember
that Jesus Himself was tempted by the devil for forty days in the
wilderness, and countless other times through evil spirits that He
cast out of people, etc. And, like Jesus, we need to do the righteous
thing when temptation comes a callin' and just say no.

It can be a frustrating thing sometimes, because in our human
condition, we sin. We don't like it, but we do it. That's confusing,
but every one of you know what I mean, and Paul will explain this
strange thing in Chapter 7, but for now, what we need to know is that
our job is to fight when temptation rears it's ugly head. Be alert
and be strong.
Paul writes:
So, don't let sin reign (rule) in your mortal body, that you should
obey sin in the desires of your flesh. And don't surrender your
bodies as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but surrender
yourselves to God, as those that are alive from the dead, and
surrender your bodies as weapons of righteousness for God. For sin
shall not have dominion over you, because you are not under the law,
but under Grace.
This brings to mind what David wrote of sin ...
Psalms 19:12-14
12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from
secret faults.
13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let
them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall
be innocent from the great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my
heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my
redeemer.

What are secret faults? Secret sins. Things that nobody knows about
but you ... But God of course. It may be something you've done, or
do, or think. Maybe it's something that you don't want to stop doing,
or thinking, so you deny to yourself that it's really a sin, because
you don't want it to be, but you know that if it was brought to the
light, you'd find that it really is.
Maybe you think that if it doesn't hurt anyone else, it can't be sin.
Do you have a kind of uneasy feeling about this? That might mean that
you need to have a talk with yourself about secret faults. Don't be
too hard on yourself though.
Even king David had them. Repent, ask for the Grace of God, get up if
you've fallen down, and fight harder. One more thing ... Maybe secret
sins are even secret from us ... Sounds like a good idea to pray
about this like David did, huh?
Now let's get back to Paul's message. You can tell that Paul knows
that the enemy isn't gonna stop with just one question.

What then? shall we sin, because we're not under the law, but under
Grace? Certainly not. Don't you know, that who you submit yourselves
to, you become their servant? Whether it's of sin to serve death, or
of obedience to serve righteousness you belong to whom you obey?
But thank God, that you were once the servants of sin, but now you
have obeyed from the heart, that form of teaching which was given to
you. Then, being made free from sin, you became the servants of
righteousness.
I speak in human terms because of the infirmity (weakness) of your
flesh: because as you had yielded your members servants to
uncleanness and to iniquity to serve iniquity; likewise, now, submit
your bodies as servants to righteousness to serve holiness. For when
you were the servants of sin, you had nothing to do with
righteousness. What fruit (goodness) did you have from those things
which you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death.
But now being made free from sin (having nothing to do with it), and
having become servants to God, you have your fruit to serve holiness,
and the end (the final reward is) everlasting life. For the wages of
sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus
Christ our Lord.

Original Sin in the Bible Danger
No matter how you look at it, sin is a bad way to go. There is no
good thing about it. It's end is death. Grace,
God's free gift to us is the path to take. It will free you from
death and bring you everlasting life. For those who think that
Christianity paints a deceiving picture about the freedom that you
gain from Grace instead of law, you must understand that freedom
demands responsibility, however, that responsibility is love, and
when it is true in your heart, it is effortless.
Freedom is not going around doing whatever you want to do, whenever
you want to do it. That sounds more like an invitation to evil.
Freedom is a clear conscience and that pure feeling of confidence
that eternal life awaits you.
