Dear Future Graduate Student:

Thanks for taking the time to read this brochure. When I was applying to graduate schools, there was a lot of confusion and fear (about not getting in), thus contributing to "walking on eggshells" and living in worry.

First, I want to tell you, do not listen to the professionals, family members or other graduate applicants, when it comes to applying to graduate schools.

Second, Make the graduate school application process a Fun Adventure!

Three, When you have mastered the application process, YOU are IN.

Rule Number One

Begin doing work or volunteer work in your chosen field of endeavor.

When the admission committees and staff begin looking over the applications: YOU MUST STAND OUT from other candidates.

How do you do this?

Begin in undergraduate or post-bachelor level study, to work or volunteer in similar agencies or businesses that mirror the graduate program.

For instance, if you want to become a physician–then volunteer your time in an emergency room or children's hospital.

If you want a Ph.D. in mathematics, you may want to volunteer tutoring community college students.

If you are going into animal or veterinary sciences, an animal shelter or zoo may be the place to work directly or indirectly with animals.

There is a definite pattern in doing VOLUNTEER WORK or paid jobs that relate to the graduate program and future career.

Why?

You will begin networking with real world people that went to graduate school.

These are some of the people that will write you letters of reference and get you in.

Rule Number Two

You don't need all "A" grades to get into Grad School.

Try and maintain a "B" average or above and you can get into many competitive grad school programs.

Take graduate level courses while attending undergrad programs.

If you have not gotten in grad school, consider taking about 3 graduate courses, and you will prove you can do it.

Do not listen to horror stories of those that were rejected.

Rule Number Three

Get letters of reference from professors you like & that know you.

College professors like to talk and interact with their students. After class, chat about the material and your future goals.

Get to know all about the professor(s) and their backgrounds.

You don't have to get an "A" grade in a course to get a good letter of reference.

Just show interest and enthusiasm in taking the course.

Rule Number Four

Don't listen to others when it comes to applying to Grad School.

Parents, friends, relatives and others may not want you to attend graduate school. There is fear of failure, fear of success, jealousy and many other reasons.

Follow your heart in the matter.

Remember, you can always go to graduate school next year or change your goals. Nothing should be written in stone.

Graduate school should be fun, exciting, a challenge and not difficult. YOU can make it difficult. Enjoy the ride; if you get in the right school–it will be fabulous.

Rule Number Five

Do not set time limits on getting the degree.

One of the biggest problems: trying to make the degree program go too fast.

If you are not enjoying the studies and it is all hardship and you feel sick all the time; it may not be the right program or career goal.

It is better to take a year off, and not rush things. Graduate school costs a lot of money and you will become in debt. Why waste money on a program you don't like?

Rule Number Six

Consider part time Grad School.

When I got accepted into a grad program, I was a part-time student and I loved it.

I could take my time, did not feel rushed and got all "A" grades. I was in control; I was king of my castle. I had a job and other things that made me worry less about "failure" and "dropping out"

Many graduate schools accept older working students, "part-time" and you will all be in the same boat.

Rule Number Seven

Have a bunch of different interests.

Besides doing volunteer work and demonstrating interest in your chosen field: consider MANY of your interests.

IF you have not done volunteer work in your chosen field don't worry!

Demonstrate to the admissions committee WHAT YOU HAVE DONE OVER THE YEARS.

If you want to be a counselor for example, stress that you coached little league sports.

If you want to be a teacher, show the admission committee you are good at facilitating a classroom or group. Point out how fun it was to take a CPR class or how you interacted with children at a local zoo.

GRADUATE STUDENTS ARE AVERAGE PEOPLE.

The graduate school admission committees want to know your COMMITMENT to the study and the work you will do in your community.

Rule Number Eight

The Graduate School application process should be fun.

Please remember, you are applying to a program and you want to show them the REAL YOU.

You should be calm and collected.

There is no room for spelling errors and bad grammar.

THEY WANT A RELAXED AND CONFIDENT STUDENT

Show them, what a PROFESSIONAL IS.

If you are not having a good time doing the graduate school application process, YOU may not have a good time attending graduate school.

Rule Number Nine

Have a great back up plan.

A back up plan in the back of your mind gives you leverage. It gives you hope and courage, when the going gets tough.

Don't throw all your dreams away, just because you got rejected from a particular program. Use your brain and resources to find a better program.

Graduate school should be a leisure experience that is educational and enjoyable.

Many students may be doing the program for the wrong reasons, such as, "I want to make a lot of money," or "My parents always wanted me to be an engineer."

One back up plan is the part-time program(s) discussed earlier.

Rule Number Ten

Consider probationary admission(s).

If things are not working out, such as you couldn't get the highest grades in undergrad–since you worked full-time; or you were raising a family:

Consider probationary admissions.

Some grad programs allow an applicant to take several grad courses in the program of their choice before being formally admitted. You can prove yourself in this manner.

Rule Number Eleven

Graduate School is not life or death.

You can now take a deep breath. Graduate school is not hard and is not life or death. Just take it easy and you can get in the program of your choice.

Congratulations!
Be proud of yourself,
You are on your way to Grad School!
