Pondering About Prayer

Prayer is a sincere sign of our faith. When you pray, you are in essence saying, "I love and honor you, my Father," or "I believe, my God, that you can do this for me," or "Thank you for what you, my Lord, have done." Sometimes it's hard to put our prayers into words, and our all knowing Father understands that:

Romans 8:26

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Something to ponder on is that perhaps we ourselves do not know what is best for us, which in turn makes it hard to put our prayer into words, so the Holy Spirit intervenes for us.

Sometimes it may be hard, in our human condition, to wait for what we pray for. At such times, try and remember that our perspective of life, and time, are limited, but God's perspective is eternity, and only He knows what is best for us, and WHEN it is best. Jesus encourages us not to give up hope.

Luke 18:1-5

1 And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:
3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

Always pray that God's will be done:

1 John 5:14

And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us ...

Matthew 6:9-10

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven.

Sometimes what we ask for may not be God's will, but our Father, who can do ANYTHING, may answer your prayer by changing your mind about what you pray for.

James 4:3

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Here is an excerpt from Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible which explains this clearly:

Let us learn hence, in the management of all our worldly affairs, and in our prayers to God for success in them, to see that our ends be right. When men follow their worldly business (suppose them tradesmen or husbandmen), and ask of God prosperity, but do not receive what they ask for, it is because they ask with wrong aims and intentions. They ask God to give them success in their callings or undertakings; not that they may glorify their heavenly Father and do good with what they have, but that they may consume it upon their lusts - that they may be enabled to eat better meat, and drink better drink, and wear better clothes, and so gratify their pride, vanity, and voluptuousness. But, if we thus seek the things of this world, it is just in God to deny them; whereas, if we seek any thing that we may serve God with it, we may expect He will either give us what we seek or give us hearts to be content without it, and give opportunities of serving and glorifying Him some other way. Let us remember this, that when we speed not in our prayers it is because we ask amiss; either we do not ask for right ends or not in a right manner, not with faith or not with fervency: unbelieving and cold desires beg denials; and this we may be sure of, that, when our prayers are rather the language of our lusts than of our graces, they will return empty.

Spend some quality time alone in sincere, fervent, heartfelt, prayer with your Father every day. Contemplate within your heart if you are praying for something that will glorify Him. Don't forget to include praise and thanksgiving in your relationship with Him. When you thank Him for answering your prayers even before they come to pass, you show faith.

And in this very, very difficult time for Israel, please don't forget to pray for the place where God put His name:

1 Kings 9:3

And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

Psalms 122:6

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.

God bless you and may your prayer life abound with faith, hope and love.

Red Beans and Rice Soup
Warning! You're gonna love it!

1 c. dry pinto beans
1 c. (after cooked) brown rice
1 T. bacon grease (or oil)
½ onion diced
½ seeded jalapeno diced
1 celery stalk diced
3 cloves garlic minced
4 c. chicken broth
1 (8oz) can tomato sauce

2½ t. salt
½ t. pepper
½ t. paprika
1 T. parsley flakes
1 t. dried thyme
½ t. oregano
⅛ t. cayenne
1½ t. liquid smoke

  • Rinse beans and cover with water in instant pot. You may add pork of your choice if you like. Cook under pressure for 45 minutes, and let pressure release naturally. (Or you can use canned kidney or pinto beans.)
  • Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Brown onion, bell pepper or jalapeno and celery in bacon grease until translucent, about 10 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add dry ingredients and stir. Add liquid ingredients and stir.
  • Drain beans when done and shred meat if you included it. Mash half the beans in a bowl with a fork or a potato masher and add the beans, meat and mashed beans to the soup.
  • Stir in the rice and simmer for about 15 minutes. If it is too thin, scoop out a few more beans, mash them and add them back in.
  • Great with cornbread.
