Jesus Said Follow Me in the Bible Verse

Follow Me !!!

Jesus invited His Apostles to follow Him by saying the Words ... Follow me. And they did !!!

Have you received an invitation from the Lord that says, Follow me? Your invitation probably did not or won't come when it seems like the perfect time for you. Friend, there will always be something that will try and hinder you from accepting His invitation. You may have other things planned. It may be at a time in your life when you think you should devote your time to something else and you simply couldn't have enough time to serve the Lord as a disciple.

Here is a Jesus said Follow Me Bible secret ... There are millions of things that will convince you that someday it will be the right time, just not now. School, relationships, spouses, children, friends, parents, career, illness, finances, friends, plans ... these are just a few of the reasons, but you could probably put just about any excuse on this list, and it's an excuse that Jesus has heard repeatedly from prospective disciples since He was here on Earth, inviting people in person.

Let us look into this "Follow Me" request in the Bible ...

Follow Me Bible Study Procedure
Jesus Said Follow Me in the Bible Blessing

Think for a moment about who the movers and shakers of Jesus' time turned out to be. They were the ones who dropped everything to follow Him. The Apostles did not give Jesus excuses like, Well, I'll have to discuss this first with my wife, just exactly what I'll be doing for the next three and half years, or, Gosh, uh, my boss will fire me, or, How will I support my family, or, What about my new baby? No, the Apostles didn't give any excuses, but look at what Jesus said to some of those who found reasons not to follow Him:

Matthew 10:32-39

32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in Heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in Heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on Earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Read between the lines in that Follow Me Bible verse quote folks. "He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."

This scripture doesn't only apply to those who in the past have given their very life ... Or in other words ... Died ... For Jesus, but it also pertains to giving up your worldly life for His sake. Career, luxuries, friends, comforts, loved ones ... Whatever is necessary. Jesus said whoever doesn't 'take up his cross' and follow is not worthy. This is a sure fire way of saying that it's not gonna be all peaches and cream people.

Here is a Follow Me Bible study tidbit of truth ... Chances are, if it doesn't include sacrifice of some kind ... Something is probably amiss. Jesus' life was not peaceful, and to be a Christian or Christ-like is to live the way Jesus lived, not only in the comfortable or convenient ways for you, but in the ways that feel like a sword is coming between you and whatever or whoever it is that opposes your decision to follow Christ ... And no matter what or who you have to sacrifice in your life in order to serve Him.

And one more thing to remember, is that if there is something that stands between you and serving your Father, His way ... Do you think He won't remove it from your life anyway in order to bring you to surrender your life to Him?

Let me give you some examples:

Another Follow Me Bible study suggestion ... If you're under-age, of course the best thing to do is to honor your parents ... But that doesn't mean you shouldn't respectfully make your wishes clear to them.

Now, let's just say you're a young person and you feel a calling to devote your life to serving God, but others expect you serve the world ... You know ... Further your education or training in something and be a career person or acquire a trade of some kind. So ...

You spend gobs of money ... And time ... Learning the requirements for the job, only to find that you're never truly fulfilled by it, or that it is not an area that you are gifted in, so you struggle, frustrated most of the time, doing something that a person who is gifted in the same area is happy and does the work with ease, or you're fired, or you have an accident that renders you unable to perform it anymore, or you spend countless years paying back student loans, or the corporation you land a position with shortly goes bankrupt and you end up unemployed, or you don't really even like the vocation you've ended up in anyway ...

Jesus Said Follow Me in the Bible Purpose

Whew, all kinds of things could happen. Good thing you did what everyone else expected of you, huh? At that point, hopefully you'll dig out that invitation Jesus sent you and give it more careful consideration.

Or maybe you're in your 20's or 30's and you've recently married. You have a new home, a fairly good job with a promising future and your first baby is on the way, when you get a calling from the Lord to serve Him. That's not to say that these aren't important things or that God wants you to abandon your wife and child and home, etc., but it doesn't take a very vivid imagination to see that there are plenty of ways that God could get your attention if you refuse or ignore His invitation.

Let's say in this Follow Me Bible study scenario that you're middle aged, and you feel a calling to make a change in your life and God is pointing you toward serving Him. Wow, by this time, you have a family and a mortgage and seven credit cards with outstanding balances. Is there anything that God could prune from your life to make time for serving Him?

What about those of you who are retired ... Or looking forward to it ... With hopes that you'll finally have time to perfect your golf game, or the elderly women who have plans of buying a Winnebago and traveling the country with your husband? Don't for one minute believe that because of your age, the Lord will not call on you, or invite you to change your retirement dreams.

Whoa Nelly!

Jesus said Follow Me Bible verse note: Don't misunderstand. God doesn't take out a personal vendetta against anyone who doesn't respond to His invitation immediately. Though He will remove whatever comes between you and Him, He will not harm others because you fail to respond to Him. He is a loving God, and He understands the hurdles that we as humans living in this ungodly world face each day, and how we've been brainwashed into thinking that the way of the world is the only way.

Our Father will, however, gently guide you into His will, and friend, believe me, the sooner you respond, the more likely you are to see His calling as an invitation instead of a subpoena. If you don't respond to His gentle nudging to follow Him and His will for you, then, He may just increase the intensity of His encouraging. There are also times when tragic things may happen to you, and they're not because you didn't respond to His call, but those times may be a good times to invite yourself to become a disciple.

Here is yet another Follow Me Bible study fact ... Every person, and every situation is different. God may have to use drastic measures for one person, in order to trigger them to respond to His calling, whereas others may not need such harsh action. Only God knows what each of us requires, and don't forget, that everyone is not called at the same time of their lives either, so beware of judging others who may be older than you, but have not received their calling yet.

How Much?

Again, here is a Follow Me Bible study friendly reminder ... Every situation is different and God is the only judge, as to exactly what your 'cross' is. You'll have to consult with Him to find out how much He wants you to sacrifice. What is it exactly that He is calling you to do? What gifts has He bestowed upon you?

If I may, allow me to encourage you not to think of your calling as a cross to bear but a privilege. When we think of the deeds Jesus performed we think of Him as heroic and He said that He would enable us to do even greater things:

John 14:12

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Here is a Jesus said Follow Me Bible trivia ... Does He want you to give up your career? Maybe you have a career that IS part of His will, and does serve Him, and He's calling you to serve Him in additional ways. Is your family opposed to your choice to follow Him? Perhaps your family is who He is calling you to serve. Your home is the most important place in the world to change a life for God. Pray about it. Ask Him. If He tells you differently, then perhaps He's calling you to serve Him somewhere else because:

John 4:44

For Jesus Himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

Perhaps God has someone else in mind to reach those in your own family who just can't believe that you have a calling, and perhaps you've been chosen to reach other lost souls because they, likewise, can't believe one of the Christians in their own family have a calling or a deep spiritual understanding of how to teach them about anything, especially as personal as a relationship with the Lord.

For certain, God doesn't want you to be left destitute and hungry, and sad, because you could hardly serve Him well under those conditions, but major changes in your life may be something you should expect, because when you're prepared for something, it's always easier to deal with it, and that way, your spiritual health will not be hindered in your service to Him.

A New Mentality

When you follow Jesus, you must have a different mindset than the rest of the world. You've been spiritually reborn, and the world doesn't see things spiritually, therefore, Christians are referred to in today's generation as 'freaks.' The things that the world views as normal routine happenings, are not normal to us. Death is one of those things. We see death as God setting us free of the flesh and delivering us to Follow Me to await the final judgment.

Here is a Follow Me Bible study concern ... It's a time of peace and rest, but most people ... Even some Christians who don't fully understand the reality and the spirituality of death, find it a time to grieve and selfishly long for their beloved to be back in the flesh, suffering this life on Earth together with them still.

Jesus summed this all up in nine words:

Matthew 8:19-22

19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto Him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay His head.
21 And another of His disciples said unto Him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Yes, in the Old Testament, you'll find where righteous people did mourn for their dead, even for certain long periods of time, but that was before the Gospel was preached. How many souls can you save, if instead of spending time and energy grieving (for yourself), but spend it preaching the Gospel of life to the lost, who still have a chance?

This next Follow Me Bible verse Scripture is one I'd like for you to pay particular attention to, because most of us do NOT have great possessions, and STILL we find it hard to give up what it takes to be 'perfect' or 'complete' in the the Lord's eyes. Merely dedicate your life to following Him, and don't put other things above Him is really all He asks.

Matthew 19:16-24

16 And, behold, one came and said unto Him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And He said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He saith unto Him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

20 The young man saith unto Him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in Heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
23 Then said Jesus unto His disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.

We find it so easy to follow the wrong path ... The way of the world ... Why is it that we struggle so much to choose to follow Jesus? Why is it that the world has such a difficult time with those who decide following Jesus is their calling?

Another Follow Me Bible study trivia question ... Why are we so influenced by what the world thinks? These are important questions to ask yourself. Who am I going to be answering to in the end? Haven't I learned as a Christian, that everything in this life is temporal, and only the gain from following Jesus is really worth anything?

Jesus tried to tell them, way back when, that it's not the things of this world that matter ... It's the SPIRIT that gives life, and nothing else is worth a thing. This was hard for them to believe too.

John 6:63-66

63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64 But there are some of you that believe not.
For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray Him.
65 And He said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
66 From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him.

Follow Me Bible Study Summary
Jesus Said Follow Me Bible Verse Conclusion

As today's Christians, we have the advantage of hindsight, or history, that insures us that Jesus is the Messiah, so it's not usually a lack of Faith that postpones our acceptance of Jesus' invitation ... It's the requirements that the world has convinced us are more important than Him, that set precedence over our discipleship.

Matthew 4:18-20

18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And He saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him.

Straightway!

Mark 1:19-20

19 And when He had gone a little farther thence, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
20 And straightway He called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after Him.

Straightway!

Luke 5:27-28

27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and He said unto him, Follow me.
28 And he left all, rose up, and followed Him.

Don't hesitate. Jesus is waiting for your R.S.V.P.

There is a force out there that is attempting to overtake us all; it is Satan. There is another force that is protecting us from him; it is the Holy Spirit. It is a battle for souls. This battle is called Spiritual Warfare, and like it or not, you are right in the middle of it.
