Down the Road
Chapter Twenty-Two
Jeff was through; he was furious with
Kaye Leigh for discussing their personal life with Tim, he was
tired of everything. He walked passed everyone and went
straight up to their room, grabbed a suitcase, threw it on the
bed and started throwing clothes in it.
Kaye Leigh was watching him from the
door "Take everything including your kids; you will not be
back here for anything." She told him. "Maybe if you're really
lucky Jeff you can get a room for the kids next to Morgan's."
She started laughing.
"Shut up Kaye Leigh!" he yelled.
"Can't you admit the truth yet Jeff?
You know that you're heading to Morgan's." she said. Jeff shut
his eyes trying to keep his temper under control so he would
not do or say anything he would regret later. He turned,
walked passed her and went downstairs.
"Faith, Dan you need to get upstairs
and pack your things." Jeff said to the kids.
"Are we going somewhere?" Faith
asked.
"Yes and please do it as fast as you
can." He said.
"Are we going too?" Josh asked.
"Not this time buddy, you're staying
with your mom." He said choking up.
"Make sure you get all your things."
Kaye Leigh said coldly from the door. Everyone looked at her.
"Don't take it out on them Kaye
Leigh." Jeff said.
"Don't tell me what to do!" she
snapped and moved away from the door.
"What's going on Jeff?" Curtis asked.
"I'm leaving." He told them.
"You can't leave Jeff!" Becki said.
"Yes Becki I can, I have to before
everything is completely destroyed. Curtis will you keep an
eye on Tim?" he said. He told them everything that had
happened in the stable.
"He's going to be sorry he ever
stayed." Curtis assured Jeff.
Kaye Leigh went into the living room
and flipped on the TV. The kids and Jeff was upstairs packing
their things. Becki and Curtis came in and sat down with her.
"Kaye Leigh..." Becki started.
"Not one word." Kaye Leigh said
firmly. About forty-five minutes later, they came down with
their stuff packed.
"I'll have Curtis and Jon bring the
rest later, I'll let you know where we end up." Jeff said.
"Don't bother I don't want to know
nor do I really care." She said without looking at him.
"Stop it Kaye Leigh the kids don't
deserve this." He said.
"Yeah well my kids didn't deserve
this and neither did I." she replied. "Get out of my sight."
Kaye Leigh turned the volume up so that Jeff would not
continue talking to her.
"We'll help you take your suitcases
out." Curtis said. Jeff looked at Kaye Leigh one last time and
left.
Jon pulled in right after Jeff left.
"Where was Jeff going?" he asked.
"Kaye Leigh kicked him out." Becki
said.
"Really you're kidding." He said
shocked. Kaye Leigh came out onto the porch.
"Hey sis, are you ok?" he asked
hugging her. She broke down and cried on her brothers'
shoulder.
Kaye Leigh made it through the next
two weeks with only being sick in the mornings. She had made
it perfectly clear to everyone after she stopped crying that
no one was to mention Jeff or the kids at all. She had not
taken calls from him, and had not seen him at all. She had
gone in and signed the divorce papers after arguing with Jon,
Curtis, and Becki. She could finally fall asleep without
crying too much before hand. Tonight was the first football
game, she could not wait to see Josh play, but she also knew
she would see Jeff and the kids.
"Are you guys going to the game with
me tonight?" Kaye Leigh asked Becki and Curtis.
"Yep, wouldn't miss it." They
replied.
"Good." She said.
"Do you want me to drive?" Curtis
asked.
"Please." She said laughing.
"Figured as much, I know that's why
you really want me to go. Are we waiting for Josh afterward?"
Curtis said.
"Nope, just pick me up at the high
school." Josh answered.
"We'll be there. I love you Josh."
She told him.
"Love you too mom." He replied
giving her a hug.
"David will be here in a few minutes
so I need to grab the rest of my gear." Josh said.
"Good luck honey." Kaye Leigh said as
he left the room.
"I need to go and get a few chores
done before we leave. I'll be back in a half an hour so be
ready." Curtis said.
Jeff was in his little apartment he
rented, he had not seen or heard from Kaye Leigh since he
left, he had left a couple of messages, but she did not call
him back. He had been served with divorce papers a few days
ago, they were delivered to his office, and he had sat in his
office, prayed, and cried. He missed her and the kids
terribly.
"Are you coming tonight dad?" Dan
asked.
"Of course I wouldn't miss it for the
world." He said.
"When are we going back home? Josh
said mom isn't very happy either." Dan said.
"I don't know son, I'm hoping that it
will be soon." He said.
"Me too I really miss mom and the
others." Dan said.
"Get your uniform and I will run you
up to the high school." He said. He had not heard from Jon, or
Curtis either but they were Kaye Leigh's brother and foreman
so he was not surprised.
Curtis was in the stable feeding
horses when Tim came in.
"Tim did you finish up that list I
gave you?" he asked.
"Just finished it." Tim replied
bitterly. Curtis laughed.
"Problem with the work you're given
to do?" he said.
"Not at all Curtis." Tim said looking
at him.
"Glad to hear it because I have some
things I want done by the time I get back from the football
game." He said smiling and handing Tim a list.
"You're kidding right?" Tim asked
looking over the list.
"Not at all, if it's too much for you
Tim you can always quit." He said.
"That's not going to happen Curtis so
you might as well accept it. You never know someday I might be
your boss." Tim said.
Curtis laughed.
"You think so huh?" he said. "You
know I can take this to Kaye Leigh." Tim told him.
"You can run to her if you need a
woman's protection, but as much as I love the boss it won't
stop, there is only one way you can stop your torment." Curtis
said still laughing. "Oh and you might want to get the idea
out of your head about being the boss some day because it
would never happen. Now if you'll excuse me I have a game to
get to with Kaye Leigh." He left the stable laughing.
When Jeff had dropped Dan off at the
high school Josh had seen him and came over to the truck.
"Hi dad!" Josh said excitedly.
"Hi kid." He said getting out of the
truck and pulling Josh into a big hug. "I miss you guys so
much."
"We miss you too, mom does too if she
wasn't so stubborn." Josh said. Jeff laughed.
"Yes, she can be stubborn at times."
He agreed.
"Are you coming tonight?" Josh asked.
"Of course, is your mom?" He asked.
"She will be there, so try to talk
some sense into her ok?" Josh said.
"I'll see what I can do." He said
smiling.
"We've got to go dad, we'll see you
there." Josh said giving him another hug.
Curtis was waiting in the truck for
the girls; Kaye Leigh had to run back upstairs for something
she forgot.
"About time." Curtis said smiling.
"We don't want to be too early
anyway." She replied. "Grace is at some friends so it's just
the three of us."
"Awesome, I've got a date with two
beautiful women." Curtis said laughing. Becki shook her head.
It took a little over an hour to get to the game, that was the
only thing Kaye Leigh did not like about away games, the
drive.
Jeff pulled into the parking lot and
immediately saw Kaye Leigh's truck, he stomach tightened at
the thought of seeing her. Faith was with Grace and some
friends so he was alone tonight.
Kaye Leigh found them a spot and set
up the chairs, and then she and Becki sat down.
"Jeff will be here tonight." Becki
said casually.
"I don't care." She replied.
"You don't have to pretend with me."
Becki said.
"I'm not pretending." She said.
"Ok." Becki said shaking her head in
disbelief.
Jeff seen Kaye Leigh and Becki,
seeing her made him miss her even more. He walked over to
where they were.
"Curtis, Becki, Kaye Leigh hi." He
said.
"Hi Jeff." Becki said getting up to
hug him.
"Hey Jeff." Curtis said shaking his
hand. Kaye Leigh did not say a word or look at him. "How are
you doing?" Curtis said.
"Ok." He replied shrugging.
Jon came over. "Hey guys." Jon said
bending down to give Kaye Leigh a hug. "How are you sis?" he
asked.
"Great, couldn't be better." She
replied. Becki rolled her eyes.
"How are you?" she asked Jon.
"Good." He replied.
"You all alone tonight Jeff?" Jon
asked.
"Yep, Faith is staying with friends."
He replied.
"You should have brought Morgan; she
would have enjoyed watching your son playing." Kaye Leigh
said.
"Kaye Leigh stop it." Becki said.
Jeff shut his eyes and prayed that he could keep his temper.
The teams were coming out onto the field, everyone stood for
the national anthem. When it was over Kaye Leigh started to
walk around the field so she could see Josh and Dan.
"She's such a charming girl." Jon
said laughing.
"Charming isn't a word I would have
used right now." Jeff said smiling. "How is she doing Becki?"
"Ok, she sick in the mornings
sometimes, I hear her crying at night, but she refuses to talk
about you or the situation." She said.
"Has Tim been staying away from her?"
he asked Curtis. Curtis laughed.
"He hasn't really had a choice
lately; the boy has been extremely busy. He does not have a
lot of free time anymore, although he did say he was going to
talk to Kaye Leigh, I told him to go ahead. I said as much as
I love Kaye Leigh she won't stop it either the only way is to
quit." Curtis said. Jon and Jeff laughed.
"Keep up the good work." Jeff said.
Jeff headed off in the direction Kaye
Leigh went. She was watching Josh; he had just thrown a pass
to Dan, Dan caught it and ran. She started clapping and
yelling. "Way to go guys!" Jeff was watching her and laughing.
"Hey Kaye Leigh." He said coming up
next to her. She did not look at him or say anything.
"Can't you at least say hi please?"
he asked quietly.
"Hi." She replied without looking at
him.
"Kaye Leigh why can't we talk?" he
asked.
"There's nothing to talk about Jeff."
She said.
"There's a lot to talk about." He
replied.
"Did you get the divorce papers?" she
asked.
"Yes." He said sighing.
"Sign them as soon as possible, and
then the whole thing will be all over." She said and walked
away. He just watched her go, he wanted to shake her, he
wanted to kiss her, and she was driving him crazy.
