Biblical Scapegoat Bible Verse Explained
What is a Scapegoat in the Bible Quest
When Jesus came to John the Baptist, to be baptized, John said:
John 1:29
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Jesus was to be baptized of John, but John did not want to at first:
Matthew 3:13-15
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to
be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad Him, saying, I have need to be baptized
of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him,
Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all
righteousness. Then he suffered Him.
What did Jesus mean when He said fulfil all righteousness? Jesus was
referring to an event known as the Day of Atonement:
Leviticus 16:9-10
9 And Aaron [Levite priest] shall bring the goat upon
which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.
10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the
scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an
atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the
wilderness.
Leviticus 16:21-22
21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the
live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of
Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them
upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a
fit man into the wilderness:
22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities
unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the
wilderness.

What is a Scapegoat in the Bible For
The word Scapegoat in Biblical terms was a goat that was selected by
the Lord (by casting lots) to atone for the peoples' sins and was
sent into the wilderness. The word "Scapegoat" has come to mean a
person who was innocent but blamed and punished for the sins, crimes.
Ever been used as someone's Scapegoat? Most have. Have you ever
chosen to be someone's Scapegoat? Most would not.
Jesus did choose to be the Scapegoat for our sins:
John 10:17
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I
might take it again.
So, Jesus was telling John that they had to fulfil all righteousness
by keeping with the day of Atonement ritual. This day of Atonement
ritual was a merely a shadow of a very important event come.
Hebrews 10:1
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very
image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they
offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
So, if this event is a shadow of an event in the future, what event
is it the shadow of? Just as John had stated:
John 1:29
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of
the world.

What is a Scapegoat in the Bible Purpose
Jesus was now the Scapegoat for the sins of the people and was to be
sent into the wilderness ... The 40 day temptation of Jesus in the
wilderness just after His Baptism by John. Most know about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness by the enemy of
our soul ... Satan:
Matthew 4:1-2
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be
tempted of the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty
nights, He was afterward an hungred.
During the temptation of Jesus by Satan, Jesus rebuked Satan for one
of the temptations by sharing Truth.
Matthew 4:3-4
3 And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If thou be
the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But He [Jesus] answered and said, It
is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Jesus was quoting Scripture:
Deuteronomy 8:3
And He [God] humbled thee [Israelites], and suffered thee to
hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did
thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not
live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the
mouth of the Lord doth man live.

God humbled the Israelites ... What does it mean to be humble?
Jesus shared a parable of humility versus pride. Check this out:
Luke 18:10-14
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a
Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust,
adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I
possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up
so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying,
God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified
rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Let's look at what occurred next:
Luke 18:15-17
15 And they brought unto Him also infants, that He would
touch them: but when His disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
16 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not:
for of such is the Kingdom of God.
17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the
Kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
We must choose to humble ourselves as a child.
Matthew 18:4
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the
same is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is
humility.

What is a Scapegoat in the Bible Danger
So, Why are we to be humble? Is humility not a path to honor? And if
we ever get too haughty, What we deem as trials and tribulation are
in fact the fruits of God trying to humble us so He can honor us
later.
Jesus endured trials and tribulation and was humbled for our sake. He
chose to become a Scapegoat for the sins of all and that includes you
and I. He did so because He Loves us so very much.
So, the next time you are in the wilderness experiencing temptations,
trials and tribulations thereby testing your Faith, just remember
what Jesus did when He was enduring His wilderness temptations ...
Tell yourself the Truth of the Power of the Word of God.
Important Note: Many feel that because satan is the enemy of
our souls that we can go around mocking and cursing him.
However ... The Bible is clear on this matter:
2 Peter 2:10-11
10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust
of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they,
selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
11 Whereas Angels, which are greater in power and
might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.
The wording of these scriptures does not reflect the resistance of
mankind against human government ... But rather mankind speaking
against supernatural powers and authority. This is proven when it
says Angels fear to bring accusation against these "dignities"
...

The Book of Jude further explains:
Jude 1:8-9
8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh,
despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the
devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against
him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Even Archangels know it is the Lord's Power which sends Satan
packing. So, resist the enemy of your soul by submitting yourself to
God and he will bail:
James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will
flee from you.
What is a Scapegoat in the Bible? It is one with humility to erase the sins of pride. Overcome the enemy by becoming and remaining humble and allowing God to judge all matters in your life and for Him to take vengeance as He sees fit.
Romans 12:21
Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Jesus overcame Satan by use of humility by becoming a Scapegoat for our sins;
Proverbs 15:33
The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.
We should choose the same path:
2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves,
and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal
their land.
