Sojourn With Luz Leigh

Advice / Information for Newborn

Written by Luz Leigh - 21 April 2009

With the approaching birth of my newest grandchild, I began to think of all the things I want to share with her. I want her to know early in life about Jesus, our gentle Savior who himself loved children. She will learn of Him because her parents are Christians who regularly attend a house of worship. His love is exemplified through many in our family as we practice our Christian faith. In my spare time I made for her a padded cloth book that depicts the Ten Commandments. Until she is old enough to read it for herself, her parents or big sister can read it to her ... then she can snuggle it to her as a small pillow.

Today is San Jacinto Day, important to us in the State of Texas because some brave souls fought and won our independence from Mexico ... thus establishing the Republic of Texas. That was in 1836 when General Sam Houston, with his 910 men, took the more than 1200-man Mexican army by surprise and after an eighteen minute skirmish, won the battle. This is only a small part of our Texas heritage that my young granddaughter will learn of, either from me or in school.

Just as her cousin Patsy did as a small child, I want this one to sit in my lap as I sew garments for her or other family members. One day she will be able to operate the sewing machine that has served us so well. She will learn patience as she struggles with the tasks that go along with sewing. One must clean and oil the sewing machine on a regular basis. There is a certain way to thread the needle or there will be problems. But when she completes that first project, she will know it was worth it.

Family genealogy. Oh, I can't wait for her to be old enough to accompany me as I trudge through cemeteries seeking out data from headstones. Then making trips to dusty rooms in courthouses, finding valuable information from records stored there. She will learn about her ancestors and those of others who she knows. Her mind will be filled with stories of how our ancestors came from Alabama in a covered wagon; how her great-great-grandfather served in the Confederate Army; was wounded but survived to return home and rear a large family. She will learn about the military service of other members of the family. It is my desire for her to be pleased with the way our family has been willing to serve, not just in the military, but law enforcement, fire service, politics and medical field.

When she is old enough, I will read Bible stories to her. Then turn to stories I have written and share thoughts I have placed on the printed page. The yard swing will be a haven for us to escape the real world and dream of things to come and relive things of the past.

Hurry, little one, I can hardly wait to begin our journey together.

"Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them and pray ... Jesus said 'Suffer little children and forbid them not, to come unto me; for of such is the kingdom of God.'" Matt 19:13-14 KJV

"People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, ... He said 'Let the little children come to me; and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'" Mark 10:13-14 NIV
