Christmas Thoughts - Christmas Cards

Written by Luz Leigh - 12 December 2006

Let us continue with thoughts about Christmas. I keep the Christmas cards I receive each year; sometimes the shelf in the closet becomes crowded with several years' collection and I must give up some of them. The memories I share today are from cards friends and family honored me with last year.

Here's the bright red one with a picture of a small baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes, with the words "small baby," while on the inside are simply the words "... great love." What more needs to be said? It's from Cousin L.J. & Margie.

My friend and Bible study classmate, Mary Evelyn, sent one with Mr. and Mrs. Snowman on the front, laden with gifts and candy canes. Inside are the words "There's not a bow big enough to wrap this gift of Christmas love just for you! MERRY CHRISTMAS!" She then penned the words "Peace, love, joy!"

Aahh, here is a very traditional one (hard to find these anymore). The manger scene with Mary holding the baby Jesus and Joseph standing beside her. Both have looks of adoration on their faces. Baby Jesus seems to be smiling. There is a sheep and a donkey, quietly taking in the happenings. The words "Jesus Is Born" are printed above the scene. Inside are the following words: "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS. Matthew 2:21 KJV Rejoice in His great love as we celebrate the Name above all names. Christmas Blessings." Signed by Marvin & Evelyn.

Do any of you receive a Christmas card from a cat? For about 10 years, I have. You see, I have a very precious cat boarded out with some friends (that is a story in itself that I will share with you one day). A lamb and a lion are shown lying in a grassy field with the Christmas star shining above. The message reads "May the special gifts of health, peace, joy and happiness be yours throughout the year." My friend Betty signed her husband Red's name and my cat's name, Princess. Enclosed was a photograph of Princess.

With a sprig of holly and the word "Christmas" dominating the card, these words brought greetings "Christmas is a time for reflecting on the blessings of GOD'S love - a time for thankfulness and prayer ... a time to be happy in the joy He has given us through the birth of His son Jesus Christ." Inside " ... behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. Luke 2:10." Printed below the words "May the peace and joy of Christmas be with you always," my daughter had written "We love you, Mother!" She had signed the names of her husband and two children, as well as hers. Such a simple card, but oh, what a message of Love, both from my heavenly Father and my children.

Because my birthday is so near Christmas, I also receive birthday greetings, many with a Christmas tone. One special card came from a young man I met over the Internet. "Sending You a Birthday Prayer at Christmas time. Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations." Psalm 90:1 KJV

Inside these words were printed: "Praying that God will bless you and give a very Happy Birthday." In his familiar penmanship my friend had written this greeting: "Not sure if I sent a card like this to you last year or not. But it is the thought behind it. So in the God given year 19?? on a cold morning on the day Dec. 24th a baby was born. This child had to be a blessing to her mother, just if for no other reason that it was a gift from God on Christmas Eve. Have many more B-days and enjoy life, for it is short. Happy Birthday, Sara. Love from your Alabama friend Roger aka "Saroki." Now wasn't it sweet that he took the time to write a message?

With that I shall put the cards away for a while, but we will return to them at a later time for more memories.
