Coat Hanger

Written by Luz Leigh - 17 January 2008

The young lady seemed perplexed, confused, in need of assistance. I would say the young blonde, but that would be profiling and profiling is politically incorrect these days. She was standing by her car, coat hanger in hand, trying to push it into the groove between the glass and the side of the driver's door to unlock the door. I noticed there was shattered glass on the ground near the back door and the window had been broken out. This is odd, I thought to myself. Why doesn't she just reach in and open the door through the broken window? This was an older model car that I was sure did not have the new locking devise that would prevent the doors from being unlocked except by the control on the driver's door. Seeing that she was making little progress trying to unlock the front door with the coat hanger, I ventured the question to her.

"Ugh, excuse me, ma'am, but seeing as how the back window has been broken out, why don't you just reach in there and open the door?" Rolling her eyes, she said ... "I don't want in the back seat. I want my purse from the front seat." Well, duh. No comment.

Does this incident not remind us of ourselves at times? We get so focused on ONE thing that we do not see any way to attain our goal but by the limited manner our earthly mind sets forth.

Before I walked away from the young woman, I just had to ask. "Where did you get the coat hanger?" Looking at me with those big blue eyes, innocent as a little child, she said "In the back seat of the car. I always carry one just in case I need to get in there." Wow. What logic.

But then think on this. We have the "key" that will unlock the door, that being God's Holy Word. But how many times do we "shatter a window" to get to a "coat hanger" that might help us when all we need to do is open the door that would give us access to all that we need? I know that was a long sentence, but could think how to break it down.

The coat hanger is when we depend on others to explain His Word to us when we could discern for ourselves. I'm not saying we should not listen to the Lord's ministers and those who teach His Word; just that we could use the key ourselves to receive what He has for us to hear and feel. So each day, take the Key and unlock the door to His teachings.
