Discernment

Written by Luz Leigh - 17 July 2009

We hear much being said about "discernment" and the "gift of discernment." What exactly does that mean? Short definition could be insight or perception. The Apostle Paul wrote in first Corinthians, "Now we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might KNOW (my emphasis) the things that are freely given to us of God." This gift of discernment is in spiritual things.

I once heard the story of a man who had a huge collection of books in his home taking up much wall space on a wooden bookcase in his study. A friend dropped in one day and asked to borrow a certain book. When the man pulled the requested book from the shelf, it crumpled in his hands. You see it had been eaten away by termites. He and his friend examined other volumes, only to find the same thing. Even the book shelf had not escaped damage. After much careful examination, the man discovered tiny clay trails leading from the wall to the bookshelf, almost invisible.

When we begin discerning spiritual things it can be almost as hard as seeing a termite trail. The "wall" might look solid, but spiritually it can be but a shell. Sometimes nothing of substance is found there. Things of a spiritual nature may sound right, but will they stand up when tested against the Holy Scriptures?

Looking past the "book cover" to the heart of the person with whom we are dealing, we must discern what is true and what is not proved to be Truth. We can not do it alone; our gift of discernment in spiritual matters comes from the Father. Pray for that discernment to be poured out on you as you seek to glorify Him with everything you do in His name.
