Sojourn With Luz Leigh

Free From What?

Written by Luz Leigh - 19 January 2008

Our homework this week for Sunday morning Bible study was to answer this question: "What are we set free from?" The focal scripture was John 8:32. We have heard it many times; seen it posted in courthouses, even quoted it ourselves. "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

Let us consider this verse. Who wrote the gospel in which it is found and whom was he quoting? John, the beloved disciple, inspired by the Holy Spirit, wrote this Gospel. He was quoting Jesus. It is my belief that in the four Gospels, only John wrote these words.

What? This is sort of a climax, at that particular setting, on Jesus' teaching of His being the light of the world; that His Father had sent Him; that He (Jesus) does nothing on His own, but that He speaks what His Father taught Him.

Where? Jesus was in the temple court in Jerusalem speaking to the people who had begun to follow Him everywhere He went. The Pharisees were in the crowd, ready to challenge Him on things He was teaching. Of course, His disciples were there as well.

When? This probably took place in the year 29 AD in October. Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Feast of the Tabernacles.

Why? Jesus wanted all to know He had pre-existed even Abraham, whom the Jews viewed as their hallowed ancestor "father." Guided by His Father, Jesus wanted to proclaim His mission to the world ... salvation ... freedom from the Law under which the Jewish people had struggled for centuries.

How? Jesus taught the people in the manner that was His custom ... sitting among them, speaking in terms they should have been able to understand ... using parables to help.

"Then you will know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH will set you free." (my emphasis). Jesus is the Truth. The Jewish people had been watching for centuries for a Messiah who would set them free. Many were looking to be set free from the Roman government under which they were living. Most were looking for a Messiah who would change their lives in a physical manner, not necessarily a spiritual Messiah. Therefore, many missed out on the greatest Blessing God ever sent to earth ... His perfect Son to become the perfect sacrifice for all mankind, for all eternity.

When I take the test during Bible study, I hope some of what I have shared will be asked for. If not, at least I had a good review of this familiar scripture verse.
