Sojourn With Luz Leigh

Gift of a Book

Written by Luz Leigh - 25 September 2009

Recently I received an invitation to a baby shower; in fact, within a couple weeks' time three invitations arrived for three different moms-to-be. But the one I want to tell you about today was different from any I had ever received before and it impressed me. If you have received or heard of this type invitation, remember I am out of the loop as far as babies are concerned.

The card was one that had been created by one of the hostesses, had pink ribbons attached and even a little pink pig; not sure the significance of that, except that the parents live on a ranch near me. The card gave all the pertinent information ... for whom, where, when, etc. But what impressed me was the little card attached that read:

"Although cards are nice,
they're read once or twice,
maybe three or four times at the best.
A book is a treasure, forever and forever
So instead of a card, to be put aside,
Please give Baby Breckyn
A book with your name inside.
It will be read to our little
Cowgirl, before bed each night
And we will thank you,
Forever and forever!"

Because of my great love of books, this pleased me much. So I rushed out and purchased a book for that little one who will soon become a part of their family. The daddy is a young man whom I watched grow up and become an upstanding citizen in our community. The mother is new to me, but she must be a fine lady to have requested a book for her baby.

Maybe someone who reads this will pass this suggestion along to other young parents. Books can be a window to the world. Many nights when my youngest granddaughter is awake in the middle of the night, one can find her daddy kicked back in his recliner, his baby snuggled to his chest, reading a book to her. This pleases me much, because you see, she is only four months old but already she is learning to listen to his voice and hear words that one day will have full meaning to her.

Read to your children, no matter how young they are.
