Mowing on Thursday

Written by Luz Leigh - 24 January 2008

This morning was a cold day. Not bone-chillin' like yesterday when there was rain, but cold enough to make one want to stay inside. But today is Thursday and that means MOW day. No, I would not be mowing the grass; I would be delivering Meals On Wheels, thus MOW.

Thank goodness, I do not have to prepare the meals; just deliver them. My partner in crime, hmmm, I mean partner in delivering, arrived at City Hall where we pick up the prepared meals. I thought she was going to Alaska from the way she was dressed ... gloves, long coat, sweat pants & shirt ... but NO hat. I on the other hand was wearing my blue denim hat and jacket, jeans, red Jesus Club tee-shirt and sneakers, with socks, of course.

We loaded the coolers (or hotters?) which contained the hot meals and cold milk and apple juice into the trunk of my car. Off we went. Our clients seems genuinely glad to see us; maybe not for the food, but for our presence. One little lady is always dressed as if she were going out; I love her because she always has on a hat. Next stop is at the apartment of Mr. No Legs. Well, that's not exactly right ... he has legs ... he keeps them sitting (or standing ?) right by the front door. Today because of the cold temperature outside, he allowed us to take a shortcut out his backdoor to the next client.

Recently one client there in the apartment project gave us some crocheted doilies. Today one lady gave me a navy blue hat like the black one I wear a lot. One gentleman gave us his Halloween candy each week until he finally ran out. But I suppose our favorite there is the little lady who used to hug us each day and tell us to be sweet and be kind to others. Unfortunately, her mind has been claimed by dementia and she hardly recognizes us. I miss those hugs.

Why am I writing all this? I just want you folks to know that any little kindness you show toward your fellowman will be recompensed. Maybe not with a gift here on earth, but our Father is watching and He knows each time we share our heart with someone. There is a commercial that says, "Reach out and touch someone." That is what I try to do each Tuesday and Thursday as I MOW and through my typed words ... words that I hope will bring a smile to someone; encouragement to another.
