Rain

Written by Luz Leigh - 06 October 2007

Did you ever think of the way people perceive and acknowledge rain?

Today was a mixture of rain, sunshine, rain. Sometime during the night, I was awakened by the sound of thunder rolling through. Not the loud, sharp cracks of lightning striking, but the slow gentle rumble, alerting us to approaching rain.

We need rain. During June and July we were blessed with lots of rain here in Texas, but in the area where I live, the rain gauges did not register much moisture in August and September. There are cracks in the blackland gumbo that makes up my backyard. I try to tie a rope on any small children that venture out there so we can retrieve them should they fall in. Well, I guess it isn't QUITE that bad, but there are cracks, to be sure.

Upon arising today, I could tell we had received a little light rain during the night. The skies were overcast, and the temperature was in the seventies, so it was a pleasant morning. We got a light shower about mid-morning and then the sun made its way out. That made for steamy weather.

Over in the afternoon, without warning, except for some dark clouds, the rain was back. The big drops made a soothing sound on the metal roof, reminding me that not only was my yard getting a drink, but the pastures would be soaking up the rain as well. Almost as quickly as it started, it stopped.

But, do not fret. I now hear the ominous sounds of thunder in the distance, there are black clouds overhead and again the temperature has dropped to below eighty. With a little luck and a big blessing from the Lord, we shall have more rain.

How did different people feel about the rain? Well, the promoters of a large outdoor affair, a money-making event in a neighboring town, were not happy to see the rain. First, it would dampen or even WET the merchandise in the various vendors' booths. Second, it would reduce the number of people who would venture out and participate in this once a year event.

The ranchers would be jumping in jubilation, thankful for the much needed rain on their pastures, hayfields and ponds. The folks who had just recently put out fertilizer on their pastures or yards were most happy to see this blessing.

Then we have the wedding party that had planned an outdoor affair for several dozen guests. The paper streamers, the folding chairs, the carpeted "aisle" on which the bride's heirloom gown was to have gracefully trailed along ... all soaked. The bride and her mother are in tears ... the wedding day ruined by RAIN. The father of the bride is smiling to himself, "I told them I'd pay them to elope."

A good rain was just what was needed on the oat patch the deer hunters had planted this morning. The light rain last night put just enough moisture into the ground to make for easy disking. The afternoon rain will make the seed sprout and grow.

Two little boys are happily splashing in the water in the ditch by their house, while their dad is frowning. Not about their playing in the water, but as he thinks about his freshly washed car which he must now drive down an unpaved road to take the boys for a visit with their granny.

So, we see various reactions to the rain ... happy, unhappy. But, everyone can't be pleased all the time. Let's just accept the blessing of rain and be thankful it wasn't a flood this time.
