Saints

Written by Luz Leigh - 02 June 2008

The following words were written by Bro. Schuyler Peterson, senior pastor Fort Johnson Baptist Church, Charleston, South Carolina and published in Life Way. The article was entitled "Sunshine Saints."

A little girl once heard that all Christians were saints. On one occasion, she was taken to an old cathedral. She watched the sunshine cascade through the stained-glass windows.

She asked her mother, "Who are these people on the window?"

"They are saints," replied the mother.

Then the child said, "Now I know what saints are. They are people who let the light shine through."

Those who have trusted in Christ are meant to let the light shine through, for all believers in Jesus Christ are saints.

Have you ever noticed how the windows of some saints do not appear to allow the Light to come through as brightly as others? The Light is there, but we sometimes allow dust to obstruct it. "Dust" being things of this world that we allow to gather in our lives. Maybe it is our job that we feel is so important. Sure, jobs are important if we put them in perspective. The Lord expects us to work and be productive, but not at the expense of His kingdom. Six days are we to labor, but He expects us to give one day to Him.

Other "dust" may be our family. Again, the Lord expects us to love our families and provide for them, but we must keep Him first in our lives.

Did you ever know people whose recreation is the dust in their lives? Baseball, golf, fishing, boating, biking. You name it. These are all worthy activities, but only if they come after your worship of the Lord.

Reading, watching television, working on the computer. Wow! Have I begun to step on some toes! There is nothing wrong with any of these forms of relaxation as long as it is in its proper place. Personally I have found that the computer can be used to allow the Light to shine through. Many of you who read my writings do so through the media of the Internet, so all computer activities are not all bad, but we must not let it take the place of the Lord in our lives. We still must follow His directions to meet together to worship Him and fellowship with other Christians. In Hebrews 10:25 He gives specific instructions regarding this matter. "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another---and all the more as you see the Day approaching." NIV

People who have never trusted Christ as Savior are still walking in darkness so it behooves us to wipe the "dust" from our windows and allow the Light to shine through. Some who have not trusted, and even some who claim to be Christians, have a "distorted, twisted, unreal picture of Him." The way we live and what we say should be a clear view of the Lord shining through our "saintly" window.

So I challenge you (and me) to begin today to be "Sunshine Saints" for the Lord.
