Sojourn With Luz Leigh

Sandra, The Twenty Questions Lady

Written by Luz Leigh - 06 April 2009

The phone rang around noon. The caller ID indicated it was from her dear friend's home. This was not the usual time for the two of them to talk, so her heart skipped a beat when she heard the voice on the other end of the telephone line. "Leigh, this is Bill." Bill never called her; only Sandra called, so she knew before she heard the words that her good friend had left this earth for her heavenly home. Sure enough, after Bill inquired how she was doing, he spoke the words she had been expecting for several days. "Sandra is gone. She died peacefully this morning. She was in no pain."

Now what do you say to the spouse of a dear friend who has just lost his wife of many years to death. She stammered for words of comfort for him, but all she could think of was "I will never hear Sandra's sweet voice again." She did the best she could and after a short conversation, the call ended.

She sat weeping over the loss of this dear friend; selfishly weeping because now after such a long time, Sandra is free from pain. She is sitting at the feet of her Lord, asking questions. For years she carried the nickname of "20 questions" because of her custom of asking many questions of people when she first met them. It was her way of learning about them so she could better understand them; so she could better minister to them.

The two women had met in a Christian chat room. They were not of the same religious faith; Sandra had lost her only son to a murder's bullet; she still had all of her children; Sandra had been afflicted with heart disease and later another illness that could not be corrected because of the heart problem, the required surgery was out of the question; she had almost perfect health, having conquered cancer some six years ago. Sandra could, and loved to, dance; she had never learned to dance; Sandra had a loving husband who was with her during her last hours; she was a widow. But one thing bonded them like sisters. Their love of the Lord.

Today was the appointed day for a memorial service for Sandra in her beloved church there in northern Louisiana. Many times her thoughts have turned to the dear friend ... how they began their friendship there at the Oasis, the chat room, talking first on the open screen, later having private conversations in the "PM" rooms. After a long time, when they felt comfortable in sharing more about themselves with each other, they exchanged E-mail addresses. Thus began the weekly E-mail messages. Then the day finally came when they exchanged telephone numbers and were able to hear the other's voice. Sandra's voice was a sort of raspy voice, with inflections of northern Louisiana accent. Hers had the twangy East Texas accent.

No matter how the voices sounded, alike or different, they knew they would be good friends for a long time. Except, their "long time" did not last as long as they had hoped. Sandra's health began to deteriorate a few months ago, cutting short their phone calls because as Sandra became weaker and weaker she was no longer able to talk more than a few minutes. Sandra never lost her sense of humor, nor her compassion for her fellowman. In the last conversation the two of them had, Sandra expressed concern about a mutual friend and asked Leigh to convey to him that he was always in her prayers.Andrew was the first person to whom Leigh passed the word of Sandra's death. That day in one of the Forums on the Oasis, he posted a tribute to Sandra.

Leigh will never hear the song "Blue Bayou" without having mixed emotions. Sadness because Sandra is gone, but happiness when remembering the times, late at night, when Sandra and Andrew would "sing" the words in chat because this was a favorite song of theirs. Almost as if to remind her of the happy times, Leigh heard "Blue Bayou" on the radio the very day Sandra had crossed over, on angel wings, to Paradise.

Had Leigh been at the memorial service today, she could have placed the long stemmed yellow rose on the altar table near the urn that held Sandra's ashes and said a final goodbye.
