The Letter From Anne

Written by Luz Leigh - 30 January 2010

In searching for a lost folder, I came upon a handwritten letter from a dear friend. When she retired from her job at a Houston bank, she left behind the computer. She still has a pretty handwriting, so I thoroughly enjoy her frequent letters. I have not a clue as to why I kept this letter, except by accident, so it could surface today. The weather outside is cold, raw and windy. Not fit for man or beast to be out there. After re-reading Anne's letter, my spirits have been lifted. It was a three-page letter, but the second page is missing. But from those two remaining pages, I can hear Anne's voice speaking to me through the written pages.

In our childhood and teenage years, Anne and I were best friends. Her family moved away and we grew apart, but during the past several years we have renewed our friendship.

In her letter Anne tells about watching the hummingbirds that come to their feeder. "Our hummingbird feeder attracted one little hummingbird and he started guarding it. Then, along came another and the first little guy said 'no way'. He chases everyone else off. He's such a tiny little thing. We don't have many hummingbirds down here, it seems." See what one of God's tiny creatures can do? Brings joy to this lady who now can hardly leave her home because of a debilitating illness. Does she whine and complain about his condition? No, she sits by the window watching for the birds that frequent her yard; she enjoys the flowers and trees that her husband tends. Never complains, just gives the Lord praise for allowing her those pleasures.

Anne writes her letters in spurts. This letter was begun on a Saturday night, but was not finished until the following Tuesday night. When she was winding down the letter, she said during the afternoon they had been enjoying some cooler temperatures while she watched some yellow butterflies flying around in the backyard and three little hummingbirds continuing their fights for a place at the feeder. She tells me it is now 3:40 a.m. and she needs to get herself to bed and try to sleep.

Know something? Anne, without intending to do so, has once again reminded me of how blessed I am. I have good health, can take care of myself, wander outside when the mood strikes, and sleep normal hours. I am so thankful for the Lord's blessings on me.

As the psalmist says, "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Psalm 106:1 I thank the Lord daily for his goodness.
