True Grace

Written by Luz Leigh - 26 September 2009

Once again I would like to share words from my devotional booklet, Open Windows. This little booklet is furnished by my church and for which I am grateful. The reading for today is entitled "True Grace" with the scripture reference 1 Peter 5:10:14. Peter is writing to the Jewish Christians who have been driven out of Jerusalem and who were scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Ausia, and Bithynia. The letter is sent by his trusted friend and co-worker, Silvanus. Verse 12 says "I am sending this note to you through the courtesy of Silvanus who is, in my opinion, a very faithful brother. I hope I have encouraged you by this letter for I have given you a true statement of the way God blesses. What I have told you here should help you to stand firmly in his love." Living Bible, paraphrased In the King James Version, Peter refers to "the true grace of God wherein ye stand."

Now quoting from Open Windows, Perhaps you've asked the question, "What is this?" when you discovered leftovers in the fridge. Or you've come to a long line of traffic stopped for no apparent reason and asked, "What is this?"

In Verse 12 Peter writes that "this is the true grace of God." We are compelled to ask the same question. What is "this?" What is "true grace?" Why is it so important?

Grace is the free gift of salvation to a people who have earned only judgment and punishment. Grace forms the foundation of our relationship with God. We can't begin to consider entering His presence aside from grace. And by grace we can withstand whatever comes against us. End quote.

The word "grace" is mentioned nearly 200 times throughout the Bible beginning with the verse in Genesis that states "Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord" and ending with the benediction the Apostle Paul wrote in Revelation 22. In Ephesians 2:8 we find that wonderful promise ... "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith---and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." NIV

Apostle Paul pleaded three times for his "thorn in the flesh" to be removed, but the Father said to him, "My grace is sufficient for you, for by my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

Isn't it wonderful that we Christians experience that grace? It brings us peace and joy ... true grace.
