What is a Wife?

Written by Luz Leigh - 20 February 2008

Recently I was in a room with about ten or twelve other women, discussing what it meant to be a virtuous woman and how we can achieve that status. Just what is the definition of virtuous? According to my thesaurus, righteous, worthy, good, honorable, moral, upright and honest are some of the words that define the description of a virtuous woman.

The central theme of the discussion was on how we were to conduct ourselves as wives. Many suggestions came forth. Be kind to others; respect your husband; allow the husband to be the spiritual leader in the family (great idea if it works). When I tossed in my two cents worth, it was to say we wives or single women, for that matter, need to be good in business affairs.

At that point the leader of the discussion asked me to elaborate on my statement. Oh, what an opportunity! I tried to be humble with my answer, remembering that many of the women in the room had not even LIVED as long as I was married. Over the years I have finally learned that I personally have very little to say that is worthy, but I find great knowledge and strength from the Word of the Lord. Thus, I shared things that are given to us in that beautiful passage where King Lemuel was giving the description of a wife of noble character.

In Proverbs 31 we are told how the virtuous wife in that passage purchased a field, planted a vineyard in it and reaped the profits. In so doing she was able to help her husband better provide for their family. She worked vigorously with her strong arms to perform the needed tasks. That wife saw to it that her trading or business affairs were profitable.

In this present time, not many wives can or would purchase a field, plant a vineyard, work it with our hands and make a profit. Times have changed, but values and expectations have not. There are still "vineyards" out there for us to cultivate and from which we can reap a profit.

When speaking of business affairs, that can be as simple as balancing the checkbook, making sure there is not more money going out than is coming in. Using credit cards wisely, if used at all. Learning to invest, even a small amount, of the family earnings in an interest bearing account at your local bank. But, the first and foremost "investment" we are to make is the tithe we return to God each time money or goods are placed in our hands. A wise and prudent point to remember is this: A person can never out give God. It is amazing how we struggle, trying to make ends meet when we keep to ourselves God's tithe. Give it to Him and He will see that the remaining ninety percent will be just what one needs.

I love verse 21 where it speaks of the woman having no fear for her household when it snows, for she has already prepared clothing for them. Although it doesn't say it, I am sure she also has ample food in the pantry with which to feed them. These are attributes of a good "business" woman; seeing to the needs of her family.

At the end of the meeting, I was thankful for having been asked to share my limited knowledge on a subject that is dear to my heart. It would mean much to me if I could attain those qualities set forth in Proverbs 31.
