Down the Road
Chapter Twenty
"What's going on Kaye Leigh? You're
hiding something." Becki said when they got out to the stable.
Kaye Leigh looked around to make sure they were alone.
"I think I'm pregnant." She said
tears starting to fall.
"That's wonderful I know you wanted
to have a baby with Jeff." Becki said.
"A few months ago this would have
been wonderful, now I don't even know if I'm going to have a
husband tomorrow. I can't do this alone again Becki." She
said. Becki gave her a hug.
"You'll be fine Kaye Leigh, remember
God only gives you what you can handle." Becki said.
Kaye Leigh wiped at her eyes.
"Hey boss." Tim said coming into the
stable.
"Good morning Tim." She said.
"Want to go out with me and check on
some horses?" he asked.
"Not today, Curtis and Jeff will go
with you later." She replied.
"Ok thanks boss." Tim said nodding to
her and Becki. They decided to walk around the property.
They were just getting back as the
kids were pulling in, they had spent the day walking and
talking.
"Hi guys." She said hugging them as
they got out of the car.
"Mom." They all yelled.
"Did you guys have fun?" Jeff asked
from the porch.
"We had a blast, are you ok mom?"
Josh asked.
"I'm fine honey." She replied. "Get
all your wet things and put them in the laundry room, I will
get them going in a few minutes."
"I'll do it." Grace said.
"Thanks, but I will get it." She
said. "I better go start dinner."
"I'll make dinner tonight." Jeff said
getting up.
"We'll help." Curtis and Jon said.
"You two sit out here and relax."
Jeff said. He went over to give Kaye Leigh a kiss, but she
turned her head and he ended up kissing her cheek. "Kaye Leigh
please." He whispered.
After they were, alone Kaye Leigh
asked
"How are things with you and
Curtis?" Becki looked at her and replied.
"Things are fine." Kaye Leigh was
crying again.
"Would being pregnant really be so
bad?" Becki asked.
"I don't know Becki, I feel funny in
the mornings, today was worse than usual, I cry all the time.
I know that I'm pregnant, I just haven't gone to the doctor to
confirm it." She said.
"When are you going to tell Jeff?"
Becki asked.
"I have no idea, but it will be a
great nine months won't it, nauseated, crying, and
hysterical." Kaye Leigh said laughing.
Jeff was watching Kaye Leigh through
the window, he did not know what to do to reach her, but he
could feel her slowly slipping away.
"Don't worry Jeff you two will be
fine." Jon said breaking into his thoughts.
"I hope you're right." He replied
going back to cooking. When everything was ready, they called
everyone to the dinner table.
Becki and Kaye Leigh sat down, Kaye
Leigh was not sure if she was going to make it through dinner,
the nausea was back stronger than before. Everyone took each
others hands and bowed their heads. Kaye Leigh kept her head
up and her eyes open.
When Jeff finished she said, "Excuse
me." Getting up she ran into the bathroom.
"Is she ok?" Curtis asked.
"I'll go check on her." Jeff said.
He went to the bathroom door and
knocked, he heard a soft "come in". When he opened the door,
she was lying on the floor.
"Are you ok Kaye Leigh?" he asked
kneeling by her. "Was my cooking that bad?" Kaye Leigh laughed
a little. She sat up quickly again.
Jeff had gotten a cold was clothe and
held it out to her when she was finished.
"Thanks." She said lying on the floor
again.
"You're welcome." He said brushing
some hair out of her face. "Are you ok now?"
"I think I'll live, I'm just going to
lay here for a few minutes." She replied. "You can go ahead
and eat, I'm fine really."
"Call me if you need me." He said
kissing her head.
He went back into the dinning room
and sat down.
"Is she ok?" Jon asked.
"She's sick." He said.
"Well that's something new, I've
never known someone to have such bad cooking that a person
throws up just looking at it." Jon said. Everyone laughed.
"That's what I asked her." Jeff said
smiling.
"I'm going out onto the porch." They
heard Kaye Leigh say from the kitchen.
She went out and sat down on the
swing, leaned back and shut her eyes.
"Here Kaye Leigh I brought you some
tea." Jeff said. She opened her eyes.
"Thank you Jeff." She said taking the
glass.
"Do you want anything else?" he
asked.
"No I'm fine thanks though." She
said. He went back inside and Kaye Leigh could feel the tears
coming again. She wanted to tell him that she was carrying
their baby and celebrate with him, but she could not.
"Boss they left you out here all
alone huh?" Tim said coming around the front of the house.
"No everyone else is eating dinner,
I'm not hungry." She replied smiling. Tim sat down next to
her.
"You should really eat something; you
can't afford to lose weight." He said smiling at her.
"You can't afford to be away from
your job Tim." Jeff said standing in the doorway.
"I was just leaving." Tim said.
"Later boss."
"Have a good night Tim." Kaye Leigh
said.
"Why were you so rude to him Jeff?"
she asked when Jeff sat down.
"I wasn't rude; if he doesn't work he
doesn't get paid its simple." He replied.
"Jeff stop it." She said. "He's just
trying to be nice to people."
"He's got an agenda where you're
concerned Kaye Leigh, and it's my right to protect you." He
said.
"If he's interested in anyone Jeff
it's Becki." She said. "
Ok fine, I don't like him hanging
around you." He said.
"You do realize Jeff that when our
divorce is final I can date other people." She said. Jeff
looked at her.
"Go ahead Kaye Leigh date Tim, sleep
with him its what you want." He snapped getting up.
"What do you mean it's what I want?
What I want is my husband to be faithful to me, however he
wasn't, but until our divorce is final I will be faithful to
you." She said angrily. Jeff looked at her, turned, and left.
Kaye Leigh watched him go, and then
went inside and upstairs. She was tired of crying and
fighting. She drew herself a hot bath, put some scented
bubbles in, undressed, and lowered herself into the hot soapy
water. She leaned back, relaxed a little, and shut her eyes.
Why had God allowed this to happen, especially if He would
give her only what she could handle, because she did not feel
like she was handling the situation that well. The water had
relaxed her enough that she fell asleep.
"Kaye Leigh honey." Jeff said. Kaye
Leigh could hear someone but her eyes were too heavy to open.
"Kaye Leigh." He said again this time gently shaking her. She
jumped, startled, splashing water all over Jeff and the floor.
"What?" she said looking around. "Oh
sorry, I must have fallen asleep." Jeff laughed.
I see that." He said as he dried off
his face. "You've been in there a while." He said.
"No wonder I'm cold." She said
shivering. Jeff pulled the plug and helped her out of the tub.
She wrapped a towel around herself
and said, "I'll be out in a few minutes." When he left, she
shut the door, dried off, got dress, and put her hair up in a
ponytail. When she opened the door, Jeff was sitting in the
window seat looking outside.
"Come sit with me Kaye Leigh." He
said holding out his hand. Kaye Leigh took it; she was tired
of fighting and just wanted him to hold her.
She sat down in front of him and
leaned against him.
"I'm sorry Jeff, I shouldn't have
said what I did, please forgive me." She told him.
"I shouldn't have said what I said
either. I know that you aren't interested in anyone else." He
said kissing the back of her head. "Kaye Leigh when were you
planning on telling me that you're pregnant?"
"Who said that?" she asked quickly.
He laughed.
"No one had to say anything Kaye
Leigh, I'm a doctor remember, I've been watching you closely
lately." He said hugging her tightly.
Kaye Leigh was crying again.
"I haven't been to the doctor yet but
I've known for a while now." She said.
"Would it really be terrible to have
our baby?" he asked. She gave a sad laugh.
"No it would be wonderful Jeff, but I
always pictured us still together after it comes." She said.
His arms tightened around her. She wiped away the tears
impatiently.
"We will be together forever Kaye
Leigh." He said. "I love you so much."
There was a knock on their door.
"Come in." Kaye Leigh said.
"We just wanted to say good night."
Josh said.
"Are you ok?" Dan asked looking at
her.
"I'm fine really guys." She said
giving them each a hug and a kiss.
"Good night guys, love you." She
said.
"Love you too." The kids said
together.
"See you in the morning." Jeff said.
After the kids left, Kaye Leigh got
into bed while Jeff turned the lights off. When he got into
bed, he leaned over her and kissed her.
"Is it ok if I stay here tonight?" he
asked.
"I love you Jeff." She said as she
pulled him closer and kissed him again.
"I love you too Kaye Leigh I always
will." He replied
Friday and Saturday were spent
relaxing and doing laundry. When Kaye Leigh woke up Sunday
morning, Jeff was getting ready for church.
"Are you coming to church?" he asked.
Kaye Leigh was fighting the nausea that was gripping her. When
she moved, it sent her running for the bathroom. "I guess not,
I'm sorry you're so sick honey." He said.
"It's ok." She said when she could.
"Want me to stay home?" he asked.
"No you go ahead and go to lunch with
Jon and Miranda. I will be fine." She said brushing her teeth.
They went downstairs together,
everyone was in the dinning room, and Becki had made
breakfast. They were all ready for church. Jeff poured her a
glass of tea and she sat down for a little while at the table,
until it got to be too much for her, then she headed out to
the swing.
"Still not feeling well?" Curtis
asked.
"Nope, she pregnant." Jeff said. "She
needs to see a doctor, but she says she is." Jeff was
smiling.
"Mom's having a baby?" Faith asked.
"Yes." He said.
"Cool!" Josh yelled.
"A girl." Faith and Grace said.
"A boy." Dan added. Everyone laughed.
"Let's just pray mom and the baby,
whatever it is are healthy." Jeff said.
