The New Covenant
To begin to share with you the story of Jesus, we must first
understand why God gave His Son as a sacrifice for mankind's
sins. The purpose of this most compassionate act of unconditional
Love was to establish a New Covenant with mankind who had some
horrible choices and violated the Old Covenant. God chose to upgrade
the Covenant between He and mankind. But, He could not without an
unimaginable cost.
That being shared ... Let us begin the New Covenant Bible verse study
by asking ... What is a "Covenant?" A Covenant is an agreement
between two parties which both agree not to violate. In this Jesus
New Covenant Bible case, the agreement was between God and His Chosen
people (Israel). The Old Covenant was based on law and was given to
the people by God, through Moses. The Old Testament is based on this
Old Covenant and the New Testament represents the New Covenant based
on God's Grace.
Our Heavenly Father told us in the Bible that we will know
that He is God because He tells us things that will happen before
they occur. He is the God of prophecy.
Isaiah 46:9-11
9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and
there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient
times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall
stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that
executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I
will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
The Bible also says that God reveals His plan to the prophets and
these prophets share it with His chosen people.
Amos 3:7
Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but He revealeth His secret unto
His servants the prophets.
2 Peter 1:21
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but Holy
men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Revelation 19:10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou
do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the
testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the
spirit of prophecy.
This brings up a question to mind and heart as we sojourn along in
our Jesus New Covenant Bible voyage ... Did our Father prophesy,
through His servants the prophets, of the upcoming of this New
Covenant?
The answer is ... Absolutely!
He did so throughout the various and plenteous Jesus New Covenant Bible Scripture and in particular
in the New Covenant Bible verse message as a whole ... After looking
at what His earthly children had done for nearly 2000 years, God made
this statement ...
Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make
a New Covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of
Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with
their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them
out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake,
although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make
with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will
put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and
will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour,
and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all
know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the
Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their
sin no more.
Zechariah 11:10-14
10 And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder,
that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the
people.
11 And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the
flock that waited upon me knew that it was the Word of the Lord.
12 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my
price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty
pieces of silver.
13 And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a
goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty
pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the
Lord.
14 Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I
might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
In the New Covenant Bible verse, God tells us that He will break His
Old Covenant (Old Testament) and even prophesied the timing that the
Old Covenant would end and the New Covenant would begin. He said that
at the time of the change of the Covenants the Jewish people would
consider His worth as ... 30 pieces of silver. (The amount the Jewish
Religious leaders paid Judas to betray Jesus)
God prophesied through these two prophets, hundreds of years before
the Jesus New Covenant Bible promise happened. God knew the people
would trade Him up and even told the exact amount that they would
trade Him up for. The Truth that He had accomplished His New Covenant
is confirmed in the New Covenant Bible verse below:
Hebrews 8:6-8
6 But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by
how much also He [Jesus] is the Mediator of a better covenant,
which was established upon better promises.
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless,
then should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, He saith, Behold, the days
come, saith the Lord, when I will make a New Covenant with the
house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
God said that He looked down on Earth and He could not find one soul
that had done good. No, not one.
Psalms 14:2-3
2 The Lord looked down from Heaven upon the children of
men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become
filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
(Did you know that Psalm 14 and Psalm 53 say
virtually the same words? Just a little interesting fact for you.)
Sooooooo, God saw that His children were all doomed to Hell. In order
to save His children, He had to establish a New Blood Covenant worthy
of cleansing the sins of the people ... To be able to activate this
Jesus New Covenant Bible gift, God knew that He would have to
sacrifice His own Son and chose to do so to save His lost children.
Therefore, we have the New Covenant Bible verse prophecy as a witness.
You see ... In the days of Moses, the blood of animals was sprinkled
on the people to establish the Old Covenant. (Kind of like a blood
pact between friends) Now, in the New Covenant, it is the Blood of
Jesus that established the New Covenant.
Leviticus 17:11
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you
upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the
blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Let's take a short Jesus New Covenant Bible study field trip. Think of it
this way ... The Old Covenant is kinda like a bride who married a man
and obeyed out of fear and obligation, but lacked a foundation of
Love ... The Marriage failed just as many marriages on earth do now
for the same reasons. The result is Divorce ... A marriage based on
fear and obligation is as nothing compared to one based on Love. The
marriages with a foundation of Love can overcome all trials and
tribulations the world will throw at em. It is eternal.
In this renewed marriage Covenant (the New Covenant Bible Verse Vow)
... It is different in that the bride would choose to obey their
husband because they loved Him. The foundation is to be based on Love
and Faith
because of what He has done for them. He sacrificed His life so that
those that He loved might live. This marriage will prove to be worthy
and eternal. They will make it through the trials and tribulations
that the world will throw at them because ... They Love and believe
in Him. That brings us to today with the choice of Faith and Love ...
Is not our Father awesome?
Hebrews 8:6
But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also
He [Jesus] is the mediator of a better covenant, which was
established upon better promises.
Hebrews 9:14-16
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through
the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your
conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 And for this cause He is the mediator of the New
Testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the
transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are
called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity
be the death of the testator.
Hebrews 12:24-25
24 And to Jesus the mediator of the New Covenant,
and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that
of Abel.
25 See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh. For if they
escaped not who refused Him that spake on earth, much more shall not
we escape, if we turn away from Him that speaketh from Heaven:
This brings us to the method that our loving Father chose to bring
this Jesus New Covenant into existence. Prepare the way for the New
Covenant. This is the New Covenant Bible story of the conception of
John the Baptist. The fiery prophet that came to prepare the way for
Jesus who brings in the New Covenant Bible verse promise very soon
thereafter.
Luke 1:1-25
In the days, just prior to the birth of Jesus, when Herod was the
king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias. His wife's name
was Elisabeth. They were godly people, walking in the laws of the
Lord. They prayed to have children but Elisabeth was barren and they
were both elderly, the time of life for bearing a child had come and
gone.
One day Zacharias was burning incense in the Lord's Temple, and the
congregation was praying outside according to their customs, when an
Angel of the Lord came to Zacharias. When he saw the Angel, he was
scared, but the Angel said to him, Don't be afraid Zacharias. Your
prayer has been heard. Elisabeth will bear you a son and you will
name him John.
Many people will rejoice about his birth. He'll be special in the
Lord's eyes and he won't drink wine or strong drink. He'll be filled
with the Holy Ghost from the time he's conceived. He'll turn many of
the children of Israel to the Lord their God. And God will lead him
with the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the heart's of fathers to
their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous.
He'll prepare people for the coming of the Lord.
Zacharias doubted out loud, How can this be true? I'm an old man, and
my wife, she's old too. (In the book of Genesis, Abraham and Sarah
had the same thing happen and in that case, it was Sarah that doubted
... Sarah has a son.)
The Angel said, I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God and I
was sent to tell you all this, but because you doubted, you won't be
able to speak until the day that this comes true because you didn't
believe my Words. These things will come true in their own time.
The people outside were surprised that Zacharias was taking so long
inside the Temple and when he came out, he couldn't speak to them.
They thought that he had a vision because he gestured to them but
kept silent.
When the days of Zacharias' service were finished, he went to his own
house and soon after, Elisabeth conceived and hid herself five
months. She said, The Lord has been kind to me and has taken away my
shame of being childless.
It is important to remember as we travel into the Jesus New Covenant
Bible passages that the conception of John the Baptist was of man and
woman. Now this conception that we will look into is quite a bit
different. It is the conception of Jesus. The purpose of this birth
is to bring in the New Covenant Bible verse miracle.
Matthew, Chapter 1
Luke 1:26-80; 3:23-38
The beginning of Matthew 1:1-17
tells the genealogy of Jesus Christ if you would like to study it.
Matthew's account of Jesus lineage goes back to Abraham. Luke gives
his account going all the way back to Adam in Luke 3:23-38.
These men share with us the bloodline of Jesus. Most people today
don't know their great great grandfather's name, so you can
understand that the record we have in the Bible is very precious.
It's kinda like looking up Jesus' family tree.
Looking back through Jesus' bloodline, several prophecies are
fulfilled by His birth. He was of the seed of Abraham (Genesis 12:3),
the seed of Isaac (Genesis 17:19),
and the seed of Jacob (Numbers 24:17).
He was also from the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10),
and heir to the throne of David (Isaiah 9:6-7; 2 Samuel 7:12-16).
Our Jesus New Covenant Bible study journey shares with us that in Biblical times, an Israelite family and its descendants were referred to as a tribe, and sometimes a house. In the city of Nazareth in Galilee there was a man named Joseph from the house of David and the tribe of Judah who was engaged to a woman named Mary.
Mary was related to Elisabeth. This makes John the Baptist and Jesus
... Cousins. They were born six months apart. So when Elisabeth was
in her sixth month of pregnancy, with John the Baptist ... The Angel
Gabriel was sent to Mary and he said, Rejoice, you who are very
special. The Lord is with you. You are blessed among women.
When Mary saw him she was confused about what this meant. Gabriel
said, Don't be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God and you
shall conceive and bear a son and will name Him Jesus. He will be
great, and will be called the Son of the Highest and the Lord God
will give Him the throne of His father David. He will reign over the
house of Jacob for ever and His Kingdom will have no end.
Mary said to the Angel, How can this be, seeing I have never been
with a man? And the Angel said to her, The Holy Ghost will come upon
you and the power of the Highest will overshadow you. That holy thing
which will be born of you will be called the Son of God.
Elisabeth has also conceived a son in her old age and this is
the sixth month with her, who was barren. For with God nothing shall
be impossible. And Mary said, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it
happen to me as you have said. And with that, the Angel left.
Now, when Joseph was told by Mary the story of the Angel visit and
that she was pregnant with God's child, as you can imagine, it was a
bit much to swallow for him. However, being a righteous man, he
didn't want to cause a scandal, so he thought it was wise to keep
Mary hidden away secretly. But while he thought about it, the Angel
of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of
David, don't be afraid to take Mary for your wife.
She has conceived a son of the Holy Ghost. She'll give birth to a son
and you will name Him Jesus (Savior), because He'll save His people
from their sins. All this was done, so that it would be fulfilled,
which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet (Isaiah
7:14), saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall
bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is, God with us. Joseph woke up and did what the
Angel told him and took Mary to be his wife.
Mary went to visit Elisabeth after Gabriel's visit. When Elisabeth
heard the greeting of Mary, the baby inside her leaped in her womb
and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. Happily she said,
Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
How did it come about that the mother of my Lord should come and
visit me? As soon as the voice of your greeting touched my ears, the
baby inside me leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed are you for
believing, because the things that the Lord told you will come true.
Mary said to Elisabeth, My soul praises the Lord and my spirit
rejoices in God my Savior. He has considered my modest life. From
this time forward, all generations will call me blessed. He that is
mighty has done great things to me and holy is His name. His mercy is
on them that fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm, He has confused the proud in the
imagination of their hearts. He taken the mighty down from their
thrones and lifted up those who are lowly. He has filled the hungry
with good things, and the rich, He has sent away empty. He has helped
His servant Israel in remembrance of His mercy as He spoke to our
fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
Mary stayed with Elisabeth for about three months and then returned
to her own house. When it was time for Elisabeth to deliver, she gave
birth to a son. Her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had
mercy on her by allowing her to give birth at such a late age and
they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day, when they were fulfilling
the Jewish customs for a newborn son, the men there named the child
Zacharias after his Dad.
But, because Zacharias still could not speak, Elisabeth said, No,
he'll be called John. And they said to her, But there isn't anyone in
your family with the name of John. They made signs to Zacaharias
asking what he wanted to name the child. Zacharias asked for a
writing table and wrote, His name is John. Immediately Zacharias
could speak again and he praised God.
Tell me that this Jesus New Covenant Bible study story isn't completely
exhilarating. The neighbors were all afraid then and people gossiped
about it throughout all the hill country of Judea. Everyone who heard
rumors about it wondered what kind of child this would turn out to
be. And the hand of the Lord was with the child.
Zacharias prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord
God of Israel. He has visited and saved His people. He has sent a
messenger of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as He
spoke in the Words of His holy prophets which have been since the
world began, that we will be saved from our enemies and from the hand
of all that hate us. To keep the promise that He made to our father
Abraham, that He would pass on to us, that we, being delivered out of
the hand of our enemies might serve Him without fear, in holiness and
righteousness all the days of our life.
And you child, will be called the prophet of the Highest because you
will tell about Him and prepare people for His coming. You will tell
the people about salvation by the forgiveness of their sins by the
tender mercy of our God, by which the new dawn from Heaven has
visited us to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the
shadow of death, to guide us to the way of peace.
The child grew, and became strong in spirit and lived in the deserts
until the day he showed up in Israel. Can you imagine how hard it was
for those who were chosen to believe? It's still hard today. We must
just continue in faith.
