CHAPTER 3
We’re back with another exciting issue
of Daily Bread! In our last story, we were introduced to Moses, and we
learned that the Lord heard the cries of distress from His people who were
enslaved in Egypt.
Moses took care of his father-in-law
Jethro’s flock and he led the sheep to the edge of the desert up to the
mountain of God called Horeb. The angel of the Lord appeared to him there
in a flame of fire out of the middle of a bush, and when Moses looked at the
bush, it wasn’t burned.
Well, this was all very amazing to
Moses, so he started to go and get a closer look at it. When the Lord saw
Moses coming nearer to see, God called to him out of the middle of the bush
and said, Moses, Moses. Moses answered, Here I am.
The Lord said, Don’t come any closer.
Take your shoes off, because the place where you’re standing is holy
ground. I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.
The Lord said, I’ve seen the suffering
of my people in Egypt and I’ve come down to deliver (save) them from the
Egyptians and to lead them into a good and large land that is flowing with
milk and honey, which is the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites, and
the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites, and the Jebusites
(descendants of Ham and Canaan).
Then the Lord told Moses, Come now, I
will send you to Pharaoh so you can bring my people, the children of Israel
out of Egypt.
You can imagine the surprise if you
were Moses. Here you are, out walking the sheep, a normal day, just
moseying along the mountainside and then within a few minutes, you’ve seen a
burning bush that isn’t burnt, you’ve heard the voice of God, found out that
you are standing on God’s mountain which is holy ground, shoes off, and
you’ve been volunteered to be God’s right hand man in rescuing an entire
people from the bondage of the rich and powerful nation of Egypt which you
are, by the way, in hiding from because of a murder that you committed there
some time ago. Whew, quite a day.
Naturally, Moses has cold feet, no pun
intended, and says, Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should
bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?
God said, Certainly I’ll be with you,
and this will be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought
the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this very mountain. And
Moses asked God, When I go to the children of Israel and say to them, The
God of your fathers has sent me to you, they’ll ask me, What is His name?
What should I tell them?
God said I AM THAT I AM: that’s what
you’ll tell them, I AM has sent me to you. The Lord God of your fathers,
the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob has sent me to you: This is my name for
ever, and this is my memorial to all generations. Go and get the elders of
Israel together, and tell them, The Lord appeared to me and said, I have
surely visited you, and seen what you’re going through in Egypt and I’ll
bring you out of the misery of Egypt and to the Promised Land, a land
flowing with milk and honey.
And God said to Moses, They’ll listen
to your voice and you’ll go with the elders of Israel to the king of Egypt
and you’ll say to him, The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let
us go, we ask you, three days journey into the wilderness so we can
sacrifice to the Lord our God. And I’m sure that the king of Egypt won’t
let you go, and he’ll strongly protest.
God said, And I’ll stretch out my hand
and strike Egypt with all my wonders that I will do in the middle of it, and
after that, he’ll let you go. And the people of Egypt will approve of the
children of Israel leaving and when you go, you will not go empty handed,
but every woman will get from her neighbor and whoever visits her home,
jewels of silver and gold, and clothing, and you will put them on your sons
and daughters and you will spoil the Egyptians.
Oh, you bet there are interesting times ahead. The Lord isn’t finished
telling Moses the plan yet, so be sure to come back and join Daily Bread
next time to see what’s in store for Moses, the children of Israel, and
Pharaoh.
