Mercy and Grace of the Lord
Precious Mercy Bible Verses Quest

Ever notice how the Pharisees words seemed to bring forth anger and even judgment from Jesus in the Bible? Words like ... Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites.

The Pharisees were so very self righteous. They preferred to judge with criticism rather than encourage the lost. Their natural instinct seemed to be to condemn the sinner, not to help them get to Heaven. Jesus revealed that God's Mercy and Grace were unknown virtues to them.

Jesus revealed this when He said ...

Matthew 9:13

But go ye and learn what that meaneth, for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The Words Jesus are an echo from what was shared by the Lord in the Old Testament.

Hosea 6:6

For I desired Mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

The dictionary defines Mercy as ... Compassionate behavior on the part of those in power (e.g. mercy shown by a judge to a convict) Mercy is a term used to describe the leniency or unwarranted compassion for a crime or wrongdoing. Pharisees were "educated" on preaching law and rituals of sacrifice but possessed no love and compassion for others:

Matthew 23:23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, Mercy, and Faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

If they believed the person was sinning against their view of God's law, they would immediately condemn them and alienate the person from Heaven. They would use their interpretation of law to condemn the person. They even tried this with Jesus many times.

For example ...

Mark 2:23-24

23 And it came to pass, that He went through the corn fields on the Sabbath day; and His disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
24 And the Pharisees said unto Him, Behold, why do they on the Sabbath day that which is not lawful?

They quoted their interpretation of law to Jesus. But, Jesus gave them the Spiritual interpretation of the law. After all ... Jesus is the Word of God.

Mark 2:25-28

25 And He said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

27 And He said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.

Jesus revealed that their interpretation of law was wrong and that Sabbath was given as a day of rest for man and that one could do specific work on the Sabbath, if it was for good reason. This quoting of law went on and on and each time, Jesus would reveal the Spiritual truth of the law. Jesus would speak of God's Mercy and Grace and Love which are Eternal:

Luke 1:50

And His Mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to generation.

The Pharisees seemed so closed minded to their view of law that they refused to understand God's Grace and that He is not bound to their carnal interpretation of law and will have Mercy on whoever He wants, whenever He wants:

Romans 9:15-16

15 For He saith to Moses, I will have Mercy on whom I will have Mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth Mercy.

Romans 9:18

Therefore hath He Mercy on whom He will have Mercy, and whom He will he hardeneth.

These preachers of law seem to forget that they too were/are sinners:

Ephesians 2:1-3

1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

And that they were/are forgiven and received God's Mercy and Grace:

Ephesians 2:4-8

4 But God, who is rich in Mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by Grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in Heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His Grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by Grace are ye saved through Faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.
