The Mighty Men Bible Story

Always nice to have you back! Last time we met to share Daily Bread together, we had the pleasure of sharing one of David's Psalms of praises!

As you may have guessed, since we're fast approaching the end of our study of the Second Book of Samuel, David is getting old. The author(s) therefore share with us the "last words of David." These are probably not his dying words, but perhaps some of the last words he wrote that were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Don't forget David wasn't only the king of Israel, but a Prophet of God. Jesus said so Himself that things were written in the Psalms about Him, and David wrote most of the Psalms in the Bible.

Luke 24:44

And He said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me.

When a person knows that they're nearing the end of their life, they usually say or write things that are pretty important ... Things they want others to remember or learn by. In these words of David, he begins by saying that the Holy Spirit worked through him, and that he did hear God talk to him. He taught him how to be a good king.

2 Samuel 23:2-4

2 The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and His word was in my tongue.
3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.

Then David expresses that he doesn't feel like he, and/or his family were not as pure as the light of the morning without clouds and as tender grass after a rain, but that the Lord made an awesome covenant with him concerning his family and the kingdom and that's what saved him. That's what gave David inspiration and hope, and it was all he wanted, and the Lord helped him not to want any more than that ...

2 Samuel 23:5

Although my house be not so with God; yet He hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although He make it (David's desire) not to grow.

But, David also understood and wanted to tell his loved ones, and us, that there are evil ones that are impossible for men to deal with, but God will and they'll be cast out in the end ...

2 Samuel 23:6-7

6 But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:
7 But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.

Ever thought of writing some stuff down for your loved ones to read in the future? Why wait until your last days? Certainly there is a deeper wisdom in our last days, because we finally see things more spiritually and the worldly things that meant so much during our lives are put into perspective, but there are plenty of valuable lessons that are in our hearts for our loved ones even when we're young that we neglect to write down ... Because we're too busy. What a shame. Ask God for the time ... Here's a verse from a Psalm to encourage you:

Psalms 84:11

For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.

Next, the author(s) of this particular part of The Second Book of Samuel thought it proper to mention David's mighty men. As we know from our study of David's life, he had tens of thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of men who fought under him.

Not like rulers of today who call the shots from a capital building or a palace, he was out on the battlefield with the soldiers for most of his life. He taught them. He had a select group of men that were his most mighty men. You might call them David's disciples.

When you read this chapter, you can almost imagine David talking to Jehoshaphat (he was David's recorder), saying, "Make sure you write about my fellas." (That's not to say that Jehoshaphat was the author of any of the books of the Bible that include accounts of David's life, but Jehoshaphat kept records of the events for David. Sorry, didn't mean to ruin the mood getting technical, so let's get back in a more reminiscent state of mind, shall we?)

These are the names of David's mightiest men. They were classified in three (let's call them) ranks:

The first three, the most heroic, and earning the highest standing were Adino (who was the chief of these three), Eleazar and Shammah. (In 1 Chronicles 11:11, Jashobeam is named as one of David's mighty men above Eleazar, so Jashobeam and Adino may be one and the same.)

The next three who were of the next highest standing than the rest were Abishai (who was the chief of these three), Benaiah and ... Actually only two are named in this group, though it clearly says that Abishai was chief among three.

Israel Army of Bible King David Best of Best
The Mighty Men Bible Warriors

You can open your Bible to this chapter and read some of the remarkable things these fellas did ... They were pretty amazing. No wonder David referred to them as his mighty men.

Not only were they mighty, but their relationship with the king was that of close camaraderie. There's a recollection of one of the times when David was taking cover at one of his strongholds. The Philistines had a base in Bethlehem at the time, but they had troops camped in the valley of Rephaim.

And David's three mightiest men went to David. Remember, David's hometown was Bethlehem, and while he was hiding he made a remark to the effect of "Oh, if I could only have a drink from the well of Bethlehem!" Now, here's loyalty ... This wasn't an order or a command, it was a musing of David's, of the water he had loved in the past. Well, these three mighty fellas broke through the army of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem and brought it back to David.

But David couldn't drink it because those guys risked their lives to get it for him, so he poured it out as an offering to the Lord.

How many other amazing things happened throughout history that haven't been written? Well, here's what John said concerning the life of Jesus ...

John 21:25

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
