We're back again, and it's good to have you here for more Daily Bread. In this part of John's letter, he talks more about sin, and what sounds pretty scary and confusing at first, turns out to be valuable information for us in our journey of Faith to walk in the light, and fight against the darkness of sin.

Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Romans 8:16-17

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Galatians 3:26

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

1 John 5:2

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

Am I a Child of God Bible Study Of Hope
Child of God Bible Verse Meaning

John writes:

Consider the kind of love the Father has blessed us with, that we should be called the sons of God. Therefore, the world doesn't understand us, because it didn't understand Him (Jesus, the Son of God). Beloved, right now, we are the sons of God, and it isn't clear yet what we are to be, but we know that when Jesus shall appear, we shall be like Him, because we will see Him as He is. And every man who has this hope in Him, purifies himself, even as Jesus is pure.

Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Did you get that part about us becoming like Jesus when He appears? I'm going to ask you to hold on to your emotions because you ain't read nothing yet ...

Whoever commits sin, also violates the law, because sin is the violation of the law. And you understand that Jesus was born, made flesh, revealed to us, to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin at all. Whoever abides (remains) in Him, doesn't sin, and whoever sins, has not seen Him, or known Him.

Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as Jesus is righteous. He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever is born of God does not commit sin; because His child abides in Him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Child of God Bible Verse Explained

Now wait just a minute here, you may be saying to yourself. Just a couple of chapters ago, John said that if you say you have no sin, you've deceived yourself, you don't have Truth in you. You also make God a liar and His word isn't in you. Now he's saying that if you sin, you're a child of the devil. Those are some pretty extreme extremes!

John isn't trying to contradict himself and confuse us all, he's just stating the facts actually. Let's look at these things separately. It's true, that we all sin. To say that we don't, well, is to deny that you're human. Yes, even when you're reborn you sin. In fact, after you're reborn, you may think you sin more than you used to, but that's just because your new self is aware of all the sins that it wasn't conscious of before. (The devil loves making sin seem so normal.)

Now, let's look at the other side of the coin that John is showing us. He that commits sin is of the devil. Well, it certainly isn't of your own preference, that you sin. Something plants the seed that grows into sin. You don't purpose in your heart, saying, I want to sin, even though you are aware that what you're going to do is a sin. In fact, you probably hate yourself once you do it. And if you're leading a Christian life, each and every day, the devil is slapping opportunities to sin under your nose left and right. It's his job. And sometimes we transgress. We all do. We sin.

Why Am I a Child of God Bible Verse Answer

But the child of God ... that reborn part of you, isn't the culprit of that. That godly child is the one that agrees with John, and that child remains with his Father, and his Father with him. So when John says, He that commits sin is of the devil, he is saying that the source of sin is the devil. And we can all agree. You probably look back on some of your sins and shake your head in disbelief that you could ever imagine doing such things. It's shameful and ugly and embarrassing and you wish you owned a magic eraser big enough to make even the slightest hint of it disappear. Do you think you're the source of those deeds? Certainly not. Yet you did them. And that's why Jesus died for you. And it will happen again. And He will forgive you, again. Two important things to remember. God goes after the source of sin, not the repentant sinner. And secondly, don't ever find yourself using "the devil made me do it" as an excuse for your sin. Be strong when the devil entices you. You have to become more clever - more crafty, than he. Jesus said:

Matthew 10:16

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

That's fighting the good fight, and walking the walk.

Let's continue now with John's letter.

Child of God Bible Verse Blessing

This is how you can tell who are the children of God and the children of the devil: Whoever isn't righteous, is not of God, neither is he who doesn't love his brother. This is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not like Cain, who was of that wicked one, and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's were righteous.

Don't be surprised my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who doesn't love his brother remains in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. (A murderer in the sense that he kills love and his own hope of eternal life.)

By this we understand the love of God, because Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has plenty, and sees his brother in need, and doesn't have compassion on him, how can the love of God live in him?

My little children, let's not love in word (things written), or in talk, but in deed and in Truth. And by this we know that we are of the Truth, and shall encourage our hearts before Him. Because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our hearts don't condemn us, then we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

And this is His commandment, That we should believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He commanded us. And he that keeps His commandments dwells in him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit which He has given us.

Ephesians 5:1

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

Am I a Child of God Bible Study Conclusion
Child of God Bible Verse Summary

Well, we've gotten a good lesson from John about sin, but that's not all he's saying. Love is more than just words, it's in your actions. It's in your generosity, and your compassion. The qualities that Christ's love included should be the kind that characterizes us, and when it is, we will be free to experience confidence before God. Just the thought of that makes you take a deep breath and feel good inside, doesn't it? You really can't learn enough about love, and John will teach us more about the love of God in the next chapter, right here at Daily Bread.
