One day, David asked if there was anyone left in Saul's family still alive so that for Jonathan's sake he could show kindness to them.

There was one servant of Saul, name Ziba, that was summoned and David asked if there was anyone left of the family of Saul. Ziba told David that Jonathan still had a son alive, who was crippled. (Remember Mephibosheth who was mentioned briefly in Chapter 4?)

David sent for the boy and when Mephilbosheth met David, he fell on his face in reverence. David said, "Mephibosheth." He responded, "You look upon your servant." David responded, "Don't be afraid. I wanted you to come so I could show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake. I will return to you all of Saul's land and I want you to live here with me.

Mephibosheth bowed to David saying, "Who am I, that you should show such kindness to me? I'm nothing but a dead dog." The king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said, "I have given your master's grandson all that used to belong to Saul and his family.

You and your sons and servants will work the land and bring what it produces to Jerusalem for Mephibosheth. But Mephibosheth shall live here with me. Ziba, having 15 sons and 20 servants, agreed, and complied with all the king said. From that day on, Mephibosheth lived at the palace and was cared for as if he were a son of David. Mephibosheth also had a little boy named Micha.

David and Mephibosheth in the Bible Summary

So all of Ziba's family became the servants of Mephibosheth, who, crippled in both legs, continued to live in Jerusalem with the king.

David made sure to keep his promise of showing Jonathan's family kindness. Even though Jonathan had died, David, being a very loyal man, kept true to his word.
