Ruth and Naomi Bible Story Events
Naomi in the Bible Study

Glad to have you back to share more Daily Bread. To fully understand the next event that happened in the story of Ruth, we're going to have a little refresher on something the Lord commanded the people of Israel concerning widows.

Back in biblical days, it was considered a blessing, and honorable to have a large family. Remember to be be fruitful and multiply, Genesis 1:28. In fact, it was so important that if a man's brother died but had no children, out of duty, his brother would marry the deceased's widow.

The firstborn of this combination would carry the deceased brother's name so that his name would continue in Israel. If the brother chose not to be dutiful, it was a very shameful thing, Deuteronomy 25:5-10. In fact, you may remember that Judah had a son who died, and the brother refused to carry on his brother's name, and it displeased the Lord, so He killed the man, Genesis 38:8-10.

In this case, there was no brother, as you know, both of Naomi's sons died, so does the responsibility of carrying on the family name pass on to the next of kin? We'll find out soon. With that in mind, let's resume our story.

Naomi, concerned about Ruth being childless said to her, Isn't it only right that I help you find contentment, so that it may be well with you? And isn't Boaz a relative of ours, whose maidens you were with? Listen, he's preparing barley tonight in the threshing floor (where they separate the grain from the chaff).

Clean yourself up and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor, but don't let Boaz know you're there until he is done eating and drinking. Then, when he goes to sleep, notice the place where he lies down, and you shall go in and uncover his feet, and lay yourself down, and he will tell you what you should do.

Now, maybe it's just me, but am I the only one who thinks it would be more honorable to approach the man while he was sober? The law was known by everyone, and if Boaz was a godly man, he would have done the right thing, and if not, the Lord would take care of business, no? Not only that, but after all, didn't Boaz already make his integrity known? Just a little eyebrow lifting thought.

Ruth said to Naomi, All that you've instructed me, I will do. So she went down to the threshing floor and did what Naomi told her. When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn, and Ruth quietly went and uncovered his feet and laid down.

At midnight, Boaz was startled, and turned over and saw a woman lying at his feet. He said, Who are you? And she answered, I am Ruth your handmaid: spread your covers over your handmaid; because you are a near kinsman. And Boaz said, may the LORD bless you, my daughter.

Naomi in the Bible Decisions

And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast showed more kindness in the end than at the beginning, since you haven't followed young men, whether poor or rich.

And now, my daughter, don't worry, I will do for you all that you request, because all the city of my people know that you are a virtuous woman. It's true that I'm your close relative, however, there is a relative closer than I.

Wait this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform the duty of a kinsman, well, let him do the kinsman's part. But if he will not do the part of a kinsman for you, then I will do the part of a kinsman for you, as the LORD lives. Lie down until the morning.

Naomi in the Bible Blessing

Ruth lay at his feet until the morning, and she got up before anyone could recognize her. And he said, Don't let anyone know that a woman came into the threshing floor. Then he said, Bring your shawl, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and placed it in her shawl, and she went into the city.

And when she returned, Naomi said, How did things work out for you, my daughter? And Ruth told her all that the man had done for her. She said, He gave me these six measures of barley and said, Don't go empty to your mother in law.

Then Naomi said, Stay here, my daughter, until you know how this turns out, because the man will not be at peace, until he has worked this whole matter out today.
