Let us begin, shall we? Now, most believe and even know that Jesus
will return. In truth ... The day Jesus
returns is the most important topic to those who believe in
Jesus.
However, we will find out as we sojourn along in this Jesus' Return
study that there are actually a few more times when Jesus Returns, in
the future.
One of the times that Jesus returns is to gather His elect which is
an event known as the Rapture.
The other time that the Lord Jesus will return soon thereafter is
when our Lord Jesus returns at the event known as the Armageddon
which is a great war between evil people on earth and our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. When Jesus Returns at that time, it is to
defeat an enemy of His Christians who is known as the Antichrist
and for Satan
to be cast into Hell
for 1000 years. At this time the souls who are still on earth
after the end times and who chose to believe in and follow the path
of the Lord will experience the Millennium.
But ... What will happen when Jesus returns? Before we look into
that, let us look at the question of ... When will Jesus return? That
question has been asked by every Christian, even the early
Christians. Here is the response that Jesus gave when He was asked
this question:
Mark 13:32
But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the Angels
which are in Heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
Revelation 3:3
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast,
and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as
a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Revelation 16:15
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth
his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
Jesus did give us a general idea of when He would return. It is only
natural to have hope the Lord Jesus will return soon. It will be just
before the Great Tribulation begins. What will happen when our Savior
returns? Let's take a look at what prophecy tells us about Jesus'
Return and if the Lord Jesus will return soon.
How will you know it's really Jesus?
Matthew 24:23-27
23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ,
or there; believe it not.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false
prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if
it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25 Behold, I have told you before.
26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, He is in
the desert; go not forth: behold, He is in the secret chambers;
believe it not.
27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and
shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of
man be.
Luke 17:23
And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after
them, nor follow them.
How Jesus Will Return? Jesus Returns in the Clouds
So, what is the sure sign that it truly is Jesus?
Matthew 24:30
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in Heaven: and then
shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son
of man coming in the clouds of Heaven with power and great glory.
Luke 17:24
For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under
Heaven, shineth unto the other part under Heaven; so shall also the
Son of man be in His day.
Revelation 1:7
Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him and they
also which pierced Him.
Speaking of He whom they pierced ... Check out this awesome prophecy.
Pay close attention to these words ... They shall look upon me
whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him. It is
speaking about Jesus, the Word of God, speaking through the Prophet
that they would crucify Him.
Zechariah 12:10
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, the Spirit of Grace and of supplications: and they
shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall
mourn for Him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be
in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his
firstborn.
Cool huh?
At Jesus' return, the Lord Jesus will return to Gather
His elect and take them to Heaven before the Great Tribulation
begins. This is the 1st time that the Lord Jesus Returns and is what
we will call the 1st Rapture).
After the Great Tribulation Jesus will return again to gather the
Jewish believers and those Gentiles who became believers during the
Great Tribulation and take them to Heaven. (This is the 2nd Rapture.)
To find out about the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, which those who have been taken in both the first and second rapture have been invited to, see this study:
Matthew 25:31-34
31 When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all
the Holy Angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His
glory:
32 And before Him shall be gathered all nations:
and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth
his sheep from the goats:
33 And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the
goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand,
Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you
from the foundation of the world:
Matthew 24:30-31
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in
Heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they
shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of Heaven with power
and great glory.
31 And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a
trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the
four winds, from one end of Heaven to the other.
1 Thessalonians 4:16
For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the Archangel, with the Trump of God.
2 Thessalonians 2:1
Now we beseech you by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and by our
gathering together unto Him.
Revelation 14:1
And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with Him
an hundred forty and four thousand, having His Father's name written
in their foreheads.
Revelation 15:2
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that
had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over
his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass,
having the harps of God.
We see that when Jesus returns, He is here to fulfill prophecy. But,
are we sure that the Lord Jesus will return soon?
Then Jesus will return once again on The Day of the Lord for
the battle of Armageddon, as we discussed earlier.
Zechariah 14:1-9
14 Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall
be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to
battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the
women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity,
and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those
nations, as when He fought in the day of battle.
4 And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of
Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of
Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward
the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the
mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the
south.
5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for
the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall
flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of
Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the
Saints with thee.
6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light
shall not be clear, nor dark:
7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the
Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening
time it shall be light.
8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go
out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of
them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
9 And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that
day shall there be one Lord, and His name one.
John described Jesus' return from what he saw in his Revelation, and
the picture at the top of this page depicts the Glory that Jesus
receives when Jesus Returns. The words are magnificent, as they were
given to John by the Angel of the Lord, and the picture is
breathtaking, but they're only what our limited human imaginations
allow us to envision causing us hope that the Lord Jesus will return
soon.
Revelation 19:11-16
11 And I saw Heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and
He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in
righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were
many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He
Himself.
13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and
His name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in Heaven followed Him upon
white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that
with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a
rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and
wrath of Almighty God.
16 And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name
written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
The Lord will be victorious in that day of Jesus' return, as He
conquers all evil from the face of the earth with the Sword of
Truth, which is His Word.
Revelation 19:17-21
17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried
with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of
heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the
great God;
18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of
captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and
of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and
bond, both small and great.
19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and
their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on
the horse, and against his army.
20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet
that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that
had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his
image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with
brimstone.
21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of Him
that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of His mouth: and
all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
Isaiah 28:14-19
14 Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men,
that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with
death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have
made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in
Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner
stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness
to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and
the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and
your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you:
for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and
it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
God is addressing rulers of Jerusalem. They made a covenant with
death and hell, so the Lord placed a cornerstone, a tried stone, sure
foundation, and he that believeth shall not make haste. Their
covenant with death and hell will be disannulled when the overflowing
scourge shall pass thru, then shall ye be trodden down by it.
Psalms 110:1-4
1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand,
until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
2 The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion:
rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in
the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the
dew of thy youth.
4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a
priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
The Word of the Lord through the prophet Amos tells us that though we
can hope the Lord Jesus will return soon, that we shouldn't
anticipate the Day of the Lord with welcome. In other words, we
should not be excited about it because it will be horrific times
before it is finished.
Amos 5:18-20
18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what
end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.
19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him;
or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a
serpent bit him.
20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not
light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
