Law Versus Grace Today

Law And Grace Study on Law Vs Grace Blessing

It's a common belief among some that today's Christians must follow the Jewish Customs and laws within the Old Testament in its entirety in order to receive Salvation. This Law vs Grace debate has been around for thousands of years. Even the early Christians debated on this Law versus Grace topic.

But ... Is it Truth?

Let's see what the Bible says concerning this seemingly problematic law and Grace issue.

John 1:17

For the law was given by Moses, but Grace and Truth came by Jesus Christ.

First, a little law Versus Grace review of what the Old Testament (Covenant), and the New Testament (Covenant) are. A Testament, or Covenant, is a promise. When Adam and Eve sinned, they brought in the Original Sin. In order for man to be cleansed of sin, law was instituted and sacrifice and offering were needed to remove sin.

As the generations progressed and the world began to be filled with people, God chose a people to be His own, also known as the children of Israel, the Hebrews, and/or the Jewish people and God ruled these people in the form of Commandments, statutes and judgments.

The Old Testament was the written law.

Exodus 19:5

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my Covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the Earth is mine:

But, they did not keep His Covenant which was based on law. God's people found it difficult to live by the commandments, statutes and judgments of the Old Testament. So God, being ever so gracious, had to fix it. He knew that mankind couldn't restore the connection between He and they that was broken by this continual sin.

No, mankind could not repair this division. He would have to provide a Grace blessing. So, He began to prepare the way for Jesus (God in the flesh) to come and pay the price for our sin. The New Testament was then foretold by God through His prophets. God told us that He would make a New Covenant, where He would write the law in our hearts. This means that following God's law would be second nature to us because we would follow Him out of Love.

Not fear of law.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new Covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the Covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Let's take a Law versus Grace voyage back in time ... We must understand that the Old Covenant applied to the children of Israel, but before the actual law was given to Moses, as you know, even as early as Cain and Abel, and Noah, people made sacrifices and offerings to God. However, do keep in mind that offerings are sometimes just gifts, specifically given to God for love and praise of Him.

Galatians 3:23-25

23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

As we learned earlier, before Jesus arrived, the children of Israel were told of this New Covenant by the prophets. they just never understood what God's plan was.

Isaiah 42:1-7

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto Truth.
4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for His law.
5 Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
6 I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a Covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Law Vs Grace Disagreement

Sooooooo, what we have here is God, saying that He's got a plan to let the Gentiles in on the privilege of being included as His people:

Isaiah 49:1-6

1 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;
3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.
5 And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.
6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Malachi 1:11

For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.

The law versus Grace blessing was prophecy. We will now look at Words Jesus shared with the Jewish people and not the gentiles as He clearly indicates.

Matthew 10:5-6

5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Matthew 15:22-24

22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Here is another law vs Grace Scripture that confirms that the Old Testament (Law) is replaced by the New Testament (Grace). This is written by the Apostle Paul, explaining that when Jesus came into the world, He said (to God) ... You didn't want sacrifice and offerings and you didn't get any pleasure from things offered by the law, but you have prepared me to be sacrificed. Paul cites that in the book of Psalms, David prophesied the Word of the Lord, speaking the Words of Jesus:

Lo, I come (it is written of me in scripture) to do your will, O God.

Concerning the law versus Grace topic, Paul points out that God takes away the first (Old Testament - Law), so that the second (New Testament - Grace) may replace it, and by the second ... or New Testament ... Through Grace, one single and final sacrifice, we are saved by Faith.

Hebrews 10:5-10

5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Law Versus Grace Today Vs the Past
Law and Grace Blessing for You

In order for a will and Testament to become in force, the testator must die. The same applies to the New Testament. Paul explains this in His letter (addressed to the Hebrews) as well.

Hebrews 9:11-20

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 And for this cause He is the Mediator of the New Testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

Hebrews 8:6-8

6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He [Jesus} is the mediator of a better Covenant, which was established upon better promises.
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Jesus couldn't have said it clearer, than what He said in this statement:

I will have mercy, and not sacrifice.

Matthew 9:12-13

12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Law Versus Grace Today and Love
Law Vs Grace Blessing and Curse

I will have mercy (Grace) and not sacrifice (Law). In other words, the Old Testament is out, the New Testament is in. The New Testament is all about Grace. The New Testament applies to all, both Jewish and Gentile alike. Jesus also taught about the New Testament in the parable about the new wine in new bottles:

Luke 5:36-39

36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

Here is a little Law versus Grace today tidbit of truth ... What was Jesus saying? You can't have a new game with the same old rules or you'll just have ... The same old game. He was showing them, He is the Son of God, you can be healed by your Faith in Him, and Law is being replaced by Grace now with the new rules. What Jesus was saying is, God is putting a new promise into new hearts and both will last forever.

Jesus clearly stated before His death that there would be a New Promise ...

Matthew 26:28

For this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Let's take a quick law and Grace blessing field trip ... After Jesus had returned to Heaven, the Apostles received the Holy Spirit and set out to teach the Truth. God chose Paul to teach the Gentiles. Some of the Jewish Christians insisted that the law of Moses and the customs of the Jewish people be applied to the Gentiles if they were to be allowed to become Christian. There was much debate about the matter.

However ... After the Holy Spirit put His two cents in. This letter was sent to the gentiles concerning the matter of the Gentiles following the law of Moses. He clearly corrected the law versus Grace today issue:

Acts 15:23-29

23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.
24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

Here is an important Law and Grace today truth ... The Apostles learned from the Holy Spirit that the Jewish customs and some of the Jewish Laws were not to be placed upon the Gentiles (anyone who is not Jewish).

As Peter said so eloquently ...

Acts 15:10-11

10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
11 But we believe that through the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

They should not be under the Old Covenant as God had made a New Covenant and that is why it is said that the Holy Spirit had the Apostles take this message to the Gentiles.

Try this Law versus Grace today fact on for size ... In short if you are not Jewish, you are a Gentile. You are not bound to the old Jewish customs of the Old Covenant. As Christians, we are bound under the New Covenant not the Old Covenant just as our Father said that He has broken the Old Covenant. If the shoe fits Cinderella, slap that puppy on:

Zechariah 11:10-13

10 And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my Covenant which I had made with all the people.
11 And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the Lord.
12 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.

This was Law vs Grace prophecy of the coming Grace blessing. God knew that they would trade Him up and even knew how much they would trade Him up for ... 30 pieces of silver. The Old Covenant ended when Jesus died and Judas Iscariot and the Religious leaders weighed His price for 30 pieces of silver and they crucified our Lord and He died for our sins. The New Covenant then began. So many fail to see this Truth and prefer to teach law and works as the way to enter Heaven instead of God's Love and Grace by sacrificing His Son as our only way in.

Law Versus Grace Today Danger

Now, make no mistake my friend, even though God's Grace may appear to be a "get out of hell free" card of sorts. you are still responsible for your actions after you receive God's Grace.

God's Grace reveals that if you truly believe in Jesus and the Truth that He was willing to die for you, and did, that you would know that He loves you so much that you will want to do what He wants you to do because you would know that He is looking out for your best interests. You will try hard not to do things that would make him ashamed or disappointed in you. You may fall, but always remember that only a worm is free from the worry of stumble and the real test is to see if you will get up, dust yourself off, carry on and never surrender.

I will give you with a few more law vs Grace today Scriptures that will help you to see the Truth.

Romans 6:14-15

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under Grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under Grace? God forbid.

Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by Grace are ye saved through Faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Galatians 5:4

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from Grace.

In short, the truth of the law versus Grace today debate is that there is a New Covenant and it is based on Grace and not law. It is not our works that will get us into Heaven but His Love and His Grace blessing that will cause the laws to be placed into our minds and hearts causing us to do His will.

John 1:17

For the law was given by Moses, but Grace and Truth came by Jesus Christ.

Ponder on this ... Mankind seems to like to see things in black or white terms when it comes to law versus Grace today and maybe even a touch of gray when it suits them. However, God created the rainbow and is not limited to man's carnal minded limitations on law vs Grace. The Grace blessing is yours. Have you tried Grace on for size yet?
