What Was Adam and Eve Original Sin

Are you a Christian, and as much as you try, you find yourself sinning yet again? Did you know that this is because of what is known as the original sin? This original sin is the sinful nature that every human has inherited because of the original sinful choice that Adam and Eve made thousands of years ago in the Garden of Eden when tempted by Satan.

Due to this choice made by the first man and woman ... The sin is now in the flesh of all mankind and when we are born, we are destined to death ...

Romans 5:12

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

... Unless we make the choice to believe in Jesus. When we become Christians, we are reborn and receive Salvation and Eternal Life. This New Covenant created on the foundation of Love and Grace. The destiny of death made void by the absolutely precious and powerful Blood of Jesus.

1 Corinthians 15:22

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Let's take a look at the story of how this original sin came about.

Genesis 2:15-25

15 And the Lord God took the man [Adam], and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Adam and Eve Original Sin Reaction

Think about that for a second. Once you know the difference between good and evil, you become aware and therefore responsible for the evil that you choose to do. Obviously this is because then you know better and choose to sin anyway.

But if you don't know the difference between good and bad, is it sin? For example, if a toddler took a piece of candy off a stand in the checkout aisle of the grocery store while their mother unloaded the groceries onto the counter, it is not stealing, because a toddler doesn't know better.

In the Adam and Eve original sin story ... This tree in the Garden of Eden gives one the knowledge of what is good and what is evil. In other words, at that time, Adam and Eve didn't know what evil was, but if they ate from the tree, they would then have a conscience, knowing right from wrong.

Some people believe that it was an apple that Adam and Eve ate. But, the truth is that it does not say it was an apple. Some others believe that the forbidden fruit is an euphemism for sex, but the truth is, that it doesn't say that either. It says that it was the Tree of Knowledge between Good and Evil and the fruit from said tree would do just that ... Make them aware of sin.

James 4:17

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Back to the Garden of Eden ...

Genesis 3:1-4

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Well guess what? The Devil lied because we all know Adam and Eve did die. God knew that if they ate from the Tree of Life, they would live forever so He evicted them from the Garden of Eden so they could not.

Genesis 3:22-24

22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the Tree of Life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the Tree of Life.

When Paul wrote of the Adam and Eve original sin story, that because of their choice, we were all subject to death until Grace:

1 Corinthians 15:22

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Think about it ... Adam and Eve were allowed to eat from any tree in the Garden except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. This includes the Tree of Life. Jesus is the Spiritual Tree of Life. If you choose to believe in Him. You get the opportunity to have the Eternal Life we were supposed to have from the beginning before Adam and Eve chose to disobey God. Get to know the Holy Spirit to understand more.

Genesis 3:5-19

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And He said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16 Unto the woman He said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam He said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

How Does Adam and Eve Original Sin Affect Us

We're gonna go behind the scenes now for a few moments and do a little background check on the serpent that appears in our original sin Bible origins exploration.

Who is this serpent? Most people would say it is the devil. As if there is only one. That is simply not true. There is more than one devil.

Luke 8:30

And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

James 2:19

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

There is one called Satan, who is the prince or leader of all devils, and his name is Lucifer.

Isaiah 14:12-16

12 How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

Adam and Eve Original Sin Choice Encages Us Today

Satan is not omniscient, in other words, he cannot be in more than one place at a time and he cannot read your mind. What we commonly refer to as "the devil" are really a multitude of fallen (traitor) angels that turned away from God to pursue evil. So this "devil" that entered the garden in the form of a snake ... May or may not have been Satan, himself.

It is believed that it is Satan because of this scripture which was speaking of Satan.

Ezekiel 28:13-19

13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

Back to the Adam and Eve original sin story ...

Not only did Adam and Eve disobey God, but the serpent con-vinced them to be covetous of God's power to know good and evil. Now, because of their choice to believe him, all of mankind's eyes are opened to know good and evil, instead of the way it was before Adam and Eve made the choice.

If Adam and Eve hadn't committed the original sin, the devils that we talked about a moment ago, and even Satan himself would have no influence on us, but because of the original sin, they know the original sin is within us and they seek to tempt us in an attempt to have us turn away from God, therefore surrendering the Grace that has been offered to those that choose Jesus.

If you find the original sin Bible results frustrating to your spirit, I want to tell you, that you are not alone. You're in the same company as folks like the Apostle Paul, who explains the effects of original sin that some of us flippantly refer to as "human nature." Get ready for truth from Paul, and it will help you to better understand the frustration of original sin that is within each of us.

Romans 7:15-25

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Even Christian heroes like Paul found sin a difficult thing to conquer, because in fact, we could never conquer it, but Jesus did for us. That doesn't excuse our sins, but rather, allows us the Grace of God, when we repent and ask for His forgiveness because we believe that Jesus died to save us from sin and death.

This original sin Bible verses study took an in depth look into the Adam and Eve original sin story and we learned this ... You can not choose the things that you inherit in your flesh whether it be from your bloodline or Adam and Eve. Original sin is ours, whether we like it or not.
