What did Jesus mean when He said, The Kingdom is at hand? How can the Kingdom of Heaven have been at hand then?

Mark 1:14-15

14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God,
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the Gospel.

It's always important to know who Jesus was talking to or talking about when you're considering the words of scripture. In this passage, Jesus was talking to the Jewish people in Galilee, and when He said, The time is fulfilled, He was talking about the time of the Jews. The old covenant, or Old Testament, had ended, or been completed. The Jewish people were given a certain amount of time and then their Messiah (Jesus) came.

There is a time period mentioned numerous times in the Bible known as the "Time of the Gentiles" ... It is the period of time which is after Jesus' death but before the End Times which is a time where Gentiles (Individuals from any nation other than Israel) have been given the opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior ... It is believed that the "Time of the Gentiles" would be the same amount of time as the Jewish time period.

You can learn more about it in this study.

What is the Kingdom of Heaven in the Bible Purpose

The words, at hand means near in time. Well, nobody knows when their own lifetime expires, or when exactly the end of time as we know it will arrive, so we should all live as though the Kingdom is very near, because in fact, the time we have on earth to live a lifestyle that will bring us into His Kingdom is indeed short. Remember, a lifetime is just an instant, compared to eternity. Jesus' perspective is eternity, ours is just a mere few years.

To look at this from another point of view, at hand also means is here! If you scroll back up to the very first scripture in this study of the Kingdom, Jesus said;

"The Kingdom of God is within you."

Sooooooooo it appears that the Kingdom is a Spiritual realm that can be within you.

You live in the realm of Heaven when you walk in the footsteps of Jesus. It's a spiritual realm that we inherit as believers, and as you know, an inheritance is received at the death of the testator. The testator of the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven is Christ, and His death released the Kingdom for us to abide in.

Matthew 3:1-2

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, And saying, Repent ye: for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

Matthew 4:17

From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

Matthew 10:7

And as ye go, preach, saying, The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

Preaching about the Kingdom ... This is what was shared ...

Luke 4:43

And He said unto them, I must preach the Kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

Luke 8:1

And it came to pass afterward, that He went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the Kingdom of God: and the twelve were with Him,

Luke 9:2

And He sent them to preach the Kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

Luke 9:11

And the people, when they knew it, followed Him: and He received them, and spake unto them of the Kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

Luke 16:16

The law and the prophets were [in effect] until John [the Baptist]: since that time the Kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into [contends with] [is affected by] it.

(Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees in the last scripture.)

We are the disciples of this generation. Although Jesus spoke against the hypocrites who preached on the streets for pride and attention, that doesn't mean we shouldn't preach the Kingdom at all. There are many discreet and glorifying ways to preach our Father's Kingdom. Seek and ye shall find!

To whom does the Kingdom belong?

Matthew 5:3

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Luke 6:20

And He lifted up his eyes on His disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the Kingdom of God.

Matthew 5:10

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

You must be as a child to attain the Kingdom.

Matthew 18:1-4

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto Him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 19:14

But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.

There's a big difference between being childish and being as a child. Being childish is being ignorant, or without truth, however, being as a child is being innocent and readily accepting of the truth with an open heart.

Who may, and who may not enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

Matthew 5:20

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 7:21

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in Heaven.

Matthew 21:31

Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto Him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the Kingdom of God before you.

Matthew 21:43

Therefore say I unto you, The Kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

Matthew 23:13

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Mark 12:32-34

32 And the scribe said unto Him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but He:
33 And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, He said unto him, Thou art not far from the Kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask Him any question.

Luke 9:60,62

60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the Kingdom of God.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.

Luke 13:28-29

28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the Kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the Kingdom of God.

Who gets a better seat in the Kingdom?

Luke 14:8-15

8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him;
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

12 Then said He also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with Him heard these things, He said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the Kingdom of God.

Mark 9:35

And He sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

What is the Kingdom of Heaven in the Bible Message

Don't miss the message in this. When you obtain the Kingdom, be humble, because it's better to be asked to come and sit up front, than to assume you've attained a better seat than you have, and be escorted to the back.

Also, don't seek to do things for those who would be compelled to "repay" you. If you are repaid for something, what you've given, means nothing.

Mark 10:29-30

29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the Gospel's,
30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

The Kingdom of Heaven Bible verses study advice ... If you have given up worldly things for the Lord, you will gain much more in our Father's Kingdom. You may ask, If there is a world to come, how can the Kingdom already be here? Again, remember that the Kingdom is a realm.

There will also be a new Heaven and a new earth, but that doesn't mean that Heaven and earth don't exist now. In the same way, if you are a Christian, you have everlasting life, but it isn't the same as the life you have now, though you have both. You will have to experience death, before you attain your new eternal life (though you don't just lie dormant and lifeless after your flesh expires). You can read more about this in Abraham's Bosom. Now let's get back to who's who in the Kingdom.

Matthew 5:17-19

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till Heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 11:11-12

11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

Can the rich enter into the Kingdom?

Mark 10:17-25

17 And when He was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to Him, and asked Him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God.
19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

20 And he answered and said unto Him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in Heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto His disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the Kingdom of God!
24 And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the
Kingdom of God.

Certainly there are wealthy people who may obtain the Kingdom. But Jesus warns that you shouldn't trust in riches, because many rich people find it hard not to put their wealth above their devotion to God.

What are the mysteries (hidden truths) of the Kingdom?

Why did Jesus speak in parables? The Kingdom of Heaven Bible verses parables that Jesus taught were analogies, or situations that we can relate to our own lives. God spoke through Isaiah, saying that people would see and hear His messages, but not understand unless they opened their hearts. Jesus spoke the same message. Sometimes you can read something and not understand it, and when you least expect it, the meaning suddenly becomes clear to you. If there are parables that you don't understand, don't lose heart.

It's very important that you never give up on trying to understand what is the Kingdom of Heaven in the Bible. Sometimes we must learn certain things before others are made clear, so if you're sincere in your Faith, it may be that there are other things that the Lord is working on in you, in your individual walk of Faith, that need to be understood first.

Everybody is unique and the order in which people learn things is different for everyone. And one more thing ... Nobody has ever read the Bible and understood it all, first time through. Perhaps that's why the mysteries of the Kingdom are called just that ... mysteries. They are hidden truths. One must seek the depths of them to figure them out!

Perhaps determination is a prerequisite of the Kingdom. Unbelievers will not care to discover the mysteries of the Kingdom. But to the believer, they are a gift. Understanding the mysteries and applying them to your life, is like your admittance to the Kingdom Heaven.

Isaiah 6:8-10

8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
9 And He said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

Matthew 13:11

He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it is not given.

Mark 4:11

And He said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God: but unto them that are without [without faith], all these things are done in parables:

Luke 8:10

And He said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Matthew 13:24-30

24 Another parable put He forth unto them, saying, The Kingdom of Heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

What is the Kingdom of Heaven Parables

The good seed are Christians. We're all here together, the good and the bad, but when judgment day arrives, the bad will burn and the good will be gathered together.

Mark 4:30-32

30 And He said, Whereunto shall we liken the Kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.

Mark 4:26-29

26 And He said, So is the Kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.

The seed is your faith!

Matthew 13:52

Then said He unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

Matthew 13:44

Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

The Kingdom is like treasure.
